Lovely and stressful

On Monday, amid nerves and fake coughs and gleeful romping with friends, Sam started first grade.

Here's a pic of her before she ran off to the bus stop:

And oh, what a fun ride it's been so far.

Here are some fun snippets about Sam's first three days of school:

1. When I asked her what her teacher looks like, she said, "Ummmm, big." Me: "Do you mean she's very tall?" Sam: "No, round. But she has beautiful hair and lovely eyes."

2. Only one of her friends from kindergarten, Makenna, is in her class this year. But there's "another Logan," which seems to make her happy.

3. She doesn't know the names of either of the kids she sits beside, and she can't tell me if she's in the front row or the back row. But she was impressed that her teacher knew everybody's names on the first day while they were in their seats (I suggested the nametags might have helped her with that, but Sam said, "No, Mom, we asked her how she knew and she said, 'I don't know how I know all your names. I just do.'")

4. I'm pretty certain she hasn't eaten any peanut butter sandwich I've packed for her. She's eaten the cookies and the Rice Krispie Treat with chocolate on it and the applesauce I sent, but actual food? Nah.

5. On Monday, her lunchbox "leaked," she told me. Me: "What do you mean it leaked?" Sam: "I mean my juice box squirted juice out and leaked it all over." Me: "Did you open the juice pouch and put the straw in it first?" Sam: "Well, yeah, and then I didn't like it, so I just put it back in my lunchbox."

6. On Tuesday, she left her lunchbox on the bus on the way home.

7. On Wednesday, she completely missed her bus to go home. Me: "Did any of the other kids miss the bus, or was it just you?" Sam: "No, it was me and Wade, cuz we didn't hear them call our number." Me: "Then how did you get home?" Husband: "Oh, the school called me, and I went and picked her up."

8. Sam got to choose some things to take to school so her class could learn about her. She took some of her model shots, a cute picture of Noah in the bathtub (no boy parts visible, don't worry), a picture of our cat, Jack, in a paper grocery bag -- and a giant stuffed snake. Me: "Why are you taking your snake?" Sam: "Because I've seen two real live snakes." Me: "I know you saw one on the boardwalk this summer and got to touch it." Sam: "Yup, and I saw a really long black snake on the bridge by our house, and it bit Daddy and then he KICKED IT (here she acted out the kicking) in the head, and it was so cool!"

I can't wait for the first parent-teacher conference.
