Binky Jones - Forever Young

| | Comments (0)

Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep fightwear made this video about James "Binky" Jones in honor of Binky's recent birthday. An instructor at Baltimore's Ground Control MMA academy, Binky has fought in numerous organizations all over the world. Also known as "The Baltimore Submission Machine," Binky's strongest suit is his ground game. Most recently, he headlined the inaugural Shogun Fights at Baltimore's First Mariner Arena, winning by unanimous decision. Promoted by Ground Control owner John Rallo, the event was Maryland's first since the sport was legalized.

Jerod Phillips, who owns Tap or Sleep fightwear and sponsors James "Binky" Jones, sent me this message about Binky's fight at 145 last weekend against Jason McLean, headlining Maryland's first-ever sanctioned MMA event, Shogun Fights:
"Binky won a UD. He used Put On as his walk out song. So Binky Jones Put On for his city!!!

by the Baltimore Sun:
Flying knees, heavy punches and elaborate limb twisting have made mixed martial arts one of the nation's fastest-growing sports attractions, but Maryland has steered clear of the spectacle - until now.

The state's first sanctioned mixed martial arts card, made up mostly of local fighters, is scheduled for Oct. 24 at 1st Mariner Arena, according to Patrick Pannella, executive director of the Maryland State Athletic Commission. The event will be the culmination of a long battle by local trainers and fans to gain acceptance.

The sport's sometimes bloody bouts have raised controversy because of their violent nature. But the spectacular knockouts and exotic fighting techniques have also led to explosive popularity. Ultimate Fighting Championship, the popular face of the sport, has drawn sellouts at arenas across the country, and more than 1.7 million households paid $55 a pop to view its July 11 show.

Tap or Sleep fighters results

I spoke with Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep fightwear last night. Things didn't go so well for TOS-sponsored fighters, he said.

Baltimore's James "Binky" Jones was knocked out in the second round in his fight against Frank "The Crank" Camacho at Ultimate Warrior Challenge.

Josh "Taz" Ferguson, representing Team Cruz in Kentucky, and sponsored by local MMA clothing companies Tattoo Fightwear and Tap or Sleep, succumbed to a Mike Easton guillotine in the first round at the UWC bantamweight championship fight.

And it looks like TOS-sponsored fighter Mitchell Harris lost to Ben Askren in Missouri Saturday night:

York County-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep - which has spread to Tap or Sleep Midwest - has several fighters doing their thing tonight.

First, there's TOS fighter Mitch "The Iron Lion" Harris taking on former Olympic wrestler Ben Askren at Headhunter Productions: Patriot Act II tonight at the Holiday Inn Expo Center in Columbia, Missourt. To see the fight live and free, tune in to purefight.org.

James "Binky" Jones

I received a message last week from James "Binky" Jones, a.k.a, The Baltimore Submission Machine, who said he's training hard for his next fight, April 25 at the GMU Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. The lightweight fight is part of a card put on by Ultimate Warrior Challenge, called "Capital Punishment."

UWC is one of the most dominant MMA promotions on the East Coast, consistently producing quality events, from top to bottom. They seem to have a knack for attracting tough veterans and hungry up-and-comers, and they sign fighters from big camps like those run by Greg Jackson, Lloyd Irvin and Renzo Gracie.

Jones, who has fought for EliteXC and BodogFight, trains at Ground Control, an excellent facility in Baltimore. Jones' last fight was for UWC, ended with a unanimous decision loss to Kyle Baker at UWC - Confrontation in October 2008.

Jones is sponsored by York County MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep Fightwear.

I've met Binky and the man is gracious, humble and giving. He trained with Biff Walizer on several occasions, wanting to help the Windsor Township fighter start his career off right.

Jones is facing Frank "The Crank" Camacho, who fights out of Lloyd Irvin's gym. Camacho is 5'9", and has a 3-2 record. Jones is 5'8", has a 7-7 record, and trains out of John Rallo's Ground Control academy.

I think we might see one hell of a ground war here. I mean, we've got the Baltimore Submission Machine versus The Crank, not to mention the schools they come from, although they are full-service MMA schools, both Irvin and Rallo have their roots in jiu-jitsu.

It's Tap or Sleep time!

... and Biff's opponent tapped, said Jerod of Tap or Sleep fightwear. He just called me and said Biff won in 1:08 of the first round. The fight went to the ground, Biff nearly got caught in an arm-bar, but was able to sink in a guillotine choke from the bottom and his opponent was left with no alternative but to tap.

"We just came back and did a little redemption fight," Jerod said. From now until the spring, Biff will concentrate on coaching Red Lion's wrestling team, he said.

Jerod said he saw James "Binky" Jones there, who was scheduled to fight, but had to bow out to injury. Binky, a great competitor, has trained with Biff before and works out at Ground Control in Baltimore.

Biff Walizer to fight Sat. in DC

York County's own Biff Walizer, of LionHeart Fighters, will be fighting at the first-ever Battle at the Nation's Capital at the DC Armory. Biff told me he took the fight at the last-minute as a fill-in. The fight's at the curious weight of 148 Biff said. Curious because it's sandwiched in between the staple fighting weights of 145 and 155. Biff had a couple days to shed some pounds, but he did it. Fights start at 8 p.m. tomorrow, but I'm not sure where he is in the line-up. I'll keep you guys posted on how he does. Hopefully, he gets another arm for his collection, like Steve Cantwell.

Jones-Baker for possible FOTN

Baker

Binky Jones lost by unanimous decision to Kyle "Alley Cat" Baker at tonight's Ultimate Warrior Challenge at George Mason University.

Baker displayed excellent muay Thai skills - elbows and knees from the clinch and low kicks - not to mention a wicked right body shot. He also was able to avoid Jones' superior ground game.

Although bloodied, Jones soldiered on, pressing the action.

One of the hosts got in the cage afterward to interview Baker and said, "You guys beat the snot out of each other." And asked the crowd if the performance was a possible Fight of the Night, to which they cheered.

Rest assured, Binky will be back. He's got an awesome training facility at Ground Control and a host of great training partners, not to mention owner John Rallo as his coach.
