Former WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley and Shane Carwin talk recently - I'm thinking it was at the UFC 100 expo? Anyway, maybe it's the camera angle, but Lashley looks to be a bit bigger than Carwin ... Not that it really matters. If Lashley can string together a few more wins - convincing wins over increasingly stiffer competition - we might see him in the UFC. Lashley's last win was against Bob Sapp, nothing that would really impress Dana White and Co. He said recently his sights are set on HW champ Brock Lesnar, but if Brock's still the champ by that time, he'll have to go through guys like Carwin, who have helped to make the UFC's heavyweight division one of the better ones as of late.

Although he still has not been tested, I'm thinking Affliction or Strikeforce is going to sign Lashley, for possibly an event in the fall. Just a guess. And how about all those boos for Lashley? Either the fans in Biloxi simply don't like Lashley, were upset at Sapp for tapping, or aren't too familiar with the ground game.
from sherdog.com:
Bobby Lashley fought with brains and brawn, and Bob Sapp could not keep up in the featured bout at Fight Force International "Ultimate Chaos."
The unbeaten Lashley took down Sapp in the opening seconds and grinded away with ground-and-pound until the larger-than-life Pride Fighting Championships and K-1 veteran tapped out to strikes 3:17 into round one on Saturday at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.
Lashley (4-0), who promised to fight Sapp standing in the pre-fight buildup, instead took the more intelligent route to victory.
"Going out there against somebody like Bob, you've got to be prepared," Lashley said. "I just wanted to get him down. I had to go out there take him down, cover him up, keep him flat and pound on him. That was our gameplan. You've got to wear the big man down. We've got other matches where we can test our stand-up."
from sherdog.com:
Bobby Lashley weighed 255.4 pounds Friday for his meeting with Bob Sapp, who tipped the scales at 322.2. The two meet Saturday in Biloxi, Miss., in the main event of Fight Force International's "Ultimate Chaos."

Here's Lashley's fight from last weekend at MFC. It's a very short fight that's got a lot of people crying "work." I don't know if that's because of Lashley's background as a WWE "Superstar" or because of Cook's lack of defense over a fairly simple hold, a front facelock, and his leg-flopping as the hold was being applied. You decide.
All I can say is we're going to have to wait several more months - at the least - for Lashley to get tested. His next fight is against Bob Sapp, and I don't see Sapp giving Lashley too many problems. Although Sapp outweighs Lashley, Lashley's got at least equal strength and seems to have a killer instinct that Sapp lacks.

"Ultimate Chaos" takes place June 27 in Biloxi, Miss. and is oc-promoted by Fight Force International and Prize Fight MMA.

Thanks to MMA Fanhouse:
Former WWE heavyweight champion Bobby Lashley will face MMA veteran Bob Sapp on June 27 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.
FanHouse has learned that MMA rookie officially signed his bout agreement late last night.
Lashley (2-0) recently defeated Jason Guida at the "March Badness" pay-per-view event in Pensacola, Fla. He will now face one of the biggest stars in Japanese MMA history. Sapp (10-3-1) last defeated Akihito Tanaka at the K-1 Dynamite!! New Year's Eve show in December. It was a bizarre sight to see as Tanaka was dressed as the Japanese anime character "Kinniku Mantaro" during the fight.
Jon Anik & co. talk to Bobby Lashley and his plans to rise in the heavyweight ranks, as well as a preview of Bellator Fighting Championships, for which Anik will provide English play-by-play.
Former WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley fought Jason Guida at the March Badness boxing-MMA event tonight and came away with a win, but from the reactions of those who were watching, it was an ugly win.
Here are some posts from sherdog's forums:
Fetus Fajitas: "Guida almost caught him with that guillotine."
Corey Conway: "Lashley is gassed. The boxing ref needs to know when to stand them up."
Bulletproof: "Bobby 'LnP' Lashley."
Ed Banger: Can't believe the ref stopped the fight when Guida was going for the first armbar... terrible ref. Lashley has so much to learn. I'd start with cardio..."
Bulletproof: "It looks like Lashley learned nothing at ATT."
King Herb: "Ugly fight. Was expecting a little more flash from Lashley. Have to give Guida credit for putting up a decent fight. Almost had that choke."
Light It Up: "Relax guys, it was his second fight against a veteran."
Samite: "Lashley vs Guida is a pretty boring fight, Guida isn't skilled enough to threaten from his back and Lashley isn't good enough at ground and pound to do any significent damage."
Samite: "Lashley looked most dangerous in the stand up, pity the fight didn't stay there."
Stevia_junkie: "Didn't Lashley wrestle at 180 in college? He needs to stop bodybuilding/"supplements" and cut to 205. He can't have cardio with that much muscle."
Who's Next: "Have to give Lashley a break. Only second fight against an experienced opponent.
Jason Guida was 232; Bobby Lashley weighed in at 251.5. They had another heated face-off with Guida getting right up in Lashley's grill. Then, you'll see Marcus "Conan" Silveira, an American Top Team instructor (and a bad-ass fighter back in the day), saying something to Lashley. Not sure what it was, but it probably went something like, "You'll get your revenge in the cage."
This Saturday, Bobby Lashley (1-0) will take on MMA journeyman Jason Guida (19-17) at March Badness, a hybrid boxing-MMA event in Florida. Looks to me like there's about 40 or more pounds, and a couple inches separating Lashley and Guida. Not insurmountable odds, but defintiely an advantage for Lashley.
You'll see in the video that Guida tries to intimidate Lashley by asking how long he's been training MMA, but Lashley remains calm ... not that I expected doubt to show on the face of Lashley, even if it did have an effect.
It's kind of like a poodle nipping at the heels of a pitbull, that is, unless the poodle has a switchblade. And the switchblade for Guida is experience, the kind you get only by stepping in the cage again and again. On the other hand, Lashley trains with one of the best camps in the counry, American Top Team, so we'll see if the crash course in MMA he's been given pays off. Guida has just slightly more than a puncher's chance. If he loses, my only hope is that Lashley will get picked up by a bigger organization and we can truly see him tested.
The other thing I find interesting is that now that boxing is declining, we're going to see more of these hybrid boxing-MMA events. I think most fans won't buy it, though. It's kind of like when they tried to bring rock and rap together - to me, it just didn't work.
My point is that we'll see more of it, though - boxers, boxing promoters - trying to attach themselves to MMA, since it's on the rise, even though they may have bashed it in the past. For the record, I've neber heard or read anything about Jones speaking negatively about MMA - and if he wants to be a fan, that's cool.

By Dann Stupp, mmajunkie:
The California State Athletic Commission has suspended UFC hall-of-famer and MMA trailblazer Ken Shamrock one year and fined him $2,500 after the 45-year-old failed a drug test due to numerous anabolic agents.
In an email sent to MMAjunkie.com, CSAC Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas stated that Shamrock tested positive for 19-Norandrosterone, 19-Noretiocholanolone and Stanozolol following a Feb. 13 Wargods event.
Shamrock had been slated to fight Bobby Lashley later this month at a "March Badness" hybrid MMA/boxing event.

Bobby Lashley

Ken Shamrock
from bloodyelbow.com:
Sources close to Bloody Elbow can exclusively confirm that the heretofore unnamed opponent of former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley set to square off at Roy Jones Jr.'s mixed boxing and MMA event known as "March Badness" is none other than Ken Shamrock.
Shamrock is coming off a recent submission victory over Ross Clifton at the inaugural Wargods event on February 13, 2009. Lashley is coming off of his professional MMA debut, stopping Joshua Franklin at a Mixed Fighting Alliance event on December 13, 2008. The bout between Lashley and Shamrock will be contested at heavyweight.
The Lashley vs. Shamrock bout is part of an hybrid boxing-mixed martial arts card being assembled and promoted by former Ring Magazine pound-for-pound greatest boxer alive in Roy Jones, Jr. Jones's promotional company, Square Ring Promotions, Inc., has scheduled the event to take place at the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Florida and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view. According to published reports, a press conference had been scheduled for Feb. 11 to formally announce the event. There are no updates and when or if there will be a formal press conference. The event itself is scheduled for March 21st.
Also appearing on the card will be Jones himself as he takes on Omar Sheika in a light heavyweight boxing bout. BJ Flores is also set to fight on the card, although the opponent has not yet been named.
In MMA action, former victor over Kimbo Slice and season two veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter" in Seth Petruzelli will lock horns with former WEC light heavyweight champion Doug "The Rhino" Marshall. Another MMA bout scheduled to take place involves former IFL heavyweight champion Roy Nelson taking on former UFC heavyweight contender Jeff "The Snowman" Monson.
Lashley will be fighting for only his second time in professional MMA competition, however, concerns have swirled surrounding Ken Shamrock's health and ability to fight at the professional level given his age as well as the damge he has sustained over the course of his career. Shamrock's only recent win comes against a 6-9 Ross Clifton. The 45 year-old has lost five of his last six professional matches and was removed from the EliteXC: Heat card in October of 2008 just hours prior to his fight due to injuries allegedly sustained during pre-fight warm-ups.
Excellent take-down and a quick cut gave Lashley the TKO win at his debut fight for Mixed Fighting Alliance's event in Florida. I say this is just not enough to get a clear picture of whether he can go further in his career. Both Lashley and his opponent were 0-0, and the fight was incredibly brief. We know Lashley has great wrestling, but can he transition to MMA with striking and jiu-jitsu as well? There aren't too many camps better than American Top Team, that's for sure. And it is waaaay too early to start talking about Lashley vs. Lesnar, although word is Lashley has his sights set on the UFC in 2010. Let's see him get a handful of fights in first.
from the MFA Web site:
Lashley is a three-time national collegiate champion wrestler from Missouri Valley College. His sheer size and strength, along with his extensive wrestling background, have unsurprisingly drawn comparisons to UFC heavyweight title contender Brock Lesnar.
He's currently under contract with the American Fight Leauge (AFL), but is making his debut under the MFA banner on loan because the AFL has decided to hold off on its first event until the Spring of 2009.
Not much is known about Lashley's opponent, Joshua Franklin, other than he's a 30-year-old fighter making his pro debut with a background in boxing and Brazilian jiu jitsu.
The main event of MFA: "There Will Be Blood" will be a heavyweight rematch between former UFC champion Ricco "Suave" Rodriguez (34-9) and Jeff "The Snowman" Monson (26-8). The two men previously fought at UFC 35 almost seven years ago with Ricco winning by third round technical knockout.

from mmajunkie.com:
Former collegiate wrestling standout and WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (0-0) will make his professional MMA debut for the Mixed Fighting Alliance on Dec. 13 in Miami.
Officials from the Florida-based organization recently confirmed Lashley's bout with fellow first-time fighter Joshua Franklin (0-0) with MMAjunkie.com.
Lashley will make the appearance while on loan from the American Fight League, who have elected to suspend operations until 2009.

AFL's core management: Sean McClure, Jon Hatton and BJ Santiago
Here's a news release from the American Fight League's Web site:
The American Fight League has made the decision to halt operations until the first quarter of 2009.
The organization's doors are still open and the roster of fighters remains the same.
AFL fighters are free to fight in whatever organization that they wish while maintaining their current contract status.
"Don't believe everything that you hear", CEO BJ Santiago said. "Big things will happen in 2009 for the American Fight League and it's fighters".
I really hope this isn't a harbinger of what's to come. In MMA, the more organizations we have - the more QUALITY organizations we have *** cough, cough EliteXC cough, cough*** the better, and the AFL certainly has some promise. They received some decent press for signing former WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley, and had planned an event for U.S. troops. We'll see what happens from here on out.
