Tattoo Fightwear is sponsoring James "Shrapnel" Chappell, here are a few of his stats:
-Green Belt USMC Martial Arts
-High School Wrestling
-Blue Belt BJJ
-1yr. Boxing/Muy Thai
-Competed in NAGA, UGC and took a gold medal at the PA.State BJJ Tournament
-Ammy record: 3-0

To see one of Chappell's fights, click here.

Ted's Take: Jimmy's won all of his fights by armbar - which, don't get me wrong, is a great thing - but I can't wait to see it when he lets his hands go.

Tattoo Fightwear at MACE (Martial Arts with a Combat Emphasis) in Red Lion.

On October 23, 2009 5 Tattoo Fightwear sponsored stepped into the cage in front of a packed house at the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge 3 and came out victorious.

To start the night off John Andel won the title in his weight class by dominating his opponent on the ground for three rounds to win by decision. In the next fight Jeff Runk won a spirited contest showing great sportsmanship and getting a unanimous decision on the judges cards.

Duane Bastress stepped into the cage next looking like a beast and basically had his way with his opponent and winning by ref stoppage in the second round. Knockout of the night came via Tattoo Fightwear sponsored fighter Chad Hoar. After dominating the first two rounds on his feet and the ground Chad saw an opening in the third and hammered his opponent with a devastating right hand to knockout his competition.

Big things planned for Barkdull

| | Comments (0)

Fast-forward to about the 5-minute mark for the start of the fight.

Indiana welterweight Kevin Barkdull - sponsored by New Cumberland-based fightwear company Tattoo Fightwear - has a fight next month. Barkdull, who goes by the nicknames "The Pitbull" and "Merciless," will be the main event in the A-Town event. Here's an email that Larry Novak of Tattoo Fightwear received on Barkdull:

"Hey there, thought i would give you an update on Kevin.
He has an upcoming fight October 9th at the Anderson Speedway. He is the Main Event of the night facing Johnny Davis at 170.
It should be a good bout. Kevin has improved his striking even more and johnny seems to be more of a wrestling, jit, and muai fighter, from the limited pictures and information we could find.
We have had lots of trouble finding any video, pictures or information on him online. so we know very little going into this bout, so Kevin is just training hard and ready for anything.
Also, another big thing... Kevin and I have been in contact with some guys from Strike Force. He has sent them his bio, pics and video. If Kevin does well on this Oct 9 fight and the guys like what they see Kevin may be going out to Fresno November 6th i think it is and fighting live for Strikeforce. so thats pretty exciting.!!"

"The Bolt" thanks his sponsors, especially Tattoo Fightwear

Nebraska fighter Matt "The Bolt" Bentley may not be from the mighty Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but he is a de-facto resident, as far as I'm concerned, because he's sponsored by New Cumberland mma clothing company, Tattoo Fightwear. Matt is fighting on the upcoming Adrenaline IV event on Friday in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Here is a message from Matt that Larry Novak from Tattoo sent me:

Tuesday September 15, 2009

Well folks it's that time. This is the last e-mail I will send out before the fight. I want to thank everyone once again for everything that you've done for me in preparation for this Friday.

Brandon and Paris (American Stand Up): You guys were the first big sponsor I ever landed and I will ALWAYS rock your gear in the cage, it doesn't matter if I never leave the local arenas or make it the big shows out in Vegas or Cali. I will always be a part of American Stand Up. Thanks for believing in me!

Phil and the guys (Disorderly Conduct): While a newer sponsor you and your boys have made me feel very welcome. I am glad that I can represent you guys and an Omaha company on fight night.

Castaway Pointe: What started as a business deal turned into a great friendship with me and your daughter. You guys have helped out in a big way. Mari I still wanna get you into the gym with me. LOL!

Eric Carlson and crew (Insanity Fightwear): You guys have bent over backwards for me. I was one of the first fighters you guys sponsored and you are another company that has just made me feel like part of the family. Insanity is another company that will be a part of my sponsorship crew as long as I in the cage!

Mike and Sigrid Moylan (Shamrock Development): I have enjoyed working with you guys over the last year and hands down you are two of my favorite clients (not your general ass kissing job here LOL!). I have really enjoyed the energy you guys have brought to the gym and your workouts. Thanks for the sponsorship!

Larry Novak (Tattoo Fightwear): You have really been trying to push my name especially on the East Coast and that to me is an priceless service. I love what your company stands for and am proud to be a part of the team at Tattoo.

Joe Stickman (Stickman Graphics): You guys stepped up to help out on a last minute e-mail. You guys have helped me get the names of all these great companies out there. Thank you so much! I hope this is the first step towards a continuing partnership.

Smitty, Dom and the Gang (Big Brain Productions): I've known Smitty a long time since I got my first tattoo ten years ago actually from Chris. Thirteen or fourteen tats later I'm back getting inked by Dom (amazing artist) and kicking with the boys at the shop. You guys are down to earth, genuine and generally speaking bad ass! Thanks so much for all you've done.

Shriers: Linda, Sami and family. Linda I have really enjoyed working with you over the last year. You have been very supportive of me and my fighting career and I appreciate it. Sami I look at you like a little sister...You've been out to most of my fights over the last year and will keep coming I'm sure!

Thanks again guys, you've done your part and now it's time for me to do mine! See you at the fights!

Larry Novak of Tattoo Fightwear sent me an email about the latest fighter he's sponsoring, Indiana welterweight Kevin Barkdull:

"He will be fighting Chad Reiner from the UFC on Aug. 28. Kevin is 21 years old 6'1" weighing in at 170. Kevin has been fighting for 4 years now and has moved to the professional side of fighting. He studies Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, karate, with a backround of wrestling, boxing, Tae Kwon Do, and Muay Thai. He is not ranked and is a freestyle fighter with excellent striking abilities as well as cardio."

Mixed Martial Arts Videos on Purefight

I did a post on Matt a while back - I would call him "The Outlaw," but he already has a nickname, "The Bolt." Here's an email from Matt to Tattoo's Larry Novak:
Larry,

My fight last Friday was a huge success. I fought in front of a crowd of 4,300 and choked my opponent Josh Wright completely unconcious 30 seconds into round one.

They would only let me announce two sponsors but I wore my Tattoo Fightwear beanie down to the cage as well as rocking your hoodie at the after party. But hey once again I appreciate the support man.

Hello and welcome to the 5th edition of the TATTOO FIGHTWEAR Newsletter. In this edition, we will recap the recent Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II and preview the upcoming Warrior Challenge III. We will also provide an update on our sponsored fighters and introduce some new TATTOO FIGHTWEAR products.

RECENT EVENTS:

On July 23, 2009, Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II (CPWC II) once again entertained a sell-out crowd of fight fans. Tattoo Fightwear proudly continued its sponsorship of this event and held a very visible presence throughout the venue on both the backs of fans and our sponsored fighters.

Tattoo Fightwear sponsored eight fighters for CPWC II and they all put on a great performance. John Andel from Central Pennsylvania Mixed Martial Arts (CPMMA) led off the night with an impressive three-round decision. Kevin Flinchbaugh from Hanover Martial Arts Academy found an opponent at the last minute and was able to pull off a win in the short notice match. Justin Scott from CPMMA won his last amateur fight by tap out and has now joined the pro ranks. Lewis "The Beast" Rumsey from Team Vicious pulled off a submission in the second round after laying some impressive first-round ground work; he has also turned pro. Chad Strawbridge from CPMMA once again TKO'd his opponent in the second round. Duane Bastress from CPMMA gave up a substantial amount of weight to his opponent, but still pulled off the win to continue his unbeaten streak and become pro. Troy Jensen and Adam Hostetter put on great performances, but came up short in the end.

The Badger to fight next month

| | Comments (0)

badger.jpg

Tattoo Fightwear, an MMA clothing company out of New Cumberland, has a sponsored fighter, Tom "The Badger" Bingel, in an upcoming bout. Here's some information sent to me by Larry Novak, Tattoo Fightwear owner.

Bingel, 33, stands 6'5" and weighs 225, a height and weight that give him the versatility to fight at either light-heavyweight or heavyweight. Bingel has an MMA record of 6-3, an amateur Muay Thai record of 27-3, and a No-Gi record of 11-4. His fighting disciplines are submssion grappling, sambo, boxing & Muay Thai.

Here's some info. from Bingel: "I started boxing in Junior High and continued boxing into the Navy. While deployed overseas I started training in Muay Thai and Combat Sambo. Cotinued my grappling training in various gyms throughout California, Texas, Colorado, Utah Wyoming while following my "real" job around the country. In Wyoming I settled into training with the guys at Wyoming Ground & Pound in Casper Wy (4 hour round trip). Started competing in mixed martial arts 3 years ago and opened my gym last year. The main motivation for starting my own gym was to A) have a place to train here at home and B) to offer what I know to others here locally who are interested in MMA but not able to make the comute to train in othr gyms."

Ted: Posting this reminds me of one of my favorite comics from the early 80s - yeah, I was a comic-collectin' freak for a while. Anyway, the hero (or should I say anti-hero or vigilante) was named The Badger:

johnfight1.jpg

Larry Novak, owner of New Cumberland-based MMA clothing company Tattoo Fightwear sent me an email today about signing a new fighter, John "The Irish Pitbull" George. John is 26, 5'8", 155lbs, and holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, black belt in Tang Soo Do, black belt in American Self Defense System and also 11 years muay Thai experience. he went 6-0 as an amateur, and is now 2-0 as a pro.

Here's a bit of what John wrote to Larry:
"I have won first place in the Alaska State Submission Grappling Tournament in the 155lbs division... also first place in the Absolute division of the same tournament... I have won other medals and trophies etc. in other smaller tournaments but that one was a big deal. I hold the 155lbs Championship Belt for a venue out of Alaska and I am in the process of trying to get on a card right now that is going to be held in Iraq. It will be a free show for the troops and the first time in history that a show like this will be held in a war zone. Of course it will be televised, so I am excited to find out about that card soon."

Wright looks to make big impact in Pa. and beyond

Mixed martial arts has been legal in Pennsylvania for a little over two months and in that time, there have been several events, but the state has yet to see two female fighters step into the cage.

Two amateur fights booked for the WKU Warrior Challenge event on June 26, appear to be the first overall, but probably the first high-profile women's fight will be the next night, June 27, when LionHeart Fighters' Meghan "The Babe" Wright takes on Angela Magana at Ultimate Cage Fighting Challenge's Rumble on the Rivers in Pittsburgh.

Larry Novak of Tattoo Fightwear, a new Cumberland-based MMA clothing company, sent me this photo of his new distressed T-shirt.

"Tattoo Fightwear -- Strong by Choice

We're all Tattooed -- our lives marked permanently by struggle, strife or achievement. How we incorporate these marks into ourselves is up to us -- whether they tear us apart or make us stronger than before.

Tattoo is the lasting emblem of pride that represents victory over adversity. Tattoo is symbolic of honoring our achievements, reminding us where we came from, finding the strength to meet any challenge head-on. Though we're marked by fate, we're strong by choice.

This heart, spirit and mindset that we wear on our sleeves is the core of Tattoo Fightwear. Our gear is battle-tested by warriors who bear the permanent marks of battle, who have used their adversity to become stronger than before."

News And Review!

Welcome to the second edition of the Tattoo Fightwear newsletter! April was our busiest month yet, which means several updates regarding past and future events, our fighters, and new additions coming to our line of fightwear this Summer.

Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge

On April 19, the first-ever legally sanctioned MMA event in the state of Pennsylvania went off without a hitch. The Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge held 17 electrifying fights with a standing room only crowd in attendance. Tattoo Fightwear was the event's main sponsor and, thus, very well represented both in the ring and around the venue. In spite of this great success, we realize it's only the beginning with the announcement of the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge 2. This event will be held at the Weisenhunt Banquet Hall in York, PA, on July 18, 2009. Tattoo Fightwear will be a big part of this event and once again plans to have a major presence. Tickets are already on sale. For more info go to www.warriorchallenge.info.

Tattoo Fightwear Fighters

Tattoo Fightwear sponsored fighters also made their presence known in the month of April. Lewis "The Beast" Rumsey was a winner and champion at the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge. Rob "The Iron Man" Smith of Team Cruz MMA was a winner at the first-ever Viper Pit event held in Kentucky. Josh "Taz" Ferguson of Team Cruz MMA put forth a valiant effort against Mike Easton at the Ultimate Warrior Challenge but came up a little short in the first round when he got caught in a guillotine choke. We are proud of all our fighters as they continue to embody the spirit of Tattoo Fightwear, "Marked by Fate, Strong by Choice."

Tattoo in the News

Tattoo Fightwear has been blogged about many times on Pennsylvania's premier MMA website: MMA Explosion. Go to www.yorkblog.com/mma and check out the interviews and fights from Warrior Challenge 1.

Once again, we are grateful for your continued support! Please be sure to stay on the lookout for our new designs coming Summer 2009 from Tattoo Fightwear on www.tattoofightwear.net.

Sincerely,

Larry

Ferguson and Easton are both 6-1. All of Ferguson's have come by way of submission and his sole loss was a decision. Easton's wins are a bit more varied: two TKOs, one submission and three decisions. His only loss was a TKO.

Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge

I just got back from Wisehaven Banquet and Expo Center where preparations are underway for tomorrow's Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge, the first legal MMA event in the state.

But, before I go any further, for those of you reading this who are thinking about going and don't have tickets, THE SHOW IS SOLD OUT. That's right from promoter Mark Jovich.

Anyway, so Tom and I get in there and a group of Mark students from Dallastown High School are setting up the chairs on the ground floor, waiting for the cage to arrive.

The place is what some might call "an intimate venue," in other words, it's on the small side, but that's good for the first show, as I've said before. Start small, sell it out, and work up to a bigger venue.

Team Cruz - on the rise

Members of Team Cruz

I wanted to send a shout-out to Team Cruz from Louisville, KY. Why, you ask? Well, New Cumberland-based MMA clothing company, Tattoo Fightwear, sponsors the team. That's good enough for me. Besides, Kentucky is where local boy Biff Walizer got his first pro win.

The fight team, run out of American Martial Arts Academy in Louisville, KY was started by Mike "Rock" Cruz, and features just about every facet of MMA: boxing, kickboxing, muay Thai, Gracie jiu-jitsu, wrestling, judo, and sambo.

As for fighters, you've got the Fearsome Ferguson brothers, Bruce and Josh, a.k.a. "The Boogie Man" and "Taz," plus a bunch of other fighters with cool nicknames like Daniel "The Epidemic" Farmer, Phillip "The Rooster" Perkins, Ben "The Drill" Sargeant, Jin "Pretty Boy" Choi, Rob "Ironman" Smith, and Cory "Madman" Leonard. The guys have been racking up the wins, as well as the championship belts and medals. Nice.

Here's The Rooster doing a flying triangle:

Tattoo Fightwear -- Strong by Choice

Last week, I spoke with a local guy named Larry Novak who started up an MMA clothing company called Tattoo Fightwear.

Novak, of New Cumberland, who is a health and physcial education teacher in the Harrisburg School District, started the company about a year ago, in anticipation of the sport's legalization in Pennnsylvania.

"I was waiting for MMA to come to Pa," he said. "I had a feeling it was going to be here anyway, so I started the company."

Once the sport is legalized - which more than likely will happen Feb. 23 - Novak is ready to sponsor fighters and events. He's already connected with Mark Jovich, owner of Central Pennsylvania Martial Arts Academy in New Cumberland, and with Williamsport fighter Louis "The Beast" Rumsey of Team Vicious MMA.

Here's a little bit from Larry's Web site about his products:

"We're all Tattooed -- our lives marked permanently by struggle, strife or achievement.
