Green eggs and ham

Last night, Sam and I read "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss.

We've read it a lot
since she was a tot.
But the message, I think,
is lost in a blink.

Why do I think that? Because after we were done reading it, I said to her, "So he really liked green eggs and ham, even though he really, really, REALLY thought he wouldn't, huh?"

Sam: "Yup. He just tried them, and then he liked them."

Me: "And you've tried some new foods lately, and you've liked them, right? Like watermelon, and shredded cheese."

Sam: "Yeah, I love them."

Me: "So maybe, when we go to Thanksgiving at Nana and Pop's this week, you could try some turkey. It tastes just like chicken, you know." (Sam's Thanksgiving dinner will consist of corn, a buttered roll, the bite of mashed potatoes we'll make her eat, and as few as two, and as many as four, kinds of dessert. I guarantee it.)

Sam (making the obligatory "blech" face): "I don't think so, Mom. Turkey's just yucky."

Me: "Do you remember tasting turkey before?"

Sam: "No. I just know it's yucky and I really don't want to eat it."

Me: "Well, the man in the book thought he really didn't want to eat green eggs and ham, either. But Sam-I-Am gets him to taste them, and he likes them."

Sam: "Mom, I just really don't want to talk about this anymore."

So Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! Here's hoping you get your picky eaters to try something new. I'm pretty sure mine's sticking to the basics again this year.
