You know the best: The outpouring of assistance for the people of Haiti. They need all the help they can get. They needed all the help they could get even before this disaster. Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the world. Its people have suffered untold indignities over the years. And now this.
Please do what you can to help. And be careful. Only donate to reputable aid agencies, agencies that have the expertise to make sure help gets to people who need it. Many of you have done that and it's testament to our compassion for humanity.
And then, there's Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson.
There's no need to repeat Limbaugh's idiocy. He has revealed his character. He will stoop to anything to exploit the bigotry of his listeners. And he has revealed himself as a bigot. Some men live by the Ten Commandments or the Golden Rule. Limbaugh lives by the Seven Deadly Sins. He is subhuman.
And Robertson. Attributing the tragedy to a old legend that has no bearing in truth -- that the slaves in Haiti made a pact with Satan to free themselves from their oppressors -- is ridiculous on its face. That a man of God would take this moment to exploit fears and stupidity and somehow blame the victims of this disaster is simply breathtaking. But it should not be surprising. He expressed similar opinions when New Orleans drown.
As others have pointed out, there is plenty of comforting Scripture, words that can give people in a hopeless situation hope. Instead, he chose to blame the victims.
That doesn't sound like the work of a man of God.
