YMMAA's Technique of the Week - week 1

| | Comments (0)

George McGinnis, owner of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion, presents a new series, called Technique of the Week. George is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Tatu Taborda in Scranton. Here's George's description of the video:

This is our first "Technique of the week" video. Here you will see Coach Brad Souders and myself demonstrating what we call "Leg Lasso" and we show in detail how to transition into an 'Omoplata'. I have played with similar positions like this before, but this particular variation was shown to us by Renaldo (De La Riva black belt). Note: Some people don't really push for the "Leg Lasso" position much due to their fear of either losing the position or being leg locked. If you control your opponents sleeves and maintain space, it would honestly be extremely difficult for them to leg lock you once you have fully committed to the position...

Brad Souders: correcting BJJ problems

An email from Brad Souders, of Extreme Sportsplex in Martinsburg, W. Va., sent me these videos the other day with this note:

"Here are two videos i shot last night on two common bjj problems. The first deals with the popular knee cut pass and the second is one counter to the brabo choke which is becoming popular in no gi grappling.

Sorry about the boxer show and notice my gut hanging haha and for added Matt,Mark, and Grove notice the shirt lol."

Genki Sudo music video

Video was sent to me by Brad Souders. George McGinnis then sent his comments to me:
"My boy Genki is at it again. I received an email from Coach Brad Souders that listed a link to one of Genki Sudo's music video's in which he wrote, performed in and produced. One thing I love about the guy is that he doesn't allow himself to be bound by the laws of any one style in regards to MMA or personality. We could all learn a lot from him not just on the mat and MMA, but how he chooses to live in general. I can really appreciate the fact that he isn't afraid to express himself creatively and through his passion for music. You would honestly be surprised how many fighters have a hidden knack for music. Some quick names that come to mind is Oscar Del La Hoya (Boxing World Champion), Kaensak (Muay Thai World Champion), Genki Sudo MMA legend and pioner and I do believe during my travels that GSP has expressed an interest in the music industry as well. Who woulda knew right?..."

Sincerely Yours: George McGinnis

de la Riva gives an in-depth look at his guard.

Brad Souders, of Extreme Sportsplex in Martinsburg, W. Va., sent me a link to this site, grapplearts.com, for an in-depth look at the de la Riva guard:

Ricardo de la Riva is a slight unassuming man with a gentle smile. Talking to him it is hard to imagine that this man is on the cutting edge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Voted as one of the top five technical fighters of all times by his peers, every BJJ school on the planet is teaching his famous de la Riva guard.

Nobody could have imagined the impact this skinny 15 year old kid would have on the jiu-jitsu world, when he walked into one of Carlson Gracie's affiliate schools in Copacabana and started training under the then brown belt Marcus Soares. When Marcus closed his gym, de la Riva started training at Carlson Gracie's main academy; de la Riva had previously impressed Carlson by beating Carlson's nephew in an inter-academy tournament.

George McGinnis, owner of York Academy of Mixed Martial Arts, recently attended a seminar at the academy of his instructor, Rogerio "Tatu" Taborda, in Scranton. There, Tatu received a stripe to add to his black belt from instructor Paulo Guimaraes, a black belt who hails from Australia.

So, the lineage would go like this Rickson Gracie -- Jorge Pereira -- Paulo Guimaraes -- Rogerio Taborda -- George McGinnis.

Now that's amazing.

Brad Souders received a stripe to his purple belt, George received his purple belt, and George's brother, Brett Myers, received his blue belt.

Congrats to all you guys from MMA Explosion.
