About this blog
Mike Argento, a York native and graduate of York Suburban Area High School and Penn State, first came to the York Daily Record in 1983. He even had gray hair back then. After stints covering everything from cops to city hall to state government to the environment, he began writing a column for the paper, three times a week, in 1989. His column can be about anything and so is his blog, which encompasses life in York County and beyond. And, for the record, as he told his wife the other night, he wishes people would stop asking him, 'What's wrong with you?' He really doesn't know.

Penn State-The Eagles: Same thing.
Weird being a Penn State and an Eagles fan this weekend. Both teams played, essentially, the same game. Penn State hung around, despite making mistakes and playing poorly at times, only to have the game slip away in the second … Continue reading

Leslie Nielsen: Like you’ve never seen him
Everybody’s playing clips from “Airplane” or “Police Squad” or “Naked Gun.” But here’s Leslie Nielsen in a kung fu movie. Nielsen passed away this weekend. An American icon.

William Burroughs wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving
As is my custom, here is William Burroughs’ Thanksgiving prayer. It’s pretty rough, but that’s Burroughs for you. (It always amuses me when people confuse William Burroughs with the guy who wrote Tarzan. He didn’t. Had he, it would have … Continue reading

Our vanishing middle class
The Washington Post has a great story about one family’s slide into poverty. Couple that with recent news about income inequality in this country — we rank worse than Argentina in this regard — and the fact that our political … Continue reading

Sanity in Tennessee, of all places.
A judge rules against the people who are trying to block the construction of a mosque near Mufreesboro, Tenn. Opponents cited the ridiculous notion that the mosque was part of a conspiracy to convert America to Sharia law and that … Continue reading

In praise of books
Rock icon Patti Smith won a National Book Award for her memoir “Just Kids.” From her acceptance speech: “I dreamed of having a book of my own, of writing one that I could put on a shelf. Please, no matter … Continue reading

Republicans and the economy
You’ve probably heard a lot of hue and cry from the right about the Federal Reserve. Well, Nobel-prize-winning economist Paul Krugman gets to the bottom of it: “So what’s really motivating the G.O.P. attack on the Fed? Mr. Bernanke and … Continue reading

Nick Kristof nails it
Kristof is a terrific columnist, often traveling to the worst places on the face of the earth to report on bad things happening to poor people. Today, he wrote about income inequality. We’re worse than Argentina. At a time when … Continue reading

The bailout is working
Interesting piece from the New York Times this morning. General Motors is selling stock and the U.S. Treasury will make billions of dollars on the sale, paying back some of the $50 billion the government invested in GM to save … Continue reading

Happy Holidays from D.C.
Two things from Congress yesterday. First, conservatives blocked passage of the Equal Wage Act, a law that would end the disparity in wages between men and women who perform the same work. Then, Senate Republicans blocked passage of an extension … Continue reading
