Biff Walizer to fight in Scranton on 6/12

cage_fight1_mini.jpg
I've already talked about LionHeart Fighter's Lou Armezzani fighting in front of a home-town crowd at PA Cage Fight's Cage Fight 1, on June 12 at the Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton.

Well, Jerod Phillips, whose Hanover-based fightwear company, Tap or Sleep, sponsors York County pro Biff Walizer, told me last night Biff will be on the card as well.

Biff, an All-American wrestler at Penn State, is now 3-4. His last fight was a third-round submission loss on April 30 at Respect Is Earned's inaugural event. Biff mangled his foot in that fight and took some time off, but recently got back to training.

Biff will be taking on Spencer "The Punisher" Paige (5-2), in the event's "Feature fight", just below the main event.

Returning to his hometown of Scranton, PA, Lou will be fighting at the Riverfront Sports Complex on Friday June 12th.

Just talked with Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep, who is at the Iron Will Fighting Championship event in Johnstown. And, unlike the last event he was at, this one was a good night.

First, Lou Armezzani (a one-time York County resident who now trains at LionHeart Fighters in State College) started his pro MMA career off with a bang, pulling an armbar on his opponent in 37 seconds. Congrats, Lou. You're on your way, bro.

And, in the main event, Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman put on "a dominating performance" as Jerod put it, unleashing a vicious ground-n-pound. Jerod said Brenneman's opponent tapped out to strikes in the second round. "Charlie's one tough sumbitch," Jerod said. The win puts Charlie's record at 8-1. Niiiice.

Lou Armezzani - fresh from a win, and is that that fresh blood on his gloves?

York went 2-1 at the recent Onslaught Mixed Martial Arts Cage Fighting event in Virginia. Jerod Phillips, of Tap or Sleep fightwear, was there to support the guys: Lou Armezzani, who at one time lived in York, and now trains at LionHeart Fighters in State College, and Steve Kaufman and Nate Vantassel of Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts.

Iron Will Fighting Championship in Johnstown on May 16

Not too long ago, I mentioned that there would be an MMA event in Johnstown. Well, I did some digging, and found out a little bit more about it. Here's a message I found on a message board. From the looks of their card, ( a lot of "TBDs") they still might be looking for fighters.

"As some of us know mma has become legal in PA WE are looking for some pro fighters and amateur fighters various weight classes. For an event in Johnstown Pa at the Cambria County War Memorial May 16 2009 Contacts Ironwillfighting.com josh.breto@ironwillfighting.com Regalas @ Breto Promotions 209 Grant St , South Fork Pa 15956 Cambria Martial Arts Academy Cambriamartialarts.com"

Also, Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep said Bill Walizer will be on the card, facing Corey Mahon. Another Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter, Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman, will be there, taking on Marcus Ajian. In addition, two guys from LionHeart Fighters are the card, Lou Armezzani, who recently won in Virginia, and Matt Kocher.

I just spoke with Jerod Phillips of York-based Tap or Sleep fightwear. He's down at the Sportsplex in Winchester, Virginia, supporting some local guys fighting on the Onslaught Mixed Martial Arts Cage Fighting card, titled "Unleashed."

Jerod said Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts' Nate Vantassel won in the second round of his welterweight fight against Shawn Hill with a knee to the face. Nice work, Nate.

Still to come on the card are two middleweight fights: Hanover's Steve Kauffman takes on Aaron Carter and LionHeart Fighter's Lou Armezzani faces Nick Robinson. I'll have details on those ifghts hopefully later on tonight. Steve and Lou - best of luck to you guys.

LionHeart Fighters ready for battle

Just had a conversation with Chad Dubin, head honcho at LionHeart Fighters, and he got me up-to-date on all of the goings-on there at one of the biggest and best MMA academies in the state.

First of all, unfortunately, Jim Hettes and Lou Armezzani lost their fights last month at Combate Extremo in the Dominican Republic. Hettes was submitted and Armezzani lost by split decision, Dubin said.

"No excuses. They got beat," Dubin said.

Both Hettes and Armezzani will return to action at a King of the Cage event Jan. 17, Dubin said.

LionHeart light-heavyweight Phil Davis and middleweight-turned-welterweight Paul Bradley are in California right now, training for their upcoming fights. They'll stop to train with Brandon Vera in San Diego and then with Dan Henderson in Temecula.

"They're totally pumped about it," Dubin said of the West Coast training tour.

Davis fights at the Palace Fighting Championship on Jan. 22 and Bradley takes on UFC veteran Roan Carneiro on Feb. 6 at a World Cagefighting Alliance event.

In addition, new LionHeart member Shannon Slack will fight for Palace Fighting Championships on Feb. 6, Dubin said.

Best of luck to all the LionHeart Fighters from MMA Explosion.

Undefeated Paul Bradley, 9-0, moves down to welterweight to fight UFC veteran Roan Carneiro, who has a 12-8 record. Bradley and the American Top Team member square off at the World Cagefighting Alliance event on Feb. 6.

Middleweight Lou Armezzani and featherweight Jim Hettes will travel down to the Dominican Republic for Combate Extremo on Dec. 20.

Best of luck to all the LionHeart Fighters from MMA Explosion.

Back with a vengeance, Tom and I had a special guest this week, George McGinnis, owner and trainer at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy. The three of us break down the Kimbo fight and subsequent fall-out, as well as how York fighters did at Gladiator Fight Club. George added some great (and much-needed) insight into the fight game, rather than just a couple schmoes like Tom and me talking.

Here's the latest from LionHeart:

Congradulation to Lou Armezzani who won by first round TKO at The Gladiator Fight Championships in Virgina this weekend to improve his amateur record to 3-1. Lou seems to have recovered just fine from the elbow injury which kept him out of his last fight. Nice work Louie.

Paul Bradley is looking to extend his unblemished Professional record to 7-0 this coming Saturday Oct 4th in Cleveland, OH. Ticket and venue information can be found at www.naafs.tv. Come out and support Paul as he continues his impressive streak.

Video footage of Phil Davis and Matt Kocher's fights from Sept 19th can be found on www.purefight.org and will also be on our website soon.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our VIP event this weekend. We had a great time hanging out with everyone and look forward to seeing more of you at future LionHeart fights and events.
