Bellator ready to roll out Season 6 with five tournaments, three title defenses, and Alvarez-Aoki II, maybe

Bellator Fighting Championships is ramping up for its sixth season, which kicks off next month. Since its inception, Bellator has marketed itself as a different animal than the UFC — staging seasons, with events each week; contenders earning the right to fight for a title after a grueling 8-man tournament; and holding shows at viable locations that just aren’t visited by other organizations. It’s a refreshing concept.

In an email earlier this week, Anthony Mazzuca, Bellator’s Public Relations Manager, gave me a peek into what this season holds:

“Our new season will begin on March 9th from Hammond, Indiana. The sixth season will feature tournaments in the bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions. Pat Curran will take on Joe Warren for the Featherweight Title, Douglas Lima will fight Ben Askren for the welterweight title, Eric Prindle will rematch with Thiago Santos to decide the winner of last seasons heavyweight tournament, and the much rumored Eddie Alvarez-Aoki fight may happen later this season.”

Here’s the events scheduled so far on Bellator’s wikipedia:

60 Bellator LX March 9, 2012 Horseshoe Casino, Hammond, Indiana
61 Bellator LXI March 16, 2012 Horseshoe Riverdome, Bossier City, Louisiana
62 Bellator LXII March 23, 2012 Laredo Energy Arena, Laredo, Texas
63 Bellator LXIII March 30, 2012 Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Connecticut
