Is that a baby in your tummy?
Sam's getting SO close to asking how the baby got in my tummy.
We were in the bathroom the other day, and I was getting dressed. Sam came over, patted my belly and said, "Mommy, your belly is HUGE!"
Then she kissed my tummy and started scratching my belly button. When I asked what she was doing, she said, "I'm tickling the baby. See? He likes it. He's giggling."
And then she said, "Mommy, why is the baby in your tummy?"
Uh-oh. I stopped and looked at her because that question had a different tone from ones she's asked before.
Me (deciding to dodge a little bit): "The baby has to be in there to grow until he's big enough to come out."
Sam (not buying the dodging): "Yeah, but WHY does he have to be in your tummy to grow?"
Me (pretty sure I'm not gonna make it out of this conversation without using words I really don't want her repeating in the grocery store): "Because he's just too little to be out in the world with us yet. Remember the pictures you saw of when you were in my tummy?"
Sam: "Yeah. I was a really cute baby, huh?"
Whew. Distraction achieved. Then she just wanted to look at baby pictures of herself because she's the most vain kid I've ever met.
But I know the question is coming back, probably better worded to get the info she really wants.
How did you explain another pregnancy to your preschoolers? I know she definitely doesn't need the gory details, but what can I say that makes sense and isn't a lie (like storks -- or Santa -- bring babies)?

I just want to say hi to all the mommies on here. I appreciate all the things mommies do, since i just lost mine a little over 5 months ago. I hope to be one myself someday, but right now im only 17 and a junior in high school. Hope you are all doing well, espcially the ones who are pregnant!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I learned after my miscarriages that healing takes time -- a long time sometimes -- but it does happen.
