John Andell and Justin Scott

Here's a news release I just received from Mark Jovich. Congrats to all of the CPMA fighters, and to everyone who competed in Fall Brawl.

The Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy has a weekend of strong performances and little mistakes at Empire State Warrior Challenge “Fall Brawl” going 3 for 6 in MMA Fights.

The Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy competed in a MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event on Saturday, September 8th. The event was the Empire State Warrior Challenge “Fall Brawl” held in East Durham, NY.

The evening started with CPMA fighter John Andell of Red Lion, PA winning his debut bout with a rear naked choke in the second round over Josh Click. Andell then took a second demonstration fight later in the evening with Jeremy Springer. The CPMA fighter submitted Springer in the second round with an arm bar from the mounted position.

The second CPMA fighter to enter the ring was Brent Kroh of Dallastown, PA. Brent lost a split decision to Carlos Morales. Brent controlled the majority of the 1st round taking Morales takedown then mounting him. Brent then applied arm triangle choke. Morales fought off the arm triangle choke to end the round. The second round was a combination of takedowns by Kroh and sweeps by Morales. The 3rd and final round was exciting with both fighters trying to impose their will, Kroh attempting takedowns and Morales avoiding and striking with hands and feet.

The next fight matched the much anticipated bout between undefeated Justin Scott of Dallastown, PA against Don Gimino of Pelican JuJitsu. The talented Scott wasted no time landing a vicious round house kick to the chest of Gimino. Scott followed up with 2 hooks and an uppercut, ending the bout in 26 seconds of the 1st round.

The fourth fighter of the night for CPMA was Matthew Freeborn of New Cumberland, PA making his MMA debut against Ronald McEvilly of Tigon Martial Arts. Freeborn quickly took McEvilly to the ground, passed the guard position, moving to side control then a full mounted position. Freeborn then applied an arm triangle choke but could not submit the strong Tigon fighter. The second round was a combination of takedowns by Freeborn and guillotine chokes by McVeilly. The 3rd round was filled with many failed takedown attempts by CPMA fighter. McEvilly successfully sprawled each takedown attempt by the talented CPMA grappler. Then, with 5 seconds left in the bout, Freeborn received a kick to the head followed up with right hand causing Freeborn to receive an 8 count. Freeborn lost by decision in this extremely competitive and close fight to Mr. McEvilly.

The main event pitted Matthew Maculuso of Red Lion, PA against Joseph Funaro from Vamos JuJitsu. The strong and athletic Maculuso quickly took the Vamos Jujitsu fight to the ground with a leg trip, and then assumed side control. Funaro took quick advantage of a loose arm by the Maculuso, turning over into an inverted arm bar, submitting the CPMA fighter 28 seconds into the first round.

“All our fighters preformed extremely well. The difference between 6-0 and 3-3 are little mistakes like not finishing submission holds, ring awareness, and conditioning. We had too many little mistakes that should not have happened. The event was an outstanding opportunity for our fighters. Having the opportunity to compete with the other talented competitors was an honor. Congratulations to all the fighters from the various schools that competed in this event”

Mark P. Jovich, Head Instructor, CPMA
