About this blog
Mike Argento, a York native and graduate of York Suburban Area High School and Penn State, first came to the York Daily Record in 1983. He even had gray hair back then. After stints covering everything from cops to city hall to state government to the environment, he began writing a column for the paper, three times a week, in 1989. His column can be about anything and so is his blog, which encompasses life in York County and beyond. And, for the record, as he told his wife the other night, he wishes people would stop asking him, 'What's wrong with you?' He really doesn't know.

Heck of a job!
This is a great country. It has to be. It rewards incompetence and stupidity like none other. Take, for instance, Michael Brown. Remember him? The “heck-of-a-job-Brownie” guy whose training in running horse shows prepared him so well to respond to … Continue reading

Where was Todd?
We all missed seeing our own Todd Platts at the State of the Union Address. He has an excuse. He was traveling abroad. This, of course, provides me with the opportunity to re-run “Where’s Todd? (It’s a .pdf file.) Toddplatts.pdf

PETA, gotta love ‘em.
This has been big news for the past couple of days. The Associated Press reports: “PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – An animal rights group wants organizers of Pennsylvania’s Groundhog Day festival to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robotic stand-in. “People for the … Continue reading

J.D. Salinger, Howard Zinn
Word comes that these two giants have passed. Salinger, best known as a literary recluse, was 91. Zinn, a historian who rejected the notion that history is written by the victors, was 87. Salinger’s contributions to literature are beyond measure. … Continue reading

An excellent analysis of one of the worst Supreme Court decisions, ever
The Court, a legal blog affiliated with York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in Canada, has one of the most clear-eyed analyses I’ve seen of last week’s terrible Supreme Court ruling that threw out decades of precedent to give corporations … Continue reading

Here is the lead of a story from our neighbor to the south: “A Maryland woman who was bitten by an exotic cobra over the weekend may owe her life to the quick action of snake specialists at the Philadelphia … Continue reading

It’s not what you think…
What’s the biggest problem facing business today? What’s preventing businesses from flourishing? What’s harming the economy and keeping the middle class down? If you answered taxes, you’d be wrong. According to a new book, “Money for Nothing: How the Failure … Continue reading

Well, that’s the good news…
Remember the big chunk of ice that crashed through the roof of Perry and Mary All Foster’s York Township home in the fall of 2008? Turns out it was something called atmospheric ice. It was a megacryometeor, an ice ball … Continue reading

Sounds like a heck of a party
This story from the York County Courthouse is pretty good. Daniel Cohen Johnson, 24, was thrown out of a party for being wasted and playing guitar naked. He returned and threatened some people, but was subdued when party-goers beat him … Continue reading

Victor S. Cianca: RIP
Those of us a certain age knew Victor. He was a Pittsburgh cop with a flair for directing traffic. He was a favorite of TV shows and the old “Candid Camera.” Here’s a video of him directing traffic. And here’s … Continue reading
