Jim "Kid Havoc" Hettes kicks Steven Baker. Thanks to MMAMelee, the ultimate MMA social networking site, for the pic and story.
ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS:
In front of more than 5,000 fans, Jim Hettes becomes the first man in history to win a Professional mixed martial arts bout in the state of Maryland. (See Video) Saturday night Shogun Fights was not only a staple of excitement for the city of Baltimore, but also every MMA fans dream.
Shogun is a brand new promotion and they didn't put on a fight, they put on a show! Top level promotions like the UFC and Strikeforce should beware. If this is their first time doing it, there is definitely a new contender in the house. Full with celebrities, lights, cameras and plenty of action, the crowd was electric and never was that more evident then when Hettes's walk-out song 'Welcome to Jamrock' by Damian Marley started bumping, it sent chills down your spine.
Jim only got the crowd more hyped showing up to the ring with his all-star cast of cornermen in Donald "The Cowboy" Cerrone, Kris "The Savage" McCray and Carey Vanier, which is sure to leave any opponent's corner shaking in their boots.
Hettes opponent Steven Baker fighting out of Wilmington, DE said after the fight 'Holy Sh*t, I look over and you have Cowboy in your corner!' He said it "Only added more fuel to my fire."
The match started and right away you can see Albuquerque Kickboxing's Coach Ray Yee's wisdom paying off as Jim starts the night off with a powerful high kick that to Steven Bakers credit was blocked. After a quick exchange of punches Hettes was able to get the takedown. Baker had Hettes in his guard and threw up a submission attempt, trying for an arm bar, Hettes just picked him up off the canvas and slammed him back down, immediatly dropping to a leg lock. Steven Baker tried to counter but in transition Hettes ended up on top and eventually in the mount. After raining down a couple punches, Baker tried to escape this position and Hettes pulled off a crafty arm bar 1:45 seconds into the first round.
It was a great night of fights overall, noone received any serious injuries and Shogun is planning on having another event there on March 27th. I hope more states decide to make MMA legal so guys like Jim can have a place to earn a living, but in order for that to happen the deep seeded corruption of boxing commissions around the world needs to just simple go away. Congratulations Hettes, Jim is scheduled to fight again November 27th in Scranton, PA which you can see live, right here at www.MMAMELEE.com. We have a copy of Jim's video and look for it to be available later today.
