Sam still asks us a lot of in-depth questions about death and souls and where heaven is and what happens to people -- and pets -- after they die.
This weekend, we had an extended conversation, led by Sam, in the car about where souls go when people die. She knows we usually bury people's bodies because she saw that at Great-Grammy's funeral last year.
But what a soul is and what happens to it? Well, that's a little more tricky.
Here's a breakdown of what Sam has decided:
1. Heaven is not a place. Heaven is a person. That's because people always say when someone dies that his/her soul "will be taken care of in Heaven." "People take care of people; places don't take care of people," Sam said. "So heaven must be a person."
2. Heaven is a man. Because he's a man, though, he doesn't know how to take care of all the babies' souls that are sent to him (a friend of mine recently had a miscarriage, and Sam has asked a lot of questions about how a baby can die in a mommy's tummy. Plus, I have a niece who died when she was 11 days old, and Sam knows about her, too). So Heaven has "helpers" who are girls who take care of the babies' souls.
3. These helpers might or might not be angels. See, angels live in the clouds, not up with Heaven. How does Sam know this? Because I once told her that there's no need to be afraid during thunderstorms because thunder is just the sound of angels bowling, and the lightning is what happens when an angel gets a strike. (Thanks, Mom, for that bit of wisdom :) And since Sam knows rain comes from clouds, this means angels must live in the clouds.
4. When the angels aren't bowling, they are watching over people and their stuff on Earth. "So if someone, like Mommy, has parked her car somewhere at night, and Mommy's not there to watch it, and a bad person wants to steal it, then an angel will put a protective white bubble around the car so that if the bad man tries to touch it, it will, like, shock him and throw him backwards, and then he can't steal the car."
All in all, not bad for a 6-year-old.
