Pumpkin pie for breakfast

| | Comments (4)

About an hour ago, I got myself a very yummy piece of cake here in the office. Moist chocolate cake on the bottom, creamy white icing in the middle, tasty vanilla cake on top with more creamy white icing finishing it all off.

Yum.

Know why I had to wait until 2 o'clock? Because I told Sam this morning that we don't have dessert after breakfast.

At an hour too early for me to recall this morning, Sam, Noah and I stumbled into our kitchen, and Sam ordered up some Apple Jacks for breakfast. And then she said:

"When I eat all my Apple Jacks, I can have some of that pumpkin pie for a treat, right, Mom?"

So I explained that breakfast is the one meal that does not offer the possibility of dessert afterward.

This did not please her.

But I stuck to my guns, distracted her with something my then-still-sleepy brain can no longer recall (although I'm not too much less fuzzy now), and we went about our day.

Shortly after I got to work, I got an e-mail informing me that there was free cake hanging out near my desk, just begging to be eaten.

I started to pop up out of my chair when I looked at the clock: 10:35.

Not even lunchtime yet.

Definitely in the time territory that would technically make this piece of cake a dessert after breakfast.

So I hung out, did some work, kept an eye on the clock. Strangely, even once it became afternoon, and even after I did in fact eat lunch, I still felt guilty noshing on a little slice of heaven.

But, finally, my lack of willpower beat the snot out of my guilt.

Oh, that cake was tasty.

Cake is a transitive food. You don't need to justify the time of day you eat it at.

I agree with Sue. Plus, it was FREE cake at that, which is a rare and wondrous thing and must be appreciated, as its presence is fleeting.

Guess this is an indicator that I've got two kids know, the oldest of whom started middle school this year - there have been way wierder breakfasts in my house than pumpkin pie.

My older daughter went through a cold pizza phase, and about two years when she would eat nothing but EasyMac in the morning. The only reason she doesn't eat Slim Jims now for breakfast is because her orthodontist told her they're on the no-no list until the braces come off.

Kudos for having the wherewithal to resist the call of the cake until p.m. in order to make a point. The day will come, though, girlfriend, when you'll simply be glad that they're eating breakfast - whatever bizarre thing it is. (So more cake for you!)

I have three boys, 17, 15 and 12. Pumpkin pie for breakfast is their number one choice. I make it year round. It is quick and easy and typically is a grab and go meal. Don't forget the Redi Whip on top!
