Here's an email from Larry Novak, owner of Tattoo Fightwear, a New Cumberland-based mma clothing company:

Tattoo Fightwear is sponsoring James "Shrapnel" Chappell, here are a few of his stats:
-Green Belt USMC Martial Arts

-Blue Belt BJJ
-1yr. Boxing/Muy Thai
-Competed in NAGA, UGC and took a gold medal at the PA.State BJJ Tournament
-Ammy record: 3-0
-Light weight title holder for the Central PA. Warrior Challenge.

Ted's Take: Jimmy's won all of his fights by armbar - which, don't get me wrong, is a great thing - but I can't wait to see it when he lets his hands go.

ACA seminar on Sat. - BJJ black belt Daniel Tavares

| | Comments (0)

Daniel Tavares

York's Academy of Combative Arts, a full-service MMA school featuring BJJ black belt Daniel Beleza and Muay Thai instructor Kham Ngondara, is holding a seminar tomorrow (Sat.) at 10 a.m. at their location, 53 E. North St., in the same building as the Greyhound bus station. Cost of the seminar, which should last between 1 1/2 to 2 hours, is $60.

The seminar features Daniel Tavares, a BJJ black belt and NAGA champion. Tavares is a close friend and training partner of Beleza. "He's an incredible BJJ practitioner and instructor," said ACA co-owner Joe Duffey.

In addition, because Tavares, who is 5'10" and about 165, is a bit bigger than Beleza, he brings a different perspective to the table, especially for anyone who has trained with Beleza, Duffey said.

Phoenix Rising in York County, PA

| | Comments (0)

phoenix.jpg

I tell ya, man, it's great to see martial artists in York County and the surrounding area getting together, training and learning from each other. My co-worker Tom Joyce, whose taken a great deal of martial arts over the years, always recalls the squabbling he used to witness and hear about between schools and martial arts masters. It makes you wonder why petty differences couldn't be put aside for the greater good.

When you think about it, we're really all here for the same purpose - to squeeze as much knowledge and experience as we can out of this thing we can life, by way of the martial arts. And with all of the videos and other information out there, are there really any secrets anymore?

George "Phoenix" McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion has been at the vanguard of the MMA cross-pollination in York County and beyond, and a recent facebook post by him illustrates this:

"Had a good work out last night. Hit up Blackman's MMA (in Harrisburg) for some mat time with their fighters and then bounced on over to Jay's (Haas' academy in Lewisberry) to work in with their wrestling team. The beauty behind association and comraderie is that everyone generally wins. Hell, just last night I noticed 2 - 3 wrestling techniques at Jay's that I am going to start drilling as early as today to incorporate into my own game..."

As a source of inspiration, I also asked George about how he got his nickname:

"It was decided upon by a couple of friends a good ways back due to my uncanny ability to bounce back from any bad situation. Example: I would be in a match where I was down numerous points and unlikely to recover, and then out of no where I would spark enough energy or motion to escape / reverse the position and or submit my opponent from an unlikely angle."

"An example of how it applies to me off the mat is again my ability to bounce back from a bad situation, or what I often refer to as 'rock bottom'. I have hit rock bottom a handful of times in my life. I have made mistakes that have cost me dearly. I have said and done things that I was certain I would never be able to redeem, but like the Phoenix, its old physical form perishes in the ashes of its self-made pyre and a new emerges stronger and healthier then ever. To me, the Phoenix represents redemption, a fresh start and perhaps a new lease on life..."

Philly's UFC 101 gate: $3.55 mil

| | Comments (0)

Bloodyelbow has a post today about Randy Gordon, a former New York State Athletic Commissioner writing an op-ed piece in one of the NY papers, in support of the sport he once banned, (based on the "new" rules). But in his opinion piece, he has this interesting nugget from UFC 101, held in Philadelphia:

"I got an upclose and personal view of just how popular the sport has become when I went to UFC 101 at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center in August. The event brought in a $3.55 million gate, more than any boxing or combat event ever held in Pennsylvania. The sellout crowd of 15,007 poured into the city early and stayed late, making purchases at arena concessions, staying in hotels, dining at restaurants and taking taxis around the city." (emphasis mine).

Not too shabby, I say. The PA state Athletic Commission recieves no money from the state budget, but does get 5 percent of all gate receipts, so that's anice chunk of change that will go a long way in sustaining the agency that regulates the sport in PA.

Scranton Times-Tribune: Hettes is a rock star

| | Comments (0)

hettesrockstar.jpg

Jim Hettes is a 22-year-old who looks like he's 16, a professional who starts his day with a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. A 140-pound man who doesn't even bother to tell anyone what he really does for a living.

He has learned a lot these last few years. One thing he has picked up is, it's not worth trying to get anyone to look past what seems obvious.

"I tell them I'm self-employed," Hettes said. "I don't tell them I'm an MMA fighter.

"Usually, when you tell them you're an MMA fighter, they look at you a little different. Some people understand it. Some people think you're just a thug or something. Half the people think I'm B.S.-ing them anyway."

Actually, far from it.

An open offer to the MMA community from George McGinnis

| | Comments (0)

Students, family and friends:

This has been in the works for some time, but due to our schedule and several others events, this particular event was put on hold. I would now like to bring it back to light and out in the open for those both previously involved and potentially involved with the project in the near future.

What's going on? Well, it has always been a goal of mine to set some sort of record. Why not do it within the realm of what I truly love? Martial Arts. Due to confidential reasons, I cannot (at this time) go into dramatic detail about the event, but what I can tell you is as follows...

Where: Location: West Manchester Mall (pending) - adjacent to Elicker's Kenpo Karate
When: A Saturday to be later determined (12:00pm - 2:00pm) 1/2 hour Uke registration, 1 hour record attempt, 1/2 hour awards and appreciation
Who: Coach George McGinnis, Team YMMAA and dozens of other schools and participants
What: Coach George McGinnis to set the first Judo based world record in the history of 'Guinness Books'
How: One Tori (person performing throwing techniques), countless Uke's (person receiving the technique), 1 hour time limit, mats, sponsors, media, crowd, friends and family and good old fashioned camaraderie as it was meant to be.

This event is going to be awesome. Its purpose is to obviously not only bring some advertising to our academy, but much more importantly, it is an opportunity to give back to the community and our instructors. Martial Arts has saved my life and I wish to share its beauty and culture. Judo is highly effective and functional yet so many people dismiss it from their training and arsenal. This will also give us (schools and club owners) a chance to work together and expose our students to an atmosphere that isn't primarily based on competition.

WHO'S IN???!!!

I will need to know the following...

(A) Would you like to attend and or participate in the event?
(B) Would you like to be listed as an Uke (oh yes, you will be thrown), or as a helper (event support / assistant)? If you are a YMMAA member, don't even think about option 2 of (B), ha ha...
(C) School owners - Can you attend the event and bring students to participate?
(D) This is a great sponsorship opportunity as well. If you are a business owner or know someone who is, this is a cheap and easy way to get involved with the MMA community while supporting an event that will not only make the books but will have a decent amount of media.

(E) There will be prizes at the event. One -->lucky<-- participant will receive a high end Gi (company pending) during a raffle towards the end of the event. Each Uke participant will receive a (ticket) upon completing their registration form. A number will be called, if its yours, you win!

More details to come soon. Please contact me with feed back, questions, concerns, interests, suggestions, etc. Thanks for your time...

Sincerely: Coach George McGinnis

George McGinnis weighs in on PA Fighting Championship

| | Comments (0)

PFC.jpg

George McGinnis, owner and head trainer at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, sent me this email on his impressions of Friday's event in Harrisburg:

"I would like to congratulate Coach Blackman and all those involved in a successful evening. There is no doubt that his personal involvement in the entertainment business is what assisted him in running an impressive show. Steve Blackman took the appropriate amount of time to converse with the trainers and was extremely composed during the event which was a refreshing change of pace. I was impressed with the easy to find location, the venue itself, as well as the talent pool in both the amateur and pro divisions. I do believe that we will be looking to work with Mr. Blackman in the future"...

PA Fighting Championship results (some)

| | Comments (0)

Actual_poster.jpg

Just talked with Jerod Phillips of mma fightwear company Tap or Sleep. He was at PA Fighting Championship last night in Harrisburg and passed along a few of the results:

Jay Haas of Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts (and his own school in Lewisberry) got a TKO win against Michael Bunyamanhop. Jay had Bunyamanhop mounted and was raining down punches, Jerod said.

Another Hanover fighter, Kevin Flinchbaugh, also scored a first-round TKO, this one on the feet, at about :38, against Joshua Geiringer.

Hanover's third fighter, Brad Herrick, lost by KO to Justin Lucas.

Jeff Smith, who used to train at Hanover, but now calls Blackman MMA home, won by guillotine against Ric Humphries in the first round.

And in the main event, Dustin Pague of Blackman MMA lost to Anthony Leone by a north-south choke in the second round.

Jerod said the place, the Zembo Temple, was packed, sold out and there was not a bad seat in the house. "It was a pretty well run thing," he said of promoter Steve Blackman and his crew. "It was a decent night of fights."

Many thanks to Jerod for these results. Complete results should be ready by early next week.

To start the night off John Andel won the title in his weight class by dominating his opponent on the ground for three rounds to win by decision. In the next fight Jeff Runk won a spirited contest showing great sportsmanship and getting a unanimous decision on the judges cards.

Duane Bastress stepped into the cage next looking like a beast and basically had his way with his opponent and winning by ref stoppage in the second round. Knockout of the night came via Tattoo Fightwear sponsored fighter Chad Hoar. After dominating the first two rounds on his feet and the ground Chad saw an opening in the third and hammered his opponent with a devastating right hand to knockout his competition.

Rocco MMA - change in submission grappling classes

| | Comments (0)

roccomma2.jpg

I am sending out this email to let everyone know that we are changing the schedule to accommodate more time for the Submission Grappling classes. The Submission Grappling classes during the day will start at 12:20 and will end when we are done. I am not putting a time restraint on our class anymore.

For those of you that come in for the Boxing or MMA class during the day, it will begin when we are done Submission Grappling. Assume it will begin around 2:00. If we aren't finished by then, just hit the bag, stretch and warm up.

The Submission Grappling classes in the evening will be extended by a half hour. Monday and Wednesday the class will be from 6:00 to 7:30, and from 7:00 to 8:30 on Tuesday. The classes that follow will stay the same. They will just be starting a half hour later than usual.

We are also going to be stricter with the class as well. You must come on time or you will have to do a separate warm up in the cage before you can join the class. In class I will go over the new format in greater detail. I am changing the format in the hopes of getting our grappling to all new heights. I hope to see you all in class soon.

Thanks,

ACA's open house a success

| | Comments (0)

joefrank.jpg

I went over to the Academy of Combative Arts in York today for their open house, and had a great time. The academy, located in the Greyhound Bus Station, is home to many MMA fighters, as well as others who are interested in getting (or keeping) in shape or learning self-defense.

Unfortunately, I was late in getting there, so I missed the exhibition that owners Joe Duffey and Frank Nguyen had planned. But I have to say, everyone was accomodating in doing it again, just so I could get a little footage, which will be edited and put up here sometime soon.

In addition to Joe and Frank, head BJJ instructor Daniel Beleza was there, as well as Muay Thai instructor Kham and a guy he's been training with for a couple years now, Kaensak Sor. Pleonjit. Kaensak, who now trains in New Jersey, was champion at both Lumpinee and Ratchadamnoen stadiums, which I'm told are the two biggest and most prestigious stadiums in Thailand. He was in York for a seminar at ACA in August and hopes to do it again soon.

Frank Danko: There is no way he is going to get on the PPV cards right away.
He needs another 3 fights!

Just a reminder that York's Academy of Combative Arts, 53 E. North St., York -- in the same building as the Greyhound bus station -- is having an Open House Party Sunday Nov 1st from noon to 4.

I'm kind of guessing, but I feel pretty certain that co-owners Joe Duffey and Frank Nguyen will be there, along with Beleza. I know they have a couple of striking coaches, so you might see those guys as well. Maybe even some of the academy's fight team, or other members. Also, there will probably be some light refreshments, although Frank said don't expect any sushi (he also runs Keo Asian Grill and Sushi Restaurant downtown).

CPWC - It Doesn't Get Better Than This

| | Comments (0)

I wanted to get down some of my impression of the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III, held last Friday in Lancaster, so here goes ...

I've known promoter Mark Jovich for about 2 1/2 years, pretty much ever since I started this blog. The man is top-notch - a Marine for more than a quarter-century, former military instructor at Dallastown High School, father, husband and of course, martial arts master at Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland.

Mark's no fly-by-nighter, no "one-and-done" promoter; he's here to stay and to build on what he has constructed so far: quality events, the most bang for the buck, while gving young fighters the chance to realize their dreams.

Jim Hettes: PUTTING IN WORK

| | Comments (0)

from an exclusive interview with mmamelee.com, one of the best mma social networking sites:

It's been 4 months since Jim Hettes turned Pro and to say this guy takes his career serious would be an understatement. In that short time "Kid Havoc" assembled a 2-0 record and plans on capturing another victory Saturday night in what will be a historical event in Maryland, then he's scheduled to perform again in front of his hometown crowd November 27th. If you average that out, he's fighting every 6 weeks, still somehow he found time to win 2 Gold Medals in Judo at the Keystone State Games and donate his bones to Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in preparation for his title fight. We sat down with Hettes to discuss his brutal schedule and find out what's in store for Saturday night.

MMA MELEE - Man you've been going hard the last couple months, what motivated you to start competing in MMA and how do you keep up with this pace?

JIM HETTES - I have always been into Martial Arts ever since I was a kid, from watching way to many kung fu flicks, to trying to throw a hoduken in my backyard. I wrestled as a kid, switched over to boxing at age 14, then two years later I started doing jiu jitsu, so it only seemed natural for me to follow the path into Mixed Martial Arts as I got older. As far as the pace, I just enjoy seeing my game get better and better and I love displaying the results. (***Hadouken-Japanese neologism literally "wave motion fist" a punch delivered with a blast of spiritual energy)

Jim "Kid Havoc" Hettes wins at Shogun Fights

An entry at mmamelee.com from MMAtrix: JHET WON 135 into the FIRST ROUND by ARMBAR!!!!!!!!!!

Jim Hettes is turning into one of Pennsylvania's best home-grown fighters. Hailing from the Scranton area and training at Gracie NEPA, I'm predicting great things for the guy some call J-Het and others know as Kid Havoc. Hettes fought on Saturday in Maryland's first MMA event, Shogun Fights, put on by John Rallo of Baltimore's Ground Control.

Beyond pumped for CPWC III

| | Comments (0)

CPWC3poster.jpg

What can I say, I am BEYOND PUMPED for this event. Tom Joyce, my esteemed colleague, and I are heading out to CPWC III tomorrow afternoon and plan to do two segments: an interview compilation and also a highlights package.

Mixedmartialarts.com has the event listed with 17 fights, but absent is Lewis "The Beast" Rumsey, who was set to make his pro debut, although at as of last night, didn't have an opponent.

Still, we're in for a helluva night. Two big experienced heavyweights, Randy Smith and Braden Bice, have already fought once, with Bice KO'ing Smith in their first meeting.

York pros Biff Walizer and Jay Haas are both fighting on the card and Justin "Skiz" Scott, a guy I've compare to a buzzsaw when I saw him throwing high kicks, makes his pro debut. Watch this guy, trust me.

Eric Steppe, another exciting fighter who's won two fights in the first two CPWCs, is on the card. Don't blink, it could be over that quick.

York Academy of Mixed Martial Arts' Brett Myers is fighting Justin Krebs for the 170-pound title.

Joe Duffey, co-owner of the Acdemy of Combative Arts in York, makes his amateur debut. Go get 'em, Joe.

James "Shrapnel" Chappell fights as well. Jimmy has wicked fast subs, as does Mike Oberdick.

Let's not forget Duane Bastress, a 3-0 amateur with a distinguished collegiate wrestling pedigree, who is fighting at 185. York fighter John Andel is also 3-0, definitely adding to the event's name, "Night of the Unbeatens."

Heavyweight champ Jon Tuxford is set to fight. I wonder if he'll let Mike Stoltzfus pound on his midsection the way he did Adam Hostetter at CPWC II. Hostetter's hard shots seemed to have no effect on Tuxford.

ACA's Josh Kessler, who is built like a tank, is fighting Robert Haley

"The Beast" looking for an opponent for CPWC III

Lewis "The Beast" Rumsey, set to make his pro debut at Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III this Friday, just put out a message on mmamelee:
"Dnt kno if i got an oppenent yet."
Say tuned.

skiz.jpg

MMA social netowkring site Mmamelee.com has a great interview with York County fighter Justin Scott:

Justin "Skiz" Scott, an amazing talent just 20 years of age is making his pro-debut this Friday night at the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III. Justin is a member of team M.A.C.E training out of Central Pennsylvania Mixed Martial Arts Academy who along with teammates Chad Strawbridge and Duane Bastress have been dominating MMA events in PA ever since it became legal. MMA MELEE sat down with Justin to congratulate him and discuss the path MMA has led him down.

MMA MELEE- Congratulation on your successful MMA career. When most 20 year olds are out partying and barely even pondering their future, you work a full-time job and now you're turning pro in the most vigorous sport on the planet, how do you manage to stay focused and keep moving forward?

JUSTIN- Staying focused isn't hard for me these days. My first MMA fight was when I was 18, right away I understood the dedication needed to excel in this sport so I started making sacrifices then. I do miss hanging out with my friends but I don't think I'm missing out on life, MMA has helped me grow up faster. I stay focused by accepting any challenges the world throws my way and then I set goals for myself. I enjoy what I do everyday and I have a good team behind me, I wouldn't have it any other way honestly.

The Spaniard improves to 10-1

| | Comments (0)

A little training video/interview from the Pocono Record.

Got an email from Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep, who told me about Pennsylvania welterweight Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman's fight last week at Valley Fight League in Altoona: "Charlie won by tko first round. Heavy elbows and then quick punches. So its onward and upward for the spaniard." That improves Charlie's record to 10-1. Charlie is a Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter.

Found this video of Joe Fye, who trains at Gracie NEPA in Scranton with Jim Hettes, and goes by the name "Stranglehold" on mmamelee. Fight took place on June 12 at Cage Fight against Sean Haines. The fight is listed as a TKO, but I would call that a straight-up KO. Haines was flat on the canvas and the doctor had to run in and check him. That's a KO in my book. Nice hands, Mr. Fye.

Update from Hanover Academy of MMA's Bob Bitner

| | Comments (0)

Hanover_Academy.jpg
Here's a message Bob, who runs Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts, sent me today:
I'm down to two fighting on Saturday at Gladiator, Ryan Harder injured his neck and had to pull out of the event. Nate Kinard and Mike Fallia both at 155 will be fighting for us. After that I have Jay Haas fighting at the Warrior Challenge on the 23rd. The Grappling Challenge on the 24th, I'm not sure how many from Hanover will be competing but there's bound to be some black t-shirts there representing.

After that it looks like Nov 6 at Steve Blackman's event in Harrisburg. Matt Loban at 205, Brad Herrick at 170 and Kevin Flinchbaugh at 145 should represent us well at that event. Also in the works is Nov 27, Pa.Cage Fight 2 in Scranton, should be Jay Haas at that one if all goes well. I'll keep you posted as more develops, we are always fighting somewhere. If we not fighting that gives the dust time to settle in here, and I hate dust.

McGinnis takes two golds, two belts at UGC

Here's George McGinnis's U.G.C. results from "Best of the Best" held this past weekend in Macungie, Pa:

Match 1: No Gi Intermediate / Advanced Mixed (win via. points) - Gold
Match 2: No Gi Intermediate / Advanced Mixed (win via. rear naked choke) - Gold
Match 3: No Gi Absolute 200lb. and under (win via. triangle to inverted arm bar)
Match 4: No Gi Absolute 200lb. and over (win via. points)
Match 5: No Gi Absolute 200lb. and over [finals] - (win via. triangle) - Championship Belt
Match 6: No Gi Absolute 200lb. and under [semi finals] - (win via. triangle)
Match 7: No Gi Absolute 200lb. and under [finals] - (win via. triangle / descending arm bar) - Championship Belt

"Yeah, its safe to say that the triangle is working for me. I think between my recent diet adjustments and conditioning programs, that my performance is steadily increasing. Its a small sacrifice to pay when considering the results. The U.G.C president (Robson Pereira) has approached me and offered me a super fight at one of the up coming events. I'd like to take a moment to thank all of our sponsors..."

KING KONG Anspach wins pro debut

| | Comments (0)

kingkong.jpg

ALTOONA, PA - 10/11/2009 - This past Sunday night at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona, PA, in front of a rowdy Penn State cheering section, heavyweight Aaron "King Kong" Anspach (1-0) dominated James Armstrong (4-3). In one of the most exciting fights of the evening, KONG stopped Armstrong by TKO in the 2nd Round. Anspach used a series of overpowering double legs, one of which broke the lights on the cage, to bring the crowd to its feet and show everyone the explosive athleticism that he brings to every fight.

"I had a lot of fun and it was cool to hear all the guys cheering for me. I get a huge rush just taking someone up in the air and driving them into the cage. I got hit a couple of times and it shook me a little bit, but I have been hit harder than that in other events and I know it will take a lot to stop me."
-Aaron Anspach

In other action Sunday night, LionHeart Fighter Lou Armezzani had to injury default in the 1st round when he dislocated his shoulder and was forced to stop.

RIE - second show in Philly report

| | Comments (0)

Respect Is Earned's Philly Biker Brawl happened last night in Oaks, Pa. A while back I reported that Sunbury, Pa.'s Tim Boetsch would be fighting another UFC alum, Alex Schonauer. Well, Boetsch's opponent was apparently chnaged to a guy named Lorenzo Hood. Then, for some reason, the fight was scrapped altogether. There were seven fights that night, with Leo Pecanha winning by RNC against Aaron Meisner in the main event. Here's some activity from RIE's facebook page:

RIE: "Once the video gets through post production editing, we'll have the entire event for sale to watch online r buy a DVD. Also, individual fights may be purchased for a pricereduced from that of the entire event."

RIE: "I'll keep everyone updates on our video status. Keep an eye out for RIE's coverage on HDNet's "Inside MMA" as well."

RIE: ""Bust a move" just started playing on the radio. Thought it was appropiate considering I'm still on the road w/Philly Biker Brawl main event winner, Leo Pecanha. He def busted a few moves in his 1st round win over Ultimate Fighter Aaron Meisner."

Lisa Gartner Stott: "They (her family) liked the fact that the fighters were approachable and talked with them!! Signed autographs and took pix. All the boys do martial arts and wrestling, so they were pretty much meeting some heroes!"

Just a reminder about this event. I blogged about it recently, after having spoken with one of the promoters. The bottom line is this - a lot of guys on the Internet are complaining about the name and concept of the event, but when you get down to it, these are fights sanctioned by the state, so everything should be above-board and professional. A fight is a fight, as Royce Gracie said. Check back here next week for results.

I was on mmamelee, an MMA social networking site, and got onto Larry Novak's Tattoo Fightwear page. Larry recently made a post about the upcoming Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III, of which he is a sponsor. Here's some interesting info:

I talked with Mark Jovich, owner and matchmaker of the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge. With two successful events in York Township at Wisehaven Banquet Hall, Jovich moved his end of the year show to a bigger venue, the Lancaster Convention Center. Mark said at this point, things are going well for the Oct. 23 event, ticket sales are brisk, and the card is complete. We've got a lot of local, exciting fighters on the card, so it no doubt will be a great show. Looks like 19 fights, including the return of local pro Biff Walizer. Paul Bradley Improves to 12-1 with Win at Strikeforce

| | Comments (0)

Email from LionHeart management, about Bradley, who used to train and live in State College:
Paul Bradley (12-1) showcased his impressive stand up and well rounded fight game this past Friday night at the Strikeforce Challenger Fights in Tulsa, Oklahoma by dominating Levi Avera (12-5). Bradley, who improved his record to 12-1, won by a unanimous decision over Avera with all 3 judges scoring the fight 30-27.

"I was pleased with the win Friday night and felt like I was able to dominate the fight no matter where it went. I am going to go back to the gym Monday and continue training full time to move closer to a Strikeforce title. Fighting in a great organization like Strikeforce was awesome and it feels great to be a part of such an impressive fight league. I am looking forward to fighting for them as soon as possible."

We would like to thank the sponsors listed in the column on the left that have generously helped Paul during his training camp.

And special thanks to Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts and Greg Nelson for helping Paul get ready for this fight.

Thanks to mmajunkie.com for the play-by-play:

LEVI AVERA VS. PAUL BRADLEY

Round 1 - Quick touch of gloves. Bradley scores a quick jab, then shucks off Avera's advance, tossing him to the side and falling into top position. Avera settles into half-guard underneath, and he looks to use his long legs to attack. Avera gains full guard as Bradley lands a few shots from top position. Avera ties up the arms, and Bradley tries to posture up. Bradley pulls his left leg through to half-mount. Avera tries to look to his right for a potential kimura, but instead settles for establishing full guard. Two minutes remain in the round. Bradley delivers a few shots to the ribs. Slow action, and the referee brings it back to the feet. Avera fakes a right kick and lands a left kick to the body. Avera grabs a single leg, but he has to let it go. Bradley works in a few quick hands, and Avera tries to answer. Bradley shoots in and powers him to the floor. Bradley drags his opponent to the cage as time expires, and he secures the opening round on the MMAjunkie.com card, 10-9.

Reading MMA: 9th Street Slaughter postponed

| | Comments (0)

9thstslaughter.jpg

Just talked with Greg Sirb, executive director of the Pa. State Athletic Commission. He confirmed that tonight's 9th Street Slaughter event at Club 1402 in Reading has been postponed. The event was being promoted by longtime boxing promoter Marshall Kauffman, with MMAinPA.com's Joe Cunliffe doing the matchmaking.

"Just didn't get enough bouts together," was what Sirb said when I asked why the event wasn't happening.

Although I don't believe there is a minimum number of bouts per event required in PA., I know each event in the state has to have at least two professional fights and the rest can be amateur. So far this year, I don't think there's been an event this year with less than maybe eight fights, although I think that was due to a couple of them being canceled at the last minute.

Sirb said that Kauffman had told him he wanted to hold the event in Reading the first weekend in December.

Kauffman was "disappointed" at the show's postponement. "He's never really canceled anything" in his long career as a promoter, Sirb said.

Previously, Kauffman and Cunliffe collaborated on the May 30 hybrid boxing/MMA event in Reading, Pain on Penn Street.

Brett Myers and Jay Haas training the MT clinch

| | Comments (0)

clinch2.jpg
George McGinnis, head trainer at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion, sent me this pic of his brother, Brett Myers, facing camera, training with Jay Haas. In the photo, Brett has the Muay Thai clinch on Jay, meanwhile Jay is swimming his right hand inside to try to counter with a clinch of his own (I'm guessing).

Myers trains at YMMAA and Jay trains at Hanover Academy of MMA, but both schools often train together. Both Brett and Jay are on the card at Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge in Lancaster on Oct. 23. Jay has a pro fight against Sean Santella and Brett has a title fight - I believe it is the 170-pound championship - against Justin Krebs.

Casey Bush - whose video is featured to the right in the video player---> won his amateur debut at Barbarian Fight Club - Dire Conflict over the weekend in Virginia. Bush's coach at Hanover Academy of MMA, Bob Bitner, had this to say about the victory:

"He went in for the take-down, his first take-down, he ended up getting popped. But he re-grouped and scored a take-down on his second attempt."

On the ground, Bush tried a few submissions, but his opponent, Joey Elmore, fought them off, Bitner said.

"In the long run, Casey just proved to be a little too strong," Bitner said. "He ended up getting the mount and after that, it was just ground-n-pound, ref stoppage, TKO. For his first fight, he did real good. He learned a good lesson here on that first shot. He went in there with a little bit of that wrestler mindset and kind of got reminded real quick they're throwing punches here."

"Overall, I was pleased with the performance. He was thorough with what he did, he was careful woth what he did, once he re-grouped and got that second shot in."

Still waiting for results from PA fights ...

There were two MMA events that PA fights fans would probably be interested in - myself included - and I've been trying to get results, so far to no avail. One was Friday's Downtown Beatdown 2 in Erie at the Avalon Hotel; the other was Saturday night's Barbarian Fight Club in Virginia, which featured four PA fighters. The only thing I can say is stay tuned, as soon as I know, you'll know.

Here it is. Mark Jovich is putting on Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge 3 at the Lancaster Convention Center on Oct. 23. Click here for tickets and click here to see the fight card.

A couple months ago, I blogged about a promotion that was planning an MMA event in Reading called "Crime and Punishment: Cops vs. Cons" and said I would reserve my judgment until after I spoke with its promoters, Ryan Kerwin and Raymond Gokool. Well, I spoke with Kerwin earlier tonight.

My first stop, however, was a call to Greg Sirb, executive director for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission on Wednesday.

I asked Sirb what he thought of the event, was it going to be real cops taking on real cons inside a cage?

"That's just blowing smoke up your ass," he said. Sirb said that "not even one" of the fighters on the card is a real cop or real con. "It's marketing. There's no cops, there's no convicts. I have the freakin' line-up. Do you think I would let that go on?"

My next call, today, was to Kerwin, who said that yes, the title of the event is a bit of marketing to set himself apart from the other MMA events popping up all over the state. But contrary to what Sirb said, the fighters - at least those on the main card - are all cops or cons. "This isn't a joke," he said.

Middleweight bouts
Cop - Lamont Lister
vs
Con - Matt Masterson

Cop - Taylor Sensabaugh
vs
Con - John Bryant

Welterweight bouts
Cop - Chris Kennedy
vs
Con - Marcus Ajian

Lightweight bouts
Cop - Brian Smiley
vs
Con - Shannon Green

Featherweight bouts
Cop - Johnny Torres
vs
Con - Gabriel Greenberg

Eric Moore - The Cinderella Story

| | Comments (0)

Fight for your mind from tap or sleep on Vimeo.

This past weekend, Eric Moore, of Hanover Academy of MMA, entered the cage at Legend Cage Fighting in Manassas, Va. for his debut fight. He ended up in the main event, with fight of the night honors, and a title. How'd it happen?

According to Bob Bitner, Hanover's coach, "Believe me, it shocked us just as much as anybody." Prior to the fight, they went through two opponents - the second pulling out at weigh-ins. Legend's 155-pound champion, Jason Valle, also had an opponent pull out.

Despite Moore's inexperience - and based on Hanover's reputation of producing top-notch fighters - the promoter asked Bitner if Moore wanted the title fight.

"After probably five seconds of thinking about it," Moore and Bitner "jumped at the chance," Bitner said.

After three five-minute rounds, Moore was declared the winner by unanimous decision. "He laid it to this kid," Bitner said. "It was 100 percent Eric, all three rounds. We were very, very proud of him."

Not one to sit back on any laurels, Bitner said now it's time to live up to the title. No doubt Moore will do just that.

Reading MMA: Cops vs. Cons on Oct. 3

| | Comments (0)

Yesterday, I made a post on Charlie Brenneman fighting for the VFL's Broad Avenue Brawlers on Oct. 11 in Altoona. Also featured on the poster is former NFL player-turned MMA fighter (and Johnstown, Pa. native) Carlton Haselrig. Haselrig, at 3-2, has fought for the UCFC in Pittsburgh and Iron Will Fighting in Johnstown this year. But, according to sherdog.com, he has to sit out 150 days for missing a fight on Friday:

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Carlton Haselrig, a former Pro Bowl offensive lineman with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was suspended for 150 days by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board after he failed to show up for his Ring of Combat 26 bout with Gian Villante on Friday at the Tropicana Resort and Casino.

According to the NJSACB's Nick Lembo, Haselrig was given a Sept. 9 deadline by which to submit his medical paperwork for the fight. The deadline passed without contact from the 43-year-old or his representatives. Villante went on to knock out Rob Wince, a late replacement, with a head kick 1:25 into the second round.

Hanover's Eric Moore wins amateur debut in Va.

Just heard from Jerod Phillips of mma fightwear company Tap or Sleep. He was in Manassas, Va. to see Hanover Academy of MMA fighter Eric Moore make his amateur debut at Legend Cage Fighting.

Get this - Moore won by unanimous decision, and not only that, but the fight was the main event, a lightweight title fight, and received fight of the night honors. Not bad at all for a first fight.

"It didn't look like his first fight," Phillips said, calling Moore's game a "dominating performance."

Charlie Brenneman to fight for VFL next month

VFL21.jpg

Hollidaysburg, Pa. native Charlie "The Spaniard" Brennman missed his August fight in Amsterdam with M-1 when he re-opened a cut he suffered during his last fight at Iron Will Fighting, said sponsor Jerod Phillips, of Tap or Sleep.

The cut, which required seven stitches to close, will no doubt be healed for Charlie's next fight, his second for Valley Fight League. The Oct. 11 event is called Broad Avenue Brawlers 2 and will be held at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. The event poster, as you can see, has Charlie, who is 8-1, in a title fight (I'm guessing at welterweight), but does not name an opponent.

CPWC III: Walizer vs. Roberts

| | Comments (0)

picresized_1252768426_bifftap.jpg

Windsor pro Biff Walizer has an opponent for the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III: Joel Roberts, 27, is 5'6", 154 pounds and has a 1-1 pro record. Walizer, 34, is the same height, 155 pounds and has a 3-5 pro record.

Biff, for those who don't know, was York County's first MMA pro, is a former collegiate wrestling All-American (at Penn State) and coaches the Red Lion High School varsity wrestling team. He has trained at LionHeart in State College in the past, but I believe now spends most of his time training in York County.

Roberts had a 4-1 (with one no contest) amateur record. As a pro, he beat Scott Bickerstaff by arm bar at King of the Cage: Explosion on 6/15/07. He then lost to Dustin Pague, who also beat Walizer, at Inkosi .... It's Time in Bushkill, Pa., on 7/11/09 by TKO at 3:14 of the 3rd round.

Roberts has another fight scheduled before his bout with Walizer: He's facing Bradley Cook at Crime and Punishment: Cops vs. Cons on Oct. 3 in Reading.

Hanover/TOS fighter Eric Moore to make amateur debut

picresized_1252768157_ericmoore.jpg

Talked to Jerod Phillips with Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep. His latest sponsored fighter, Eric Moore, a relatively new student at Hanover Academy of MMA, will be making his amateur debut tomorrow night at Legend Cage Fighting in Manassas, Va.

Jerod said Moore, who is fighting at 155, started training at Hanover in January. "he picked up a lot since then," Jerod said. "He's got a lot of talent."

Moore, who is 5'10", is facing the 5'11" Cody Baker, who is also making his amateur debut, according to mixedmartialarts.com

RIDDLE.jpg

from mma unlimited and bloodyelbow: TUF contestant and rising UK star Nick Osipczak is all set to face Allentown's Matt Riddle (who now trains at Xtreme Couture) at UFC 105, sources close to the bout have disclosed to MMA Unltd.

Both men have agreed to the bout and, whilst bout agreements haven't been signed, it looks very likely that it will go ahead at the upcoming UFC 105 event in Manchester, England.

Osipczak impressed on The Ultimate Fighter, fighting his way into the house by knocking out Tommy Maguire and then dishing out another KO to American adversary Mark Miller.

He lost on points to finalist DaMarques Johnson but then went on to dispatch the tough Frank Lester by rear naked choke at the finale.

Riddle proved himself capable of delivering the knockouts as well on TUF 7, brutally separating Dan Simmler from his senses, and he has since gone on to post three wins inside the Octagon via unanimous decision.

A good wrestler, he poses a stern test for the Rough House fighter but it looks set to be an interesting contest.

Can Schoenauer take it and then dish it out? Nah, I say The Barbarian skewers him.

As I've blogged about before, Sunbury's Tim "The Barbarian" Boetsch was cut from the UFC (and specifically it's ultra-competitive LHW division) after a 2-2 record there. He's already won a main event bout with King of the Cage and now is scheduled to fight Alex Schoenauer at the upcoming Respect Is Earned event.

How To Select An MMA Academy

| | Comments (0)

mmaschools.jpg

By George McGinnis

Hi. My name is George McGinnis. I wanted to set aside some time today to discuss how to decode various MMA programs and the vital importance in selecting a legitimate Martial Arts / MMA academy that will be handling your educational and competitive needs. First things first. The key word in that sentence was your needs. Countless schools out there (Nationwide) are so concerned with promoting themselves, that they often allow students to attend advanced training before they are ready, or their fighters to take a fight long before they actually have the arsenal to do so. How does this affect you? It's simple. In the world of MMA, first impressions are critical. When a fighter steps through that gate for the first time, they (in my opinion) have to leave a lasting impression with the promoter, fighters, other surrounding teams, as well as the crowd. You have to let people know (win or lose) that you've got game and come from a school that clearly has worked diligently with you and has your best interests in mind. Listed below are some key things that you should be looking for and considering before settling in with any one mixed martial art academy.

Tap or Sleep, the first mma clothing company to come out of York County, offers clothing for the fan and the fighter - both men and women. Phillips sponsors tremendous competitors like Biff Walizer, Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman, Jimmy Hettes and Duane Bastress.

Hanover Academy of MMA made an impact on the MMA scene in Virginia long before Pennsylvania legalized the sport, producing several amateur champions. Bitner, who comes from an extensive striking background, recently partnered with BJJ purple belt George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy to give his fighters a more well-rounded game.

The fights start at 10 p.m., but if I were you, I'd get there early to get a good seat. Jerod said he'll have a table there, selling TOS merch and doing free giveaways. Local fighters will be on hand as well, so get out there and support the sport!

Is Pittsburgh is the birthplace of modern MMA?

| | Comments (0)

Godfather MMA says so. This is an interesting mini-doc about some matches that took place in Pittsburgh in the late 1970s. Some of it looks like a tough-man competition, but there are some amateur wrestling moves, some karate and a few Muay Thai knees thrown in too.

Tom and I talk Strikeforce, New Breed Fighters and we're a little late on Arena Assault, which occurred last night, not tonight as I say in the video. Yes, I'm a dumbass.

The Arena's all right for fighting

This is the inside of The Arena, just imagine there's a cage there instead of a ring.

Jerod said overall, the event was cool, although the fights were reduced from 11 to 7, for unforeseen circumstances. The Arena, Jerod said, is like a big, stuffy, sweaty warehouse. I remember hearing about ECW fans talking about hot it would get in there and what a great experience it was - it seems to add to the gritty, primal nature of fighting, whether it be real or choreographed.

"The crowd was really into it, it was loud," he said.

Jerod also said the main event between Dutin Pague, who beat Biff at the Respect Is Earned event and Jeff Lentz was an all-out war.,

"Dutin got beat up - Lentz is crazy with his strikes, unorthodox," Jerod said. "It was a hell of a fight."

jayhaas.jpg

Talked with Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep fightwear, who attended last night's The Arena Assault at The Arean in Philadelphia. Phillips, who was there to support Hanover Academy of MMA's Jay Haas, said Jay lost in the second round by guillotine.

But, Jerod said it was evident that Jay's ground game had greatly improved.
"He did fine in the first round; he had some big takedowns," Jerod said. "He wrestled good; that's been somehting that had been missing from his game."

In the second round, Jay scored another big takedown, but, unfortunately, "He kind of got himself in a guillotine," Jerod said.

The way I see it, Jay's only gonna get better, and probably quickly. He's been working regularly with BJJ purple belt George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy and Jerod talked about getting Biff Walizer (local York pro and All-American) to train with Jay some more (the two have trained at George's place before).

Just talked with Jerod Phillips, owner of Tap or Sleep fightwear, an MMA clothing company out of Hanover. He's on his way to Philadelphia for Arena Assault 1 to support one of his sponsored fighters, Jay Haas, who fights out of Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts. Jerod said Jay, accompanied by trainer Bob Bitner, weighed in this morning. Jerod's traveling with Ryan Harder, another great fighter out of Hanover, and George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, Jay's BJJ coach, is following them, just to give you the whole scenario.

Best of luck to Jay from MMA Explosion. I'll hopefully have an update on the fight later tonight.

Muay Thai - the art of eight limbs

| | Comments (0)

I had a question the other day from someone in the office about Muay Thai. He had been watching some UFC and heard the term, knew it was a component of MMA, but beyond that, wasn't sure what it was all about. Rather than explain it here for those who don't know, you can head to the extensive wikipedia entry and/or take a look at one of the best ffighters out there today, Buakaw Por. Pramuk:

And for anyone interested in taking a MT seminar from another top fighter - if you missed my post yesterday - look no further than this Sunday at Academy of Combative Arts in York.

Bradley vs. Dante Rivera. Fast-forward to 2:10 for the start of this fight, which is done in about 30 seconds.

LionHeart Professional Management & Promotions is proud to announce that Paul Bradley has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce, one of the top MMA organizations in the world. Bradley will make his Strikeforce debut on Sept. 25th in Tulsa, OK.

Ted: Good to see things going well for Bradley, who used to train in State College at LionHeart Fighters. He's now with Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts Academy, but is still represented by LionHeart's Chad Dubin. Since his short UFC Ultimate Fighter 7 stint, Bradley's been working his way back up the ladder. Watch this guy - he could be a major force at 170.

Tim Boetsch submits Aaron Stark at KOTC's Thunderstruck

| | Comments (0)

Checked out sherdog.com's fightfinder and saw Sunbury's Tim Boetsch beat Aaron Stark at Thunderstruck on Saturday in Everett, Wash. by submission - guillotine. The end came at 1:18 of the the second round. Boetsch had the guilltine in deep and being as strong as an ox (he threw me around like a rag doll when we "rolled" one time) there was no escape for Stark. Boetsch had the guillotine from the bottom, with Stark in his guard. Matt Hume, a Pancrase veteran who runs MMA academy AMC Pankration in Washington, who trained Boetsch for his fight, congratulated the fighter in the cage afterward. Congrats to The Barbarian.

12 MMA events tonight. Nice.

Earlier this week, I did a post on Reality Martial Arts and said they were located in Lancaster County. NOT TRUE (Thanks to an email from George McGinnis, who gave me my first-ever "Boooo" for getting his hopes up that the academy was closer to home) RMA is in Quakertown, which is located in Bucks County. Here's their Web site for more info.

LionHeart Fighter Dave Sachs will be travelling to Worcester, MA to compete in the Wartown Beatdown 3 in Worcester, MA. Dave will be putting his 5-1 record on the line against tough lightweight Chris Foster who also holds a 5-1 Record. Sachs vs. Foster will headline the fight card as the main event of the evening.

TIM BOETSCH TAKES FIRST STEP BACK AT KOTC

BoetschHeath.jpg
Tim Boetsch with a knee to David Heath.

from mmaweekly.com:
After exploding onto the national mixed martial arts scene with his impressive victory over David Heath at UFC 81, Tim Boetsch was out of the promotion just one short year later.

An admittedly poor performance in a loss to Jason Brilz at UFC 96 sealed his fate with the company, splitting his Octagon record at 2-2. Now, five months later Boetsch begins his comeback trail.

"I'm feeling really good," exclaimed Boetsch to MMAWeekly.com. "I've been training out here in Kirkland with Matt Hume, wanted to do some new stuff, doing a lot more cardio and I feel really excited about getting back into the cage and perform."

This Saturday: Tim Boetsch fights in KOTC

timboetsch.jpg

Boetsch, of Sunbury, Pa., takes on Aaron Stark, a 9-4 light-heavyweight, at King of the Cage. I didn't know this, but according to his Wikipedia page, "Tim Boetsch was released from the UFC following his loss to Jason Brilz at UFC 96, ending his 4 fight contract with a 2-2 record." That truly bums me out, because I've met Tim, and he's a class act and an extremely talented fighter. I like how he hasn't let it get to him - and now he's booked as the main event on a long-standing national promotion, King of the the Cage. Tim will just have to show the UFC what they gave up; others fighters have done it, and there's no doubt in my mind Tim can do it too.

UFC 101: draws 17,500 at the Wachovia Center

| | Comments (0)

By John Gonzalez, Philadelphia Inquirer
Philly used to be America's favorite fight town, and for good reason. But it's been a long time since a crowd drunk on bloodlust materialized out of the ether and followed Muhammad Ali through the streets after hearing a rumor that he was on his way to rumble with Joe Frazier in Fairmount Park. A city raised on brutal bouts at the Blue Horizon and fiercely proud of its history has been all but forgotten as a fight destination - replaced by Vegas and other points West.

No longer. Last night, the UFC put Philly back on the mega-fight map, holding its first-ever event here. Philly, in turn, did for the UFC and its athletes what it did for boxing for so many years - bestowed legitimacy and importance on the event. Because when you fight in this town, in front of these people, you become part of a long and noble tradition, and you're remembered well after the blood and sweat is scrubbed clean from the canvas.

UFC 101: mis-matched music

| | Comments (0)

sakaraleites.jpg

from sherdog.com:
Thales Leites vs. Alessio Sakara
Round 1
The entrance is messed up, and Leites comes out to Sakara's music and name. Sakara, in turn, enters to Leites' music, which Leites sings while Sakara makes his way to the Octagon. Leites slips throwing a haymaker but stands back up. He shoots from too far out for a takedown, and Sakara stuffs it. 1:30 in. Sakara is mostly waiting back. Leites gets a single leg, but as Leites is taking top control Sakara lands a short forearm that hurts him and keeps him off. Back on the feet, Sakara fires a one-two that's blocked. Leites misses another shot from afar. The audience boos. 10-9 Sakara. Sakara won by split decision.

I blog regularly about local MMA academies like MACE, York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts and the Academy of Combative Arts, but I wanted to let everyone know about Sibora Chan's American Kenpo Karate Studio. I met Master Chan several months ago at Hooters and mentioned it here, but never said anything further.

Chan is a 6th degree black belt in Kenpo, carrying on the tradition of Ed Parker, the man credited with bringing the art to the U.S. from Hawaii. Parker was the man who held fights in California where Bruce Lee displayed his own art, Jeet Kune Do.

About a minute or so in, Greg Sirb, executive director for the Pa. From Chad Dubin, LionHeart owner:
Over this last year we have had a few of our fighters sustain injuries that could have had a serious effect on the development of their careers. About 9 months ago I was introduced to a group of Orthopedic Surgeons based out of PA that specialize in working on elite athletes that participate in wrestling, football and now MMA.

I can honestly say that finding this Orthopedic Group was one of the best things to happen to our organization since our inception.

If you're attending UFC 101, or if you live in the Philadelphia area, the Buckhead Saloon is the place to be when you're not at the arena. For those of you in the area but without tickets, venue officials are giving away a pair on Friday during happy hour, and they will be showing the PPV on Saturday if you're looking for a place to watch with your fellow junkies.

After the fight, the saloon is the home of the official B.J. Penn afterparty and features appearances by multiple fighters and UFC personalities, including the beautiful Arianny Celeste. Check out this thread on our forums for more details.

Hello and welcome to the 5th edition of the TATTOO FIGHTWEAR Newsletter. In this edition, we will recap the recent Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II and preview the upcoming Warrior Challenge III. We will also provide an update on our sponsored fighters and introduce some new TATTOO FIGHTWEAR products.

RECENT EVENTS:

On July 23, 2009, Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II (CPWC II) once again entertained a sell-out crowd of fight fans. Tattoo Fightwear proudly continued its sponsorship of this event and held a very visible presence throughout the venue on both the backs of fans and our sponsored fighters.

Tattoo Fightwear sponsored eight fighters for CPWC II and they all put on a great performance. John Andel from Central Pennsylvania Mixed Martial Arts (CPMMA) led off the night with an impressive three-round decision. Kevin Flinchbaugh from Hanover Martial Arts Academy found an opponent at the last minute and was able to pull off a win in the short notice match. Justin Scott from CPMMA won his last amateur fight by tap out and has now joined the pro ranks. Lewis "The Beast" Rumsey from Team Vicious pulled off a submission in the second round after laying some impressive first-round ground work; he has also turned pro. Chad Strawbridge from CPMMA once again TKO'd his opponent in the second round. Duane Bastress from CPMMA gave up a substantial amount of weight to his opponent, but still pulled off the win to continue his unbeaten streak and become pro. Troy Jensen and Adam Hostetter put on great performances, but came up short in the end.

Break-down of the Griffin-Silva bout

| | Comments (0)

Griffin is crazy from way back, even in high school.

Forrest Griffin's got a shot - a decent shot - at beating Anderson Silva at their fight at UFC 101 on Aug. 8 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. ... Aw heck, I'm gonna get crazy here - dammit, he's gonna do it! Who's with me? Here's why I think so:

- Forrest is used to fighting at 205; Silva is not. Yeah, Silva made the jump once before, but it appeared as though he put on mostly water weight or fat rather than muscle to get up to 205 from his usual 185. Of course, that didn't matter 'cause he knocked out James Irvin in a matter of seconds. We might see Silva's cardio start to fail from the extra weight if Forrest can take him into the third round.

- In connection with the first point, Forrest is bigger than Silva, although not by much. Forrest is listed at 6'3", whereas Anderson Silva is 6'2". That's only an inch, but it could be a big difference because Silva is used to looking down on opponents, not eye-to-eye or maybe up a little. Forrest reportedly walks into the cage around 220 or so, so he'll defnitely have a weight advantage over Silva, who is bulking up to 205, so I don't expect him to walk into the cage much heavier than that.

- The biggest factor in this fight is Forrest's heart. The guy's got tons of it. He's like the Chuck Wepner (the boxer on whom Stallone based Rocky) or even Chuck Cecil (NFL safety who used to smash his nose in nearly every game because of how hard he hit) of the UFC - a guy who doesn't care that he bleeds in every fight, who may not be technically the most proficient fighter out there, but more than makes up for it by giving it his all every damn time. Silva, on the other hand, was reportedly matched up with Forrest because of his last two fights, which were, putting it mildly, crappy. Dana White knew Forrest would push Silva, basically force him to fight. Fans have wondered if Silva's heart is still in the game, or if he's just coasting until the end of his UFC contract, so he can have a boxing match with his idol, Roy Jones Jr.

None of this is to take away from Silva. The factors I listed might not amount to anything in this fight. Silva's a great fighter and could end the fight with one punch, kick, elbow or knee. But you just can't count Forrest out. Most people said he wouldn't beat Shogun Rua, but he did, with an RNC. Most people didn't think he could take the title from Rampage, but he did, with devastating leg kicks and tight ground control.

Here's a wrestling club you should check out: Gang Green, a club for youth level through college, run out of York College of PA. Their mission statement reads, "Gang Green Wrestling Club is a group of dedicated coaches, parents, and volunteers committed to educating the overall person through the lessons learned in wrestling, thereby improving York Country wrestling and bringing prestige to the region."

CPWC III promo

| | Comments (0)

Now this is a slick promo right here, giving you a little bit of what to expect for the third installment of the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge. CPWC II, and the one before it - the first sanctioned MMA event in state history - have shown what great fighters we have in little ol' York County. Guys give their all, most of them for no money at all, to show their love for the sport. As far as I know, no other MMA promotion in Pennsylvania has staged as many events as Mark Jovich has in the few months MMA has been legal here.

I talked to Mark today, and he said he had just come from the new Lancaster Convention Center, where CPWC III will take place on October 23. "It's the best, the place is beautiful," he said. "It's just unbelievable." The venue for the event, a 4,000-capacity hall, will have four 10-foot-by-10-foot screens hung above the cage, in addition to 36 lights suspended above. And how about this - shades of PRIDE - a 50-foot catwalk to the cage. And as for the fighter rooms backstage - nothing short of top-notch, Mark said. Mark's working hard to bring the best match-ups, featuring local fighters and maybe even some nationally-known pros. Click here to get more info. on the event.

Dear students, family and friends:
Brett Myers: Brett recently took on M.A.C.E academy fighter (Mike Blackwell) at CPWC II and earned the first round win via arm bar @ 1:45.00 of the first round. The fight started with Blackwell throwing a kick to the calf, Brett would soon after answer with a right cross that put Blackwell on his back. Brett closed the distance, passed the open guard and went to work. Near the end of the first round, Blackwell mistakingly stood up in Brett's closed guard which sealed the deal...

MMA Explosion at the Warrior Challenge

| | Comments (0)

Well, I'm back -- I was out this week with something, a flu-thing that gave me a fever of 105 at one point -- but, anyway, like I said, I'm back, so let's get to it. Here's a video Tom and I shot at the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II on Saturday at Wisehaven, just before the fights started.

from mmajunkie.com
A little less than a month away from a best-of-five matchup with Team Benelux, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned that prospect Charlie Brenneman (8-1), longtime MMAjunkie.com poster Logan Clark (11-3) and John Doyle (7-8) have been added to the M-1 Challenge's Team USA East.

Brenneman, from Hollidaysburg, Pa., is sponsored by Hanover-based MMA company Tap or Sleep. His last win was at Iron Will Fighting Championship. More recently, he was scheduled to fight at WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos, but his opponent Marcus Ajian failed his physical.

The two teams will compete at Studio 22 in Hilversum, Netherlands, just outside of Amsterdam, on Aug. 16.

The two-day "mega-taping," scheduled for Aug. 15 and Aug. 16, will feature 50 fights spread between 10 different teams. The event will air as an Internet pay-per-view in all markets outside of the U.S. and South Korea, while HDNet will broadcast the event in North America on Sept. 25.

I checked the Pa. State Athletic Commission Web site for the official results (and injury reports) of the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II, but nothing has been uploaded yet. No prob., it's still early. I'll check back later and let you know.

Second, I forgot to mention that at the CPWC II, an announcement was made that CPWC III will be held in Lancaster on Oct. 23. This promises to be a huge event - held in one of the halls at the newly-opened Lancaster Convention Center - with possibly some well-known pros on board, not to mention our own home-grown pros and amateurs, who are damn good in their own right. Check out the CPWC Web site for more info. Click "Upcoming events" on the left side to learn more about CPWC III.

Here's a quick run-down of the upcoming MMA events in the state:

CPWC II results

| | Comments (0)

You might have seen the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge highlight video (below this one), which has spots from a number of Saturday's fights at Wisehaven. But, unfortunately, we weren't abel to get all of them. One in particular that stands out in my mind is Mike Oberdick's win over Rob Haley. Oberdick, who had a tough ground-war loss to Lewis Rumsey in the first CPWC, came back with a venegance, tapping out Haley in 17 seconds with an RNC. I know there's only been two CPWCs, but that 17 seconds record is going to be hard to beat. After the bell rung, was it me or did I see Oberdickpointing to hsi wrist, like where a watch would be, as if to say, "Hey, anybody got the time on that one?"

amateur fights:
135: John Andel beat Ryan Heflin by spilt decision. A great back-and-forth battle.
145: Eric Steppe beat Shea Banks by doctor stoppage in the second round.
145: Kevin Michael Flinchabugh won by uananimous decision over Danny Signor.
170: Justin Scott went 7-0 as an amateur by beating Justin Krebs with an RNC.
170: Dustin Keener beat Shaun Kepner by guillotine.
170: Brett Myers beat Mike Blackwell by armbar.
185: John Flock used a guillotine to secure a win over Troy Jensen.
205: Duane Bastress won over Josh Kessler by unanimous decision.
205: Chad Strawbridge beat Ty Krebs by TKO.
205: Mike Oberdick beat Rob Haley by RNC.
205: Lewis Rumsey used an armbar to beat Keith McDonald.
265: Mike Stoltz won over Matthew Munoz by referee stoppage (strikes).
265: Jon Tuxford beat Adam Hostetter by majority decision.
145: Jenn Martin beat Danielle Martinez by unanimous decision.

pro fights:
145: Preston Marks won over Jay Haas by RNC.
185: John Buck beat Lou Armezzani by referee stoppage (strikes).

Tom Joyce and I had the extreme pleasure of sitting cageside for the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II on Saturday. What a night of fights, people! Truly amazing from start to finish is all I can say. And since I can't say anymore, check out this highlight Tom and I put together. Sorry if I sound a little sleepy, this is after hours of editing video, but well worth it considering the effort all of the fighters put forth. Congrats to all of them and promoter Mark Jovich, his sponsors and the state athletic commission for another successful MMA event in Pennsylvania.

Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep, a Hanover-based MMA clothing company, said he'll be at today's Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge, to support another of his fighters, Jay Haas.

Although Jay lost his pro debut at the first CPWC by kneebar, he won against Doug Sonier at WKU Warrior Challenge last month by armbar. From all accounts, he's been training like mad, and is one of two pro fights on today's card. Good luck Jay, from all of us at MMA Explosion.

Tattoo Fightwear signs "The Irish Pitbull"

| | Comments (0)

johnfight1.jpg

Larry Novak, owner of New Cumberland-based MMA clothing company Tattoo Fightwear sent me an email today about signing a new fighter, John "The Irish Pitbull" George. John is 26, 5'8", 155lbs, and holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, black belt in Tang Soo Do, black belt in American Self Defense System and also 11 years muay Thai experience. he went 6-0 as an amateur, and is now 2-0 as a pro.

Here's a bit of what John wrote to Larry:
"I have won first place in the Alaska State Submission Grappling Tournament in the 155lbs division... also first place in the Absolute division of the same tournament... I have won other medals and trophies etc. in other smaller tournaments but that one was a big deal. I hold the 155lbs Championship Belt for a venue out of Alaska and I am in the process of trying to get on a card right now that is going to be held in Iraq. It will be a free show for the troops and the first time in history that a show like this will be held in a war zone. Of course it will be televised, so I am excited to find out about that card soon."

Blackman MMA at BFC: 5 for 5

| | Comments (0)

fightforfun.jpg

Just received this message from Steve Blackman, who has an MMA academy in the Harrisburg area:
We had a great night in VA this weekend at Barbarian Fight Club Field of Glory Show - 5 fighters on the card and 5 wins.

Plus Chris Young Won the 170 Barbarian Title Fight - What a battle - it is the type of fight that the fans want to see - Joe Yates from the Kennel Club is one tough fighter.

Recairdo Magrum, Darrell Horcher, Nick Gentile, and Mike Diggs where the other Blackman fighters. See www.blackmanmma.com/results.html for pics. This was Nick's LAST amateur fight - He has his debut Pro fight in Hamburg, PA on Friday Aug 28. www.blackmanmma.com/news.html for more info.

Hanover_Academy.jpg
Got a voice mail from Bob Bitner, head trainer at Hanover Academy of MMA, who said his fighters went 2-0 this past weekend at Barbarian Fight Club in Virginia, and took home a title too.

Making his MMA debut at 155 pounds, Mike Falia and his opponent, Nathan Buckley, had a first round with a lot of movement, but Falia's nerves may have gotten the best of him, Bitner said. By the second round, Falia had clamed down and when Buckley shot in, Falia stuffed it and got his underhooks and picked Buckley up, taking him to the cage. Keeping the fight standing, Falia was able to get a clinch and knocked Buckley out with a knee, Bitner said. "He was pretty jacked up about that," Bitner said of Falia's reaction to winning.

In the co-main event, Hanover's Chrissy Adler took on Chris "The Black Demon" Lyles for the BFC superheavyweight title. Of Lyles, Bitner said, "He came at Chrissy and was willing to throw - he's the first one to ever do that." Unfortunately, it didn't work out well for Lyles. When he dropped his left hand, Adler fired a straight right, "and it was lights out," Bitner said. The KO occurred just over a minute in the first round.

"It was a solid performance by both guys," Bitner said. With the addition of Adler's championship, Hanover now has six in its trophy case. "The pressure to live up to these titles is getting harder and harder and harder, but we look forward to the challenge."

UFC 100 at Hooters

| | Comments (0)

Meant to write something about this earlier, but, better late than never ...

So, I got to Hooters really late. I'd been following the event's play-by-play on sherdog while I was at work, but it's just not the same as seeing it. Lesnar was finishing the first round pummeling Frank Mir when I walked in the door.

I saw Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep, who was with York County pro Biff Walizer and amateur fighter Casey Bush. Biff was his usual smiling self, despite enduring a recent operation on his face, following his last fight. Casey, a bit frustrated by his debut fight(s) getting cancelled, was looking ahead to future prospects of getting in the cage.

I also ran into Jimmy "Shrapnel" Chappell, who trains with Daniel Beleza at Academy of Combative Arts in York. Jimmy won at the first Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge, pulling the fastest submission of the night. At WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos, he won with another armbar, this one also in the first round. Next, he takes on Logan Estep this Saturday at the CPWC II at Wisehaven.

Inkosi ... It's Time! results

| | Comments (0)

The uniquely-titled MMA event, "Inkosi ... It's Time!" (hmm .. sounds like something Bruce Buffer says) occurred on Saturday in Bushkill, with two pro fights, six amateur fights, and two cancelled fights.

Here are the results, from the Pa. State Athletic Commission:
Joel Roberts, shown on the promotion's poster, was making his professional debut at 145, although the poster said he was a super welterweight champion, which sounds like a boxing title to me. Anyway, he lost to Dustin Pague, who beat York County's Biff Walizer at the Respect Is Earned show in Philadelphia a few months back. Roberts lost in the third round by TKO - strikes to the head.

In the event's other pro fight, Jamie Toney beat Dave Drago at 170, with a first-round TKO - strikes to the head.

Amateur fights:
Theodore Naratil beat Demetrius Lindsey in a heavyweight bout by unanimous decision.

Mike Bannon beat Brett Martinez in a 170-pound fight by a third-roudn triangle.

Joseph Martin used a triangle in the third to beat Brian Hawk in a lightweight bout.

John Michael Holland won over Shaine Pachilis at 135 by a first-round armbar.

William Leibensperger won by unanimous decision over Geoffrey Perry at welterweight.

Evan Bates used a rear-naked choke to beat David Versuk in the second round.

cancelled fights:
Tom Bailey vs. Roy Gonzalez
Chadbourne Ellis vs. Octarvio Moreno

MMA comes to Erie

| | Comments (0)

Eriefightposter.jpg

Here's a poster that was emailed to me about Erie's first-ever MMA event. The event is promoted by Extreme Fight Club, which is run by fighter Jason Lawrence. Jason's brother, Okey, is also a fighter. Here's the Web site - check it out - they've got sponsorship opportunities, ticket information, and fighter information.

The guy who designed the event poster is Scott Gladd. If any promoters out there like his work and are interested in what he can do for you, in terms of posters, banners, etc., give him a shout at scottjgladd@yahoo.com.

Here's a story on the event in the Erie Times-News by Cody Switzer:
Fans of hooks, takedowns and submission holds can rejoice -- live mixed martial arts fighting is coming to Erie.

Erie's first MMA event will be held July 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Avalon Hotel, said promoter Jason Lawrence, 32, of Erie. The event was approved this week by the State Athletic Commission, which regulates MMA, boxing and other events. "We're good to go," Lawrence said.

The event -- named "Downtown Beatdown" -- could feature between 12 and 15 fights, including two professional bouts, Lawrence said. The ticket will be the first event for Extreme Fight Club Promotions, which Lawrence runs with his brother, Okey Lawrence.

Rematch on hold for Flinchbaugh and Meck

Flinchbaugh

Recently, I blogged about a rematch between Kevin Michael Flinchbaugh and Phil Meck at Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II on July 18 at Wisehaven in York Township. Well, looks like that fight is off for now.

Here's Kevin messaging me on myspace: "Hope you didn't get to excited for my rematch lol, Phil Meck has been medically disqualified to fight. so for the time being its not going to happen. I was offered two other fights, but im not sure what im doing yet. Hopefully ill get the rematch whenever he gets cleared."

I then talked with promoter Mark Jovich who confirmed what Kevin said. "His doctor won't clear him to fight," Jovich said of Meck. Unfortunate, because I'm sure both fighters were ready to go at it again - they definitely gave it their all the first time around.

George McGinnis seminar at Elicker Kenpo

GeorgeGroupshot.JPG

George McGinnis, purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and owner of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, put on a great MMA seminar at Elicker Kenpo Karate Academy in West Manchester Township in February. And tomorrow - Friday - he's going to do it again.

The seminar will be from 6-8 p.m. at the academy, located inside the West Manchester Mall. From Elicker's Web site: "Lesson includes grappling, ground techniques, and locks and more. Cost is $20 if registered and paid by July 1st OTHERWISE $25 registration after July 1st."

Elicker.jpg

jayhaas3.jpg
Hanover Academy of MMA's Jay Haas

On the subject of the MMA academies in the area cross-training and helping each other grow, I talked with George McGinnis from York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion a couple weeks ago on the subject.

As I had reported before, Jay Haas, from Hanover Academy of MMA, had been training at YMMAA. George gave me an update, saying Jay had been there for the last month or so, stopping by about once a week.

George said his role was to "Help him focus on his already established ground game. ... We're simply helping Jay fine-tune."

A purple belt in BJJ, George said that he had been training stand-up with Hanover trainer Bob Bitner. "Bob is an outstanding coach. I'm really enjoying working with him." George said of Haas, "Jay has good, clean, pure muay Thai."

It looks as though the extra groundfighting training paid off. Although Jay lost his pro debut at CPWC by kneebar, he won against Doug Sonier at WKU Warrior Challenge last month by armbar.

"Thsi kid being only 18, it's disturbing what he's capable of," George said. "Jay is easily one of the coolest kids I've worked with - he's humble, he's modest, he just has a great attitude."

Jay is scheduled to fight on the upcoming Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II on July 18 - as is George's brother, Brett Myers.

Fighting out of Team Vicious, Rumsey has amassed an 8-4 record and recently gained a sponsor in Tattoo Fightwear. Rumsey fought Mike Oberdick at the first Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge in April, beating Dickie by unanimous decision. Next, he'll defend the LHW title he won at CPWC II on July 18.

Philadelphia has affected his fighting career. We discussed his
victory in the eight-man tournament to capture the Bellator Fighting
Championships lightweight title, winning all his fights with
submissions, over Toby Imada, Eric Reynolds, and Greg Loughran. We
analyzed his style, which effectively combines boxing, wrestling, jiu-
jitsu, and muay Thai. We discussed his fights last year in the Dream
organization in Japan against Joachim Hansen, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and
Shinya Aoki. And we talked about his plans to fight in the future for
the Bellator Fighting Championships after taking a very well-deserved
rest.

Still a few tix left for CPWC II

Mark Jovich tells me there's still a few tickets left if you want to attend the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II at Wisehaven on July 18. Get your tickets here. The card is stacked with talented local fighters, and there are two re-matches from the last show. It should be an awesome show, as the first history-making event was, and there's not a bad seat in the house.

ufc101poster.jpg

from mmajunkie.com:
Any doubts about the ability to draw big crowds in the Northeast will be put to rest at UFC 101.

The Aug. 8 event, set for the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, has already resulted in nearly 14,000 tickets sold and more than $3 million in sales.

UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner discussed the success of the show, headlined by UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn vs. top contender Kenny Florian, with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) on Wednesday.

The state of Pennsylvania only recently began regulating mixed martial arts, but Ratner said UFC 101 has already shattered long-standing boxing records in The Keystone State.

"We put tickets on sale, I believe sometime at the end of April or early May, and we've sold almost 14,000 tickets," Ratner said. "It's the biggest event in Pennsylvania history, as far as a live gate, already."

Yeah ... I'll say this: I'm going to reserve my judgment until I talk with promoters Ryan Kerwin and Raymond Gokool. Maybe this is a tongue-in-cheek thing, just trying to create characters, like pro wrestling. You know, give the crowd heels to boo and babyfaces to cheer (or maybe the opposite). Still, if they were going to do that, they could just make up names for teams like The Straight-Shooters vs. The Scofflaws, or something like that. If they're really glorifying actual police officers and criminals fighting, then I have a problem with it. I'm a cops reporter here at the Daily Record, and while officers are not perfect, I have a deep respect for what they do. On the other hand, everybody's an adult here, so if you're a fighter, it's your choice where to fight, and if you're a potential spectator, you can either buy a ticket or not. Either way, I'll keep you updated.

From its Web site, here's who the promotion has signed:
Tom Sauer (cop) vs. Kevin Jordan (con)
Lamont Lister (cop) vs. Mike Bogner (con)
Taylor Sensabaugh (cop) vs. TBA (con)
TBA (cop) vs. Rick Casarez
TBA (cop) vs. Anthony Morrison (con)

Here's an email I received from Joe Duffey, co-owner of Academy of Combative Arts in York City:

Daniel (BJJ champion Daniel Beleza) took Jimmy Chappell up to the Poconos for the WKU Warrior Challenge for a fight. Jimmy won in the first round via armbar. Also, Daniel took a team of guys(Team Beleza is the fight name) to Scranton today (6/27) for the PA Brazillian Jiu Jitsu tournament and all of our guys placed. We had 2 in the kids division, Chaz and Jordan, both winning gold, 4 in the adults white belt division(in 3 different weight classes), Tom(gold), Jaysin(bronze), Josh(gold), Tux(silver) which equated to 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal, and 2 in blue belt division(2 different weight classes), Jimmy(gold) and Mike(Bronze) resulting in a gold and bronze medal.
I'm very proud of them so I wanted to share the news. Joe Duffey

UCFC video highlights

| | Comments (0)

This video was sent to me by Chad Dubin at LionHeart. Here's the lowdown on LH's fighters: "Phil Davis improved his unbeaten professional record to 4-0 with another 1st round TKO over David Baggett. In his first four professional fights, Phil has gone into the second round only once.

Paul Bradley got back to his winning ways to improve his record to 11-1 with a dominating performance over Leonardo Pecanha. Paul won another stand up war by unanimous decision."

Talked with WKU Warrior Challenge promoter Mark Jovich last night and he had nothing but good things to say about Friday's event in the Poconos at Pocono Manor.

Mark said there were about 700 people in attendence: "Good crowd, plenty of room, not a bad seat in the house," he said. "I was really happy with the way the evetn went."

Mark gave me a few results from the York area fighters: Brett Myers from George McGinnis' York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion won in the first round by ref stoppage. Jimmy "Shrapnel" Chappell also won in the first with a submission, follwing a short, but heated stand-up battle with his opponent. And Chad Strawbridge scored a KO early in the first round. Nice job, guys.

I'll have more infortmation as it becomes available.

UCFC Rumble on the Rivers results?

| | Comments (0)

Still trying to find results from last night's UCFC "Rumble on the Rivers" event that went down in Pittsburgh and featured LionHeart Fighters Phil Davis and Paul Bradley (word was David Sachs did not fight) plus veterans like Rich Clementi and Cole Miller, not to mention hot female prospect - and new LionHeart Fighter Meghan Wright. I'll let you know when I find out something.

Scott subs Finch at WKU Warrior Challenge

| | Comments (1)

Just watched Justin "Skiz" Scott vs. Jesse Finch, who fought at the WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos on Friday night. Scott, of York, worked an excellent ground game and scored an arm bar victory early in the first round. Scott, who is 7-0 as an amateur, trains at MACE in Red Lion.

See the video here at MMA Melee. Thanks to Joe Piazza for uploading the video.

Local fighters win big in the Poconos

| | Comments (0)

Just talked with Jerod Phillips of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep Fightwear. He gave me some of the winners from last night's WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos.

First, in the main event, TOS-sponsored welterweight fighter Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman didn't get to fight. Apparently, Charlie's opponent, Marcus Ajian, failed his pre-fight physical, Jerod said.

Former York resident and Scranton native son Lou Armezzani, of LionHeart Fighters, won in a matter of seconds against York's Anthony Dick, of MACE in Red Lion.

York area fighters Duane Bastress, Jay Haas, and Justin Scott all won their fights decisively in the first round, Jerod said.

Congrats guys from MMA Explosion.
