New Jersey releases 2011 combat sports report

In calendar year 2011, the State Athletic Control Board regulated 26 professional boxing contests which consisted of 189 matches.
Professional boxing events held included the WBC world middleweight championship and the Showtime Super Six tournament finals, both from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The agency oversaw 34 mixed martial arts events which consisted of 199 professional matches and 151 amateur matches. The events included the UFC at the Prudential Center in Newark, the Strikeforce Grand Prix tournament at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, and Bellator’s season tournament finals from Caesars Atlantic City.

The agency regulated 7 muay thai kickboxing events which featured 8 professional contests, 3 class A amateur contests, and 69 class B amateur contests. The agency regulated the first full pro rules professional muay thai event in State history held at Collins Arena in Lincroft as well as the first muay thai event ever held in Atlantic City, at Bally’s Casino Hotel. These events included matches which involved WBC international titles.

Besides major events in the typical locations of Atlantic City and Newark, combat sports cards were also found in 2011 in various venues in places like Cherry Hill, Jersey City, Lakewood, North Bergen, Paterson, Rahway, Wayne and Wildwood.
