Is Pittsburgh is the birthplace of modern MMA?

Godfather MMA says so. This is an interesting mini-doc about some matches that took place in Pittsburgh in the late 1970s. Some of it looks like a tough-man competition, but there are some amateur wrestling moves, some karate and a few Muay Thai knees thrown in too.

from the Web site:
"The idea of finding America's ultimate style of fighter was created by two ambitious martial artists (Bill Viola & Frank Caliguri) in the 1970's.

They set out to answer the age old burning question, "Who would win between Muhammad Ali, Bruce Lee, or Bruno Sammartino?" Their answer lead them to create the first organized league of MMA competitions in American history.

The contests pitted grapplers, kick boxers, wrestlers, boxers, martial artists, street fighters, and all around "Tough Guys" against each other.

The fighters could win by knockout, submission, or a judge's decision. More than thirty years later the "Anything Goes" brainchild of Viola and Caliguri has become the fastest growing sport in the world!"
