To my utter surprise, Sam is turning 5 on Monday.
I asked her today what she'd like for her birthday cake. Here's what she said:
Sam: "I want it to be chocolate. With chocolate and vanilla icing. With sprinkles and candy letters. And I want it to say 'Sammy Gulli' in the candy letters. And a lion and a pteradon on it, cuz they're my favorite animals. And the letter S cuz that's my favorite letter."
Me: "What's your favorite number?"
Sam: "Four. So I want there to be a 4 on it. And I want it to be shaped like a lion, and have candles with letters on them. You know, like one A, one B, one C, one D ..."
Me: "Yeah, I know what letters are, but thanks for reminding me. But if we put the number 4 on your cake, won't people think you're going to be 4 years old again, not 5?"
Sam: "No, we'll put a 4 AND a 5 on it, so people won't be confused."
Me: "But then people might think you're turning 45, or 54 even."
Sam: "No, Mom, we won't put the 4 and the 5 together. And I can't be 45, cuz then I wouldn't be able to go to school!"
So I'm thinking this will be a horribly mishapen cake piled about a foot high with decorations.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Andrea's been taking a cake-decorating class, maybe she can tackle that one for you. :-)
