Beware the "Night Crawler" - Brett Myers wins in Va.

ymmaalogo.jpg

Here's an email I received from George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy (with minimal edits) on the debut of his brother, welterweight fighter Brett Myers, at this weekend's Gladiator Fight Club in Virginia:

Brett "Night Crawler" Myers of the York Mixed Martial Arts Academy was scheduled this past weekend (September 27th 08) to make his amateur MMA debut at the Gladiator Fight Club in Winchester VA's Sportsplex.

Myers and his opponent (Bryan Lane of Fairfax - Yamasaki Academy) weighed in at the appropriate weight and were placed on the fourth slot of the fight card. Myers, a submission fighter and MMA apprentice under his brother George McGinnis, would take on the Fairfax fighter who is also an amateur with a wrestling background and MMA training and was currently listed at 0 - 1 - 0.

Here's some insight on the fight from McGinnis: "Well it started out as planned. Brett looked to exchange and his opponent worked in for the clinch. Brett looked for the guillotine but didn't lace it in time and his opponent got the big take down which put him in side control."

"Brett kept cool and shrimped his way to half guard and eventually to full. His opponent was limited on BJJ training and couldn't effectavly break Brett's guard. From there his opponent stood up with Brett's guard intact and slammed Brett in an attempt to open the guard. Brett transitioned his hips for an arm bar look but his opponent was steadily trying to inflict damage from the top."

"Brett set up a triangle off his opponent's fury and laced it deep. Brett's opponent showed great heart and didn't quit and attempted to stack pass out of the triangle but Brett soon after transitioned to the "arm bar switch" and finished the fight moments later. Man, I couldn't be prouder! I would also like to say that it was an honor to face off with the Fairfax crew as they are and continue to be classy sportsmen."

Brett will shortly break from fight preparation for several weeks and is said to look into scheduling a fight at the same venue in the near future. Myers and his camp are currently considering a division change that would put Myers at the stats of 6'1" 155lb.

lionheart14sep08.jpeg

Don't know if i mentioned this before, but I went to LionHeart Fighters in State College recently, and while I was there, I met a guy named Mark Bader from purefight.org. Purefight is a video-based Web site dedicated to MMA, from the owners of the premiere high school and collegaite wrestling Web site called flowwrestling. Mark filmed Lionheart's workout during the day and their sparring at night. Mark basically criss-crosses the country for purefight, getting footage of fights, traning sessions and interviews for the Web site. Not a bad living.

LionHeart Fighters dominate in Columbus

The LionHeart VIP presentation of the fighters and the new facilities is coming up Sept. 27 at 1:00 at the gym. We've got lots of exciting new stuff we're looking forward to showing you.

I won't be able to make it to the VIP presentation, but I'll talk to Chad Dubin at some point afterwards to find out all the new stuff that's going on there.

Jerod Phillips, who runs Tap or Sleep fightwear, sent me this photo taken after Biff Walizer's recent win at Intimidation Cage Fighting in Florence, Kentucky. Biff, who fights for LionHeart Fighters, used an unorthodox (at least in MMA) submission, which Jerod calls "Bread 'n' Butter" for the win in the third round.

LionHeart Fighters' Davis looks to turn pro

Phil_Davis.jpg
Phil Davis

Phil Davis of LionHeart Fighters was scheduled to fight in Indiana recently, but his opponent withdrew, citing other commitments.

To LionHeart owner Chad Dubin, it's all part of the game of MMA, both inside the cage, and out.

Not only does Dubin, a Penn State wrestling alumus, provide a solid training environment for all his fighters in State College, Pa.,, he carefully crafts their careers.

"Ideally, we're just going to take our time," Dubin said of Davis. "It's a building block."

He'd like to see Davis, who is 3-0 as an amateur, get as much experience in the cage as possible, while grooming him for his pro debut.

That debut could happen later this month, or possibly next month, Dubin said.

It takes less time to prepare for a fight against an inexperienced pro, someone who is 0-1, 1-0, or 1-1. For an experienced pro, someone who is, say, 6-0, a good 5 or 6 weeks are needed, Dubin said.

That's in an ideal situation, Dubin said.

"Sometimes, you don't know when you're going to get the call and we have to be prepared," he said.

Davis has been on a huge learning curve since joining LionHeart Fighters several months ago. His wrestling pedigree is top-notch - he was an All-American at Penn State - but that's only one facet of the MMA game, Dubin said.

Getting Davis in the LionHeart academy, it was as if the trainers challenged him with, "Phil, let's learn three sports from scratch, and we're going to smush 'em all together."

Dubin said that in wrestling, everyone learns the same moves, but from those moves, each wrestler is able to develop their own style. And just as Davis did with collegiate wrestling, he's slowly developing his own MMA style, Dubin said.

A style that soon could be unleashed on MMA's pro ranks.

Jiujitsushare.com

flag_brazilian.gif

George "Phoenix" McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy sent me an email about a new site called jiujitsushare, which touts itself as the "myspace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu." From a quick look around, it seems to live up to the nickname.

The site was set up by Phil Migliarese of Balance Studios in Philadelphia, a Relson Gracie-affiliated school.

Here's a quote from George:
"The site seems pretty cool and I think it will produce a lot of good ties between other schools as well as information sharing. The site has clips, photo's, club information and communication tools. If you have the chance, sign your club up. If you are a student and or friend of the YMMAA, sign up as a student or solo practitioner under our school or an affiliated club."

YMMAA at the Keystone Games

ymmaa_logo.jpeg

George McGinnis, instructor at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, sent out this emial on how YMMAA did at the Keystone Games in the judo tournament:

Among the Keystone Games competitors today (July 27th 08) were YMMAA representatives George McGinnis and Wayne Schaffer. To accompany them with technical support was long time friend and coach, Charles Parker.

McGinnis and Schaffer competed in both Masters and Seniors. McGinnis would go on to place 3rd in Men's Masters middle weight and Schaffer would go on to place 2nd in Men's Masters light. McGinnis was bumped out of the Seniors division his fourth fight in by a controversial (Ipon) call that even had the audience pleading with disappointment. Schaffer was eliminated his 3rd fight in by Ipon.

Here's a few words regarding the event and the importance behind Judo. McGinnis: "I have been doing B.J.J now for a few years but I have to admit that previously one of the major draw backs to my overall game was take downs. Since I have committed time and consistent effort to Judo and becoming more well rounded, events like today help me gauge were I am one event to the next. I'd like to thank my friend Chuck for being persistent and patient with me through my Judo development. Today was for you my friend!" McGinnis, Parker and several others are scheduled to compete in numerous B.J.J / Judo tournaments over the next two months.

New huge MMA Training Facility opens

When the MMA rules and regs are approved in Pennsylvania, I can almost guarantee that Team LionHeart will be a major player. Check that - they'll be a major player on the East Coast before that happens. Take a look:
