George McGinnis, head instructor at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion, conducted an MMA seminar at Elicker Kenpo Karate Academy in the West Manchetser Mall this past Saturday.
George did a great job at showing techniques from many of the components of the MMA game, including throws, submissions, kicks and elbows. He kept the mood light, sprinkling in some humor, but remained professional in imparting information about judo, muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Donna Elicker, the academy's owner, has established a great studio in the mall - it's even equipped with a child-care area. Donna said George's seminar would hopefully be the beginning of a partnership of sorts between the two schools.
There's defnitely a lot that can be learned from studying a relatively new hybrid sport like MMA, while respecting a more traditional style like Kenpo. Lyoto Machida - who grew up in a Shotokan karate household, but has also studied sumo and is a BJJ black belt - has shown that quite clearly.
