He walked! He walked!

Just a few hours before the 1-year anniversary of Mr. Noah's appearance in the world, he dazzled us by taking his first real steps.

I shrieked like a Banshee. "Damon! Damon! Noah just walked! He really did it! GET DOWN HERE!"

(I'd like to take this moment to remind you that the ceiling in most of my first floor is ripped out -- it's an old house and a long story -- so there's never any real need to yell to get the attention of a person on the second floor.)

We spent the next half-hour trying to persuade him to keep trying. He basically teeters while standing solo, takes one or two steps and then either a) falls on his face, or b) falls on his butt.

But we were fascinated. Even Sam went ga-ga. She ran to her toy box and grabbed her pom-poms so she could officially cheer him on. ("Go, Noah, go! Go, Noah, go! You can do it!")

And Noah -- well, he was clearly a little excited. But after a few minutes, he didn't really seem to get what all the fuss was about. And why was it, exactly, that any time he tried to crawl away from us we kept dragging him back and standing him up? This he did not understand.

But he did it. In the three days since then, he's tried a few more times each day. And he's getting better: Today he got three whole steps before he flopped on his tushie.

I forgot what an overwhelming experience it is to see a baby take his first steps. I get all shrieky every time he does it.

It's just so cool.

What are your favorite memories of your kids? How did you feel when they started to crawl or walk?
