Just watched Justin "Skiz" Scott vs. Jesse Finch, who fought at the WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos on Friday night. Scott, of York, worked an excellent ground game and scored an arm bar victory early in the first round. Scott, who is 7-0 as an amateur, trains at MACE in Red Lion.

For anyone out there - like me - trying to watch the WKU Warrior Challenge on USTREAM, looks like all the shows for some reason are set to Pacific time. So, although the show started at 7 p.m. EST., the broadcast on USTREAM doesn't start until 1845 (6:45 p.m.) PST, which would be 9:45 p.m. EST.

Here's an email I received from Bob Bitner of Hanover Academy of MMA:

Jay Haas now holds the featherweight title at Operation Octagon. The first round was very action-packed, constantly flipping back and forth, with Jay coming out on top. The second round was just as intense, with Jay pulling it out with a few leg kicks and some elbows from the mount. The third round went right to the mat, and Justin gained control with the side mount, clearly winning that round. After three grueling five-minute rounds, where each fighter gave it their all, the fight ended in a very tight split decision. This resulted in Jay's fourth win and earned him the honor of holding the belt for the featherweight division.

This is now the fifth title for Hanover Academy of MMA. We are very proud of our accomplishments this far, and look forward to what the future brings.

The next event scheduled for Hanover MMA is April 11,2009 - Onslaught Fights in Winchester, Va. at the Winchester Sportsplex.

Tom and I talk about Lyoto-Evans and the upcoming Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge

Last month, I posted news of an MMA academy opening up in York, the city of York, that is.

Well, I just had a conversation with co-owner Llew Chester, who said construction is going just fine and that the place should be open by mid-month.

Chester said the school will be called the Academy of Combative Arts, and will feature classes in kickboxing, boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts.

Daniel Beleza, a second-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, will be teaching classes at the academy, Chester said.

The academy will be located around the back of the Greyhound bus station, 53 E. North St., between the baseball stadium and the new Codo apartments, Chester said.

I'll have more information as it becomes available.

Last week I reported that an MMA event will be held in York in April ... and that's still true. There's just been some new developments, most of them good.

Mark Jovich, head trainer at Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland, told me that when he delivered all of his paperwork for the April 25 event he was planning, he found out a much larger promotion, one that has a TV deal, also wanted that day. And although Mark had been planning on that date for some time, the other promotion technically got their stuff filed before him. And, in pennsylvania, promotions with TV deals take precedence.

Well, that's water over the dam, because Mark's show will happen, and now it will be a week earlier.

Here's what it boils down to:
What: Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge
When: April 19.
Time: Weigh-ins at 10 a.m., fights start at 2 p.m.
Where: Wisehaven Banquet and Expo Center.
Price: General admission, $25.00; VIP Seating, $50.00.

As you can see, the time and the place have changed as well. Mark's very excited about the event being held at Wisehaven. It's got a sweet balcony, where he'll put VIP seating (in addition to the first two rows around the ring).

Starting earlier in the day means getting more fights in, he said.
"We have so many bouts and so many fighters that we wanted to star early," he said. "Four extra bouts - that's eight kids I won't have to disappoint."

Hey York, are you ready for this?!?

Mark Jovich, head trainer at Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland, has been approved to promote an amateur/professional MMA event in York at the Holiday Inn on Loucks Road on Saturday, April 25, he told me today.

The event is called the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge.

I met with Mark and his planning committee earlier this week at the Holiday Inn, where he showed me a list of possible bouts - three pages long. This will definitely bring the sport into the state with a bang, people. Mark had inquiries from more than 65 fighters, both from York County and surrounding states. As it looks right now, one side of the card should be all local guys, and the other side fighters from the other states.

Doors at the Holiday Inn, also known as "The Holidome," located at 2000 Loucks Road, West Manchester Township, open at 5 p.m. The main ballroom, where the event is being held, can only seat about 800.

Today I spoke with Greg Sirb, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. He said promoter and fighter forms, as well as a complete set of rules for MMA are available now on the SAC Web site.

Promoters who pre-registered with Sirb have been mailed out their promoter's packets, he said.

As far as a first show, he said, "We're just waiting to see."

With the sport's approval a little than 24 hours behind us -- well, technically, it's not really official until Friday -- I've been thinking about things ... I know, I know, dangerous prospect. Anyway, you could've probably figured these out on your own, but I thought I would write 'em down.

-- We're going to see an explosion (pardon the pun) of MMA organizations here in the state, both on a local, regional and state-wide basis. In addition, promoters from outside the state will try to set up shop here. Greg Sirb, executive director of the state athletic commission, said the first event should be in either late April or early May.

-- I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see the UFC in the state for a while. The Las Vegas-based company holds many of its events right there in Sin City. They also seem to be concentrating a lot of their energies on building up markets like Canada and England. That being said, it would serve them to make an appearance here on the East Coast, something I don't think they've done in a while. Staging an event in Philly, it being fairly close to New York, might help show politicians in the Empire State all of the benefits they're misisng out on by not having it there. Let's not forget the Holy Grail of MMA: UFC title fight(s) at the most famous arena in the world: Madison Square Garden.

-- OK, so if not the UFC, then who? Sirb said we might see a big show in the state by the end of the year. Well, Strikeforce just bought EliteXC, so I see them expanding outside their comfortable base of San Jose, Calif. EliteXC held several shows on the East Coast, so is it that much of a stretch to see Strikeforce do the same?

LIke I said, just a few random thoughts. If I think of any more, I'll let you know.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission voted unanimously to sanction the combat sport in the state.

Two fighters enter a cage or a ring, years of grueling training behind them, to match their skills and strategy in what some have called the purest form of combat - mixed martial arts.

It won't be long before Pennsylvanians get to see the sport that has skyrocketed in popularity around the country and the world, right in their own backyard, said Greg Sirb, executive director of the state athletic commission.

On Monday, the commission unanimously approved the rules and regulations that it drafted about two years ago.

"Everybody felt real comfortable with the rules," Sirb said of the commission. "We're excited to join the ranks of Ohio and New Jersey to give our kids the chance to display their crafts in Pennsylvania."

I spoke to Greg Sirb, executive director of the Pa. state athletic commission on Friday. He said the commission's meeting, where they will vote on legalizing MMA, is still on for tomorrow (Monday) morning. I hope to have a correspondent there, so as soon as it happens, I'll let you guys know.

Here's my original post from Jan. 14:
Just got off the phone with Greg Sirb, executive director of the Pa. State Athletic Commission. He said last week the Attorney General's office signed off on the rules and regulations to legalize mixed martial arts in the state.

Next and last step: A commission meeting at 11 a.m., room 302 of the "north office building," which Sirb says is directly behind the capital.

"All we have to do is meet," Sirb said. "I don't think there will be any speed bumps."

For prospective promoters, you should get in touch with Greg, either by phone at 717-787-5720, or by email. He'll put your name on a list, and after the Feb. 23 meeting, packets will be sent out.

Before a promoter can hold an event, the packets need to be completed, which include a police background check and a $15,000 bond, among other things, he said.

Sirb said about 35-40 promoters had already contacted him. He added that once the events get going, either he or one of his representatives will be at every event, making sure things run according to the rules and regs.

"We're going to watch them like a hawk ... just like we do with boxing," he said.

On Thursday, I interviewed former professional kickboxer - and York resident - Llew Chester, who told me about a new MMA academy he's opening in York City next month.

Chester said the school will be called the Academy of Combative Arts, and will feature classes in kickboxing, boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts.

The academy will be located around the back of the Greyhound bus station, 53 E. North St., between the baseball stadium and the new Codo apartments, Chester said.

Tom and I talk about what going on MMA-wise in York and the state, and also discuss some of the other events going on this weekend, including UFC 95.

Last week, I spoke with a local guy named Larry Novak who started up an MMA clothing company called Tattoo Fightwear.

Novak, of New Cumberland, who is a health and physcial education teacher in the Harrisburg School District, started the company about a year ago, in anticipation of the sport's legalization in Pennnsylvania.

"I was waiting for MMA to come to Pa," he said. "I had a feeling it was going to be here anyway, so I started the company."

Once the sport is legalized - which more than likely will happen Feb. 23 - Novak is ready to sponsor fighters and events. He's already connected with Mark Jovich, owner of Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland, and with Williamsport fighter Louis "The Beast" Rumsey of Team Vicious MMA.

Jerod Phillips, who runs Tap or Sleep fightwear, sent me this photo taken after Biff Walizer's recent win at Intimidation Cage Fighting in Florence, Kentucky. Biff, who fights for LionHeart Fighters, used an unorthodox (at least in MMA) submission, which Jerod calls "Bread 'n' Butter" for the win in the third round.

This was the last one Tom Joyce and I recorded - where we interview Biff Walizer over the phone and I have to take off because of some crazy stand-off in the city - that apparently no one could listen to. I'm practically computer illiterate, so excuse me. Anyway, I hope it works this time. Later.

Just got a call from Jerod Phillips, who said Biff won his fight in the third round. Mick Berwinger tapped out to a combination arm lock/neck crank. Congrats, Biff. You da man.

George "Phoenix" McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy sent me an email about a new site called jiujitsushare, which touts itself as the "myspace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu." From a quick look around, it seems to live up to the nickname.

The site was set up by Phil Migliarese of Balance Studios in Philadelphia, a Relson Gracie-affiliated school.

Here's a quote from George:
"The site seems pretty cool and I think it will produce a lot of good ties between other schools as well as information sharing. The site has clips, photo's, club information and communication tools. If you have the chance, sign your club up. If you are a student and or friend of the YMMAA, sign up as a student or solo practitioner under our school or an affiliated club."

York County's own Biff Walizer, a lightweight pro out of Windsor Townhip, is scheduled to get back into the fighting game, after a series of mishaps and injuries. He's been training in York and also with Team LionHeart in State College.

Among the Keystone Games competitors today (July 27th 08) were YMMAA representatives George McGinnis and Wayne Schaffer. To accompany them with technical support was long time friend and coach, Charles Parker.

McGinnis and Schaffer competed in both Masters and Seniors. McGinnis would go on to place 3rd in Men's Masters middle weight and Schaffer would go on to place 2nd in Men's Masters light. McGinnis was bumped out of the Seniors division his fourth fight in by a controversial (Ipon) call that even had the audience pleading with disappointment. Schaffer was eliminated his 3rd fight in by Ipon.

Here's a few words regarding the event and the importance behind Judo. McGinnis: "I have been doing B.J.J now for a few years but I have to admit that previously one of the major draw backs to my overall game was take downs. Since I have committed time and consistent effort to Judo and becoming more well rounded, events like today help me gauge were I am one event to the next. I'd like to thank my friend Chuck for being persistent and patient with me through my Judo development. Today was for you my friend!" McGinnis, Parker and several others are scheduled to compete in numerous B.J.J / Judo tournaments over the next two months.

There's a judo tournament tomorrow (Sunday) at the Keystone Games, for anyone who may want to compete or watch.

It's being held at the York Expo Center, Memorial Hall West, and weigh-ins are from 9-10:30 a.m.

"The new / current location of the Club is at the Fitness Factory in Red Lion PA. The address for the building is 27 South Main St. Red Lion PA 17356. All you really need to do is make your way to the square of Red Lion and you are there. Please park in the large parking lot available to all at the square. You will find the building to be adjacent to the parking lot. We are located on the 3rd floor."

"I / we will be working on the building over the course of the next several weeks so please bear with us if it doesn't immediately appear as a five star hotel ... We are also expected to take on furniture and or donations to help improve the building and our training area so if you think you may be of some help, please don't hesitate to contact me. The building on the whole is in pretty good shape."

"The schedule has changed a little but not much. I will at some point be adding a kids class from 6:30 to 7:25pm, beginners will then run from 7:30 to 8:30, advanced from 8:30 to 9:00:pm and then open mat until 10:pm. We do have 24-hour access to the building and training area so if you would like to schedule privates, feel free to contact me and we'll schedule you accordingly."

I just got back from Hooters of York where I saw Forrest Griffin win in five rounds by unanimous decision over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Virtually no one gave Griffin a shot at winning, as he was a 3-1 underdog, but the winner of the first Ultimate Fighter reality show delivered, making Rampage look slow and out-of-shape.

The fight was definitely a battle of strategy and a contrast in styles. Griffin, tall and rangy, stayed on the outside for the most part, chopping at Jackson with jabs and leg kicks, also the occasional mid and head kick. Jackson, shorter and more muscular, was, as expected, the power puncher.

Forrest kept the pressure up the entire fight, using his superior conditioning. Rampage showed up a little soft in the belly, and I think that affected his performance, especially in the 5th round, where he mustered very little offense.

Forrest dominated Jackson on the ground as well, pinning him there for nearly an entire round, and going for several submissions.

Also as expected, Griffin bled, with Jackson opening a thick cut over his Forrest's right eye. But, undeterred, Griffin soldiered on and came out the UFC light heavyweight champion.

A few things to consider here: Who will Griffin face next, as his first title defense? Will it be the undefeated Lyoto Machida, the man no one in the UFC seems to want to fight? Or will it be Jackson with an immediate re-match? How about Chuck Liddell, if he wins over Rashad Evans?

I've got a great idea: We know Wanderlei Silva and Rampage have this long-standing feud. Silva's beaten Rampage twice, and is on a roll with his quick KO of Keith Jardine. Let's see the two of them go at it again, with the winner taking on Griffin.

Oh, and one more thing: Rampage's trainer and manager, Juanito Ibarra, said before the fight that he would retire if Rampage lost. Well, that's happened, so what will happen to Ibarra? He can stay on as Rampage's trainer for all I care, as long as he loses that silly hat he always wears.

Here's an excerpt from the Regulatory Analysis Form on MMA prepared by the state Athletic Commission:

Q: Provide a specific estimate of the costs and/or savings to state government associated with the implementation of the regulation, including any legal, accounting or consulting procedures that may be required.

A: There are no costs or savings to state government associated with the implementation of the rulemaking, because the state Athletic Commission is self-supporting and uses no General Fund monies. The Commission generated over $350,000 in net revenue in 2007, which is deposited into the Athletic Commission Augmentation Account. The Commission will incur additional costs in enforcing the regulation. However, the Commission expects there will be 15-20 MMA events per year, which has the potential to increase Commission revenues by $50,000 to $80,000, generated through the Commission's 5 % tax on gross gate receipts.

Hmmm. I'm thinking that's a bit of a low-ball number right there, $50,000-80,000, and another low-ball as far as how many shows will be held per year. Money talks. There's no way the state's legislators are going to let it walk across the borders now that there's set of legitimate, safe rules and regs out there that should be approved.

Greg Sirb

Just talked with Greg Sirb, director of the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission, checking in once again on how the state's MMA rules and regulations are doing in the process of getting into law.

"So far, so good," he said. "I'm looking for something hopefully by the end of the year."

Sirb said the rules and regs are now before the state's Independent Regulatory Review Commission, who have, on occasion, e-mailed Sirb's agency with questions on the 15-20 page package that the athlectic commission prepared.

"It's just such a long process," he said.

Although there have not been any serious challenges to the rules and regs, "It's not everybody's cup of tea," he said.

You're damn right it's not. And that's the way I like it.

Anyway, Sirb said that government officials are aware of other nearby states that have approved similar rules and regs packages, like New Jersey and Ohio. And Maryland seems poised to make their rules and regs law. That's money going over the border.

And with a big city like Philadelphia, I belt the UFC and other major organizations would just love to pull into town, put on a great show and rake in the money, which means the state rakes in the money too. Yes, Sirb said, lawmakers know about that too.

Well, folks, all I can say is stay tuned. Yeah, it's a long process, and I sure am getting tired of it too. Whattayagonnado, right?

Dominic "Nick" Dorm, who promoted a boxing event at York City's Valencia Ballroom in March, is interested in bringing MMA to York. He can't do that right now, because the rules and regs are slowly chug-chug-chugging their way through the legislature.

In the meantime, he's organizing a bus trip to New Jersey to see a New Breed Fighters show.

Here's what he said in a recent email to me:

Tickets are $60. We are having Tshirts made that shows we want MMA in PA, and also, so that we stand out in the crowd. Their cost is figured into the $60 price listed.

My own inquiry for Bus transportation added another $35.00 to the cost. And the Bus companies here are pretty well booked so if folks want to go that route they would have to make a decision to purchase p.d.q. We would need to have their money no less than nine days before the show; and the longer they wait the less the possibility of finding an available charter to get them there.

I am scrambling to do another show so that we can reserve that transportation ahead of time. Bad timing for Class Act to fund the trip in advance, but the right time to show support for the sport.

Just wanted to let you guys know I read on another blog that Pennsylvania might be blacked out from watching the EliteXC card on CBS this Saturday. I don't like to fling stuff around if I don't know it's true, but I just wanted to prepare you in case it is. In the meantime, I'm going to try to get a response from CBS or EliteXC, see what I can find out. Stay tuned.

Bob Bitner, founder and head instructor at Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts, said that one of his school's fighters, Ryan Harder, took the bantamweight title at last weekend's Operation Octagon event in Manassas, Va.

Bitner said Harder won at 31 seconds into the first round with a KO over former champ Justin Hickey.

"This win for us was huge," Bitner said, going on to describe the fight: "They exchanged a couple kicks, tried to feel each other out. It looked like Justin Hickey tried to shoot on him (Harder). He left himself open, and Ryan delivered a right hook and it was lights out."

Bitner said Hickey, from Gold Medal Grappling in Woodbridge, Va., is an "extremely tough kid."

The in marks the second Operation Octagon title for Hanover. Fighter Jeff Smith is the current featherweight champ.

Mark Jovich, who runs the Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland, will be holding a week-long, 8-hour-a-aday Mixed Martial Arts camp this summer, July 14-18.

Binky Jones, Jerod Phillips and Biff Walizer at Ground Control in Baltimore.

Windsor Township MMA pro Biff Walizer broke a toe on his left foot Thursday and is out of his May 17 Cage of Chaos fight, said his manager, Jerod Phillips.

Walizer injured the toe training near State College in preparation for his 150-pound fight with David Sachs at the event in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Phillips called Cage of Chaos promoter Dave Klick on Saturday to deliver the bad news.

"It's basically bad timing," Phillips said. "If the fight was in June, we'd be fine."

Phillips said Walizer's left foot "is all bruised up ... his toe's all purple."

Still, Phillips was confident that Walizer would make a quick recovery.

"He's going to be off for a couple weeks. We'll be back to Ground Control (MMA Academy in Baltimore) by the first week in June," he said. "If he's gonna fight, he's gonna be 100 percent ... We'll definitely be getting him in the cage ... end of June or July."

On April 19, Gladiator Fight Club held an amateur event in Virginia at which several York area fighters competed. Louis Armezzani, of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, was able to extend his MMA record to 2-0 with a unanimous decision victory.

He was set to take on an opponent of 6’4” 185 – 205 lbs. with a muay Thai background, but his scheduled opponent failed to comply with the weight divisions specified by the Gladiator Fight Club. He was rescheduled the day of the event to face off against a fighter from Steve Blackman’s camp in Harrisburg who held a previous record of 3-1.

Blackman’s fighter stepped up to the plate and agreed to fight that same night. It was three solid rounds of non-stop high-paced action where it was said by many that evening to have been the “fight of the night."

McGinnis, who owns YMMAA, said of the event: “Me and Brad (Souders) are quite pleased with the unanimous decision. I mean, of course we all like to see the finish, but unanimous is by far better than a controversial split. Louie showed clear and present control the first two rounds and the final round was likely a draw. Both fighters showed an enormous amount of heart and I am glad that Lou had the chance to fight such a gamer this early in his carrier”. Armezzani, as well as some of his fellow teammates, are said to be scheduled for the same venue on July 19.

Also at the Gladiator Fight Club's event, two fighters from Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts competed.

Jeff Smith, fighting at 155 pounds, lost a five-round decision for the organziation's lightweight belt.

"It was a good fight; unfortunately, they left it up to the judges and that one didn't go our way," said Hanover coach and owner Bob Bitner.

Shannon Lanier, competing in the heavyweight division, lost by first-round stoppage due to punches, Bitner said.

Moving forward from the recent losses, the Hanover team is looking to the future: on May 17, Ryan Harder, the academy's co-founder, will fight for Operation Octagon's bantamweight title in Manassas, Va.

Walizer

Windsor Township's Biff Walizer has an opponent at the upcoming Cage of Chaos show in Ohio, but it won't be Khristian Geraci.

Cage of Chaos owner and promoter Dave Klick said that about 10 days ago, he received an email from Geraci, who told him he had a broken hand and woudln't be able to fight Walizer at Cage of Chaos' "Overthrow" event on May 17 in St. Clairsville, OH.

So Klick set about finding Walizer another opponent for the 145-pound fight. He found one in Pittsburgh Fight Club member David Sachs.

"They're both similar," in their fighting styles, Klick said. "It should make for a really good match."

As for Geraci, he did not return a phone or email query from MMAExplosion. Geraci's pull-out prompted Walizer's manager, Jerod Phillips, to communicate with Geraci through myspace on Monday night. The conversation between the two grew heated, with Geraci insulting Phillips and Walizer, and Phillips offering Geraci $1,000 "to show up like he's supposed to," Phillips said.

"My personal opinion is he (Geraci )never wanted any part of Biff Walizer," Phillips said.

Here it is - the debut of MMA Explosion at Hooter's! I was there, along with my co-worker and camera-guy Tom Joyce, to interview fans, Hooter girls and to capture all the excitement that was UFC 83. Keep in mind I'm a writer, not a TV news guy, so if I look like an idiot, I've never done this type of thing before. Pro MMA fighter Biff Walizer, who hails from Windsor Township, is preparing for his next fight against Pittsburgh's Khristian Geraci on May 17 at Cage of Chaos' "Overthrow" event in St. Clairsville, OH.

Several weeks ago, Biff's manager, Jerod Phillips, took him down to Renzo Gracie-affiliated Ground Control MMA Academy in Baltimore. I was able to tag along and got some great footage. I want to send out a thanks to all the guys there at Ground Control, especially owner John Rallo and pro MMA fighter James "Binky" Jones.

Ignore the "Kitty Hawk, NC" thing. I just needed a photo and this was the one I picked.

A good time was had by all at Hooters of York on Saturday for UFC 83 ... well, except for all you Serra fans ... Anyway, I was over there with my co-worker and camera guy Tom Joyce interviewing fans and Hooter girls. The place was packed, the crowd was loud, the drinks were flowin' and the food was rollin'. So stay tuned to see the video.

Two local fighters, representing the Hanover Academy of MMA, will be fighting at the Gladiator Fight Club's amateur event, Gladitaor III - Quest For Valor, in Winchester, Va. tomorrow (Saturday).

Jeff Smith, who origionally hails from Ohio, has a solid wrestling base, and now trains in muay Thai and jiu-jitsu at the academy. Smith is 5'9" and 145, and has a 3-0 MMA record and a 9-0 submission record. He already has the 145-pound Operation Octagon title and on Saturday, is challenging for the Gladiator Fight Club 145-pound title.

Shannon Lanier is making his MMA debut at the event, and the 6'5", 255-pound fighter has more than 20 years in the martial arts, training mainly in karate, kickboxing and muay Thai. Now, at the academy, Lanier said his training encompasses the entire MMA game.

Lanier said last week he's looking forward to the challenge the fight presents, "To put some stuff into action; see what works, see what doesn't work."

Brazilian black belt Rogerio "Tatu" Taborda made the drive from Scranton to teach a seminar at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, held at Gold's Gym North in Manchester Township. Taborda also promoted George McGinnis and Brad Souders, who have dedicated years to training jiu-jitsu. Congrats to George and Brad.

Windsor Township pro fighter Biff Walizer is back in the fight game after a several month lay-off while he took time out for family and head wrestling coach duties at Red Lion Area High School.

Walizer is matched up against Iron City MMA head instructor Khristian "The Sandman" Geraci in the 136-145-weight division at the Cage of Chaos event on May 17 in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

The weight class is a good one for Walizer - he was ripped at 155, so he's going to be a big 145-pounder. Walizer last competed in September - his first pro fight - where he lost by KO to Eddie Fyvie at Ring of Combat's Beasts of the Northeast tournament in NJ.

Walizer, a competitor to the core, vowed to come back when the time was right.

An All-American wrestler from Penn State, Walizer has also trained with several instructors and fighters in the York area in striking and jiu-jitsu. He's represented by Jerod Phillips, who sells clothing through Tap or Sleep and Pimp My Triangle.

Earlier this month, George McGinnis' York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, which holds classes at Gold's Gym North, hosted a jiu-jitsu seminar led by Lloyd Irvin black belt Danny Ives. I was able to capture a portion of the seminar on video and also talked with George and Danny. UFC 80 - Rapid Fire, which features Joe "Daddy" Stevenson and BJ "The Prodigy" Penn fighting for the UFC lightweight title, is being held in England. That means start time "across the pond" as they say, will be pretty early over here - 3 p.m. to be exact.

That's OK, because Hooter's in York has got it covered, said Jason, one of the managers there. They'll have the live simulcast at 3 p.m. on Saturday, and then for all you late Saturday workin' stiffs like myself, they'll have it again at 10 p.m.

Mark Jovich, head instructor at Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy, has started a blog to keep everyone updated with news, videos and other things related to the academy. In addition to teaching traditional Okinawan karate, Mark also has put together a tough MMA team that had an amazing run in 2007 at several amateur events in New York, and as they gain more experience, will no doubt do even better.

Note from Ted: Souders earned his blue belt in BJJ under his cousin Eric Grove. He recently added three stripes under Rogerio "Tatu" Taborda and said he hopes to make purple by the end of '08. Souders has affiliated the school he and McGinnis plan to open with Tatu's school in Scranton; Tatu will also come down to York to train with students here.

Team: YMMAA (York Mixed Martial Arts Academy)

On December 2nd a small team from the local area traveled to D.C to compete in the US Grappling Championships. Among the competitors was George McGinnis of Manchester and Brett Myers of York.

McGinnis competed in the Executive (No Gi) division at 179.5 pounds, earning second place and then went on to win gold in the executive Gi division. McGinnis also managed to deliver two shut-out victories and two submissions during his combined five matches.

Myers fought in the men's No Gi 160 - 169.9 pound division, winning his first match (via advantage points) but fell short of his third place finish by a close third round match that went to points.

Here's an e-mail I received from Brad Souders on Wednesday. Souders, as you may have read here, is planning to open up an MMA school in York.

Last night I got the go-ahead e-mail from Rogerio "Tatu" Taborda to join his assiocation and affiliate my jiu-jitsu with him. Over the past couple months I have gone to Scranton several times; I am headed there this Saturday as well, and have become very good friends with him and his family.

So my plan is for George (McGinnis) and I to run our school in York and once a week drive to Scranton and train with Tatu. And also have him down to York to train with the newer students as well. One thing I really enjoy about him is he is 129 pounds but he makes sure each training session he rolls with all the belt colors.

On Dec. 12th I will be in York (at Gold's Gym North) to do a mini-seminar on sweeps and we are going to shoot some video and such for our site. I will try to come with some fancy stuff to put up that you guys should get a kick out of, plus I will have Grand Master Grove to come shoot a commerical for us in the near future.

Let me know whats going on with everyone else and how things are running. Anyone on this list is free to come train at my school anytime and i will let you guys know when I plan on having Tatu down for a seminar. Also I am planning on traveling to Delaware in the near future to train with 7x World Champion Robson Moura if anyone is interested in a trip.

Got a call from local MMA pro Biff Walizer who said he and two others went to the Grapplers Quest event in New Jersey on Nov. 11.

Walizer said he entered the men's no-gi executive division (30-39 years of age) for 159.9 pounds and below and and took first place on points. The effort gave him a big ol' gold belt, he said. He also entered the men's advanced 159.9-pounds and under category, but got triangled, he said.

In Walizer's pro fight in New Jersey in September, he also got caught in a triangle, but was able to eventually work free of it. He joked that if he gets caught with a few more of them, he might end up figuring out how to avoid getting caught with it.

Chris Albright, a Red Lion senior who is coached by Walizer on the high school varsity wrestling team, went 1-1, earning him a third place in the beginner men's no-gi flyweight 130-139.9 pounds category.

Matt Graham, a former wrestler at Red Lion who now attends Millersville University, went 3-0 at the event, earning him a first place in the beginner men's no-gi welterweight 160-169.9 pounds category.

Here's a news release sent to me by Mark Jovich, who coaches a team of Mixed Martial Arts fighters who train at his New Cumberland school, Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy. Eight of the team's fighters competed in the Warrior Challenge's MMA Championships on Saturday Nov 10th in East Durham, NY:

The event was held Saturday Nov 10th at the Blackthorne Resort, East Durham, NY. The event matched 4 MMA fighters at each weight class to give each fighter a chance to compete twice. The Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy had 8 fighters entered this tournament. Seven of the eight CPMA fighters made it to the championship round.

Chad Strawbridge 195lbs Lost by KO in the 1st round in a fight that both fighters were delivering massive shots to the head.

Mark Jovich, coach at the Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland, sent me this news release on an upcoming amateur MMA event on November 10th in East Durham, NY. Jovich is bringing eight CPMA team members there.

Each fighter will be in a 4-man tournament for their respective weight class and will have two fights. If they win the first, they advance to the finals. If they lose the first, they fight again for either 3rd or 4th place, Jovich said.

A new MMA/BJJ school is slated to open March 1st, 2008, where Brad Souders and George McGinnis will be head instructors. Souders and McGinnis will teach an MMA class (striking, clinch, takedowns, and no-gi grappling) as well as a gi BJJ class.

Here's something from Todd Reid, who has trained with Souders: "The best thing about Brad opening the school in York, aside from his estimable skills in both MMA and BJJ, is that he is truly one of the nicest, most humble guys I've ever trained with. He's not cocky at all and he just loves to train with whoever is into it. He's going to be a great asset for MMA/BJJ in York and I'm really excited that he's going to be running the school."

The school's initial location will be at Gold's Gym North on North George Street in Manchester Township, where McGinnis has led BJJ classes for several years.

I'll keep everyone posted with more details as I get them.

Lightweight fighter Biff Walizer, who fought professionally in September in New Jersey, has more fights planned for the future, and a sponsor to boot.

Jerod Phillips of York County said he recently started an MMA clothing line called "Pimp My Triangle." He will also have the "Tap Or Sleep" on some of the clothes, which include shirts, hoodies, and beanies.

An MMA fan from way back, Phillips said he left his job doing heating and air conditioning to go full-time with his MMA clothing company.

Phillips also said Thursday he and Walizer have agreed to start a York County-based MMA fight team, which will be called "Team Tap Or Sleep."

"It's just going to start small with Biff and then I'll build from there," Phillips said.

Although he's waiting for the credit card system to be up and running to begin selling his clothing, Phillips has already set up a Web site, so you can go here to take a look at some of the designs.

Here's an e-mail I received Saturday from Biff Walizer about this weekend's Garden State Grappling Championships tournament in Millville, NJ:

After losing a very close bout, George McGinnis brought a silver medal back to York from
the 170-184.9 weight class. Brett Myers won a gold medal in the 155-169.9 weight class. One of Brett's 2 wins on the day included a sweet submission victory with a triangle choke. I was able to win a gold medal in the 140-154.9 weight class. I went 3-0 on the day with one submission and two decisions. George and Brett both train in jiu-jitsu at Gold's Gym North.

York County fighters Mike "Dickie" Oberdick said both he and Adam King won in their fights at an amateur event called Cage of Vengeance in New Jersey on Saturday. It was the first official bout for both fighters.

In Oberdick's case, his fight lasted less than a minute.

"It turned out pretty well," he said. "It was a first round TKO in about 40 seconds."

Oberdick, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, was matched up against a striker in Angel Rivera Ortiz in the 210-249.9 weight class.

One challenge was that Oberdick only weighed in at 208 pounds "with street clothes on," he said, whereas Ortiz was about 220 pounds.

Oberdick said he started the fight off throwing a couple combos to get Ortiz backing up and confused, then clinched him against the fence. From there, Oberdick went for the take down.

On the ground, Oberdick tried to take Ortiz's back, but the Team Neglia member rolled onto his back. It didn't matter to Oberdick; instead of a rear naked choke, he went for a head and arm triangle to get the win.

Oberdick, 33, of York, works nights at a city bar, which leaves his afternoons free for training, he said. He trains with King and others, like Biff Walizer, at a private training club in York.

He plans to fight for Cage of Vengeance again, hopefully at a lower weight class, maybe the 195-209.9 division.

"We'll play it by ear," he said.

Two York County fighters, Mike Oberdick and Adam King, will be fighting this weekend at Cage of Vengeance, an amateur MMA event in New Jersey.

Windsor Township's Biff Walizer sent me an e-mail on his fight last weekend in New Jersey at the Ring of Combat's Beasts of the Northeast 8-man lightweight tournament.
He was fighting Eddie Fyvie, a Renzo Gracie fighter with a 3-1 professional record. Here's what Biff wrote:

I got to a clinch and backed him into a corner. He was a lot taller than me, so I proceeded to land some knees to his upper thighs and a couple of short right hands in the corner.

When I went to adjust my clinch he turned his back to the center of the ring and immediately fell to his back pulling me into his guard and a very tight triangle.

I fought the triangle and in the process of escaping my mouthpiece fell out. So after clearing the triangle, they restarted us on our feet. I was still feeling the effects of the triangle at the restart as I walked into a right hand that put me down with 16 seconds left in the round. "match over"

Biff injured his hand in training just weeks before the fight. Here's what he wrote about that:

I finally went and got my hand x-rayed on Monday. It's broken in 2 places. It's started to heal since it's been 3 weeks ago now. It isn't set perfectly but they said it would be pretty complicated to go in and reset the spiral break in the middle of my hand. So, I just can't hit anything with it for a few weeks. I've already started looking for my next fight. (hopefully at 145)

Here's a news release I just received from Mark Jovich. Congrats to all of the CPMA fighters, and to everyone who competed in Fall Brawl.

The Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy has a weekend of strong performances and little mistakes at Empire State Warrior Challenge “Fall Brawl” going 3 for 6 in MMA Fights.

The Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy competed in a MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) event on Saturday, September 8th. The event was the Empire State Warrior Challenge “Fall Brawl” held in East Durham, NY.

The evening started with CPMA fighter John Andell of Red Lion, PA winning his debut bout with a rear naked choke in the second round over Josh Click. Andell then took a second demonstration fight later in the evening with Jeremy Springer. The CPMA fighter submitted Springer in the second round with an arm bar from the mounted position.

The second CPMA fighter to enter the ring was Brent Kroh of Dallastown, PA. Brent lost a split decision to Carlos Morales. Brent controlled the majority of the 1st round taking Morales takedown then mounting him. Brent then applied arm triangle choke. Morales fought off the arm triangle choke to end the round. The second round was a combination of takedowns by Kroh and sweeps by Morales. The 3rd and final round was exciting with both fighters trying to impose their will, Kroh attempting takedowns and Morales avoiding and striking with hands and feet.
