Desperate housewives: 'Mad Men' edition

|

We figured that most people didn't watch "Saturday Night Live" last weekend since the Black Eyed Peas performed. (Ugh.) Unfortunately, that means you missed celebrity guest January Jones, aka Betty Draper from "Mad Men." In the segment below, she re-assumes her '60s housewife role for a spot-on parody about how gender and racial stereotyping were part of throwing "the perfect party." (We love the to-do list and punch recipe.)

Five links to start your day off right: Part of a complete, balanced breakfast.

  • We love wearing short sleeves in November. (Well, it was fun while it lasted.)

  • Won't you tell me how to get to "Sesame Street?" (Now you have to go over the hill.)

  • Millions were awed by the "Mad Men" finale. (Maybe you'll start watching, too?)

  • More evidence that the Letterman scandal was fake? (Ratings ruse?)

  • Browse our new gallery and share your photos. (So easy a YDR reporter can do it.)
  • Halloween costume fun

Five weekend highlights. (Thank goodness for selective memory.)
Had a mini "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" marathon. (Thank you YouTube.)

Tried Thai food from Pho Bistro in York. (Menu added to my take-out collection.)

Haunted the White Rose and a friend's party on Halloween. (Check in Tuesday for promised pics of FlipSide's costume.)

Saw "This Is It," the No. 1 movie. (Those moves. That voice. Miss you M.J.)

Watched the Yanks beat the Phils...again. (I missed "Mad Men" for that?)

Five links to start your day off right: Part of a complete, balanced breakfast.

  • Two downtown clubs closed. (York officially needs to get its groove back.)
And, as if we needed more band news:

  • Kanye West and Lady Gaga canceled their "Fame Kills" tour. (We knew it was too good to be true.)

  • Scandal rocked the Letterman camp. (Sex, lies and video tape.)

  • Ex-Governor Sarah Palin could be a best-seller. (Move over, Dan Brown.)

  • James Franco, who starred in the Oscar-winning film "Milk" last year, is for serious headed for "General Hospital." (Downgrade.)

  • Thankfully, when all else looks grim, "Sesame Street Mad Men" steps in to save the day.

Five links to start your day off right: Part of a complete, balanced breakfast.

    • Dan Brown sold a quick million copies of his new book "The Lost Symbol." (Who does he think he is? Stephenie Meyer?)
    • Speaking of best-sellers, Jay-Z's latest album "The Blueprint III" reached No. 1 meaning Hova passed Elvis for most top albums. (Is he The King now?)
    • Oprah is going to interview "Mad Men" cast members Monday. (Will Don Draper charm his way into her heart to sell some ads in her magazine?)
    • Attention Dead heads: Dark Star Orchestra performs Nov. 8 at the Strand-Capitol. Tickets go on sale today.
    • The primetime Emmys air Sunday. Make your predictions now. (Hint: Go with "Mad Men" and "30 Rock.")

OK. I liked the link list yesterday, so It's happening now, and I gave it a little name, too.

  • "The Hills" returns for it's sixth (and hopefully last) season Sept. 29. Another cast member bailed probably because of Spencer's ridiculous hat.

  • "SNL" hired two new female cast members. We still miss Tina Fey.

  • Laura Ling and Euna Lee, the two American journalists released last month from captivity in North Korea, are ready to talk about their ordeal.

  • Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are expecting child No. 19. What did everyone think would happen when TLC named their show "18 Kids and Counting?" (And here we thought 8 kids were enough to break up a marriage.)

  • "Mad Men" was renewed for another season. We're actually more excited that the footnotes will continue.

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
gatby.jpeg 1. Rang in season six of "Project Runway." (Tune into a "P.Run" podcast this Friday.)
    2. Caught some of the Little League World Series. (A tradition since my brother's All-Star days.)
    3. Received my September issues of Vogue and InStyle. (Neither 500-plus-page mag fit in my mailbox. Gotta love fall fashion.)
    4. Threw a "Great Gatsby" party (complete with mint juleps, citrus, costumes and jazz.)
    5. Recovered from the party just in time to catch and comprehend "Mad Men." ( I smell another party theme.) (Photo: Amazon)

    4. Mourned the loss of two music greats. (R.I.P. Les Paul and Jim Dickinson.)

Wait for TV worth watching almost over

    |

I'm thankful that two award-winning shows are starting up again soon. (If for no other reason than I need something to watch besides trashy reality shows.)

"Mad Men" starts Sunday. Watch annoyingly vague cast interviews about season three to the left. (Click here to watch a sexier promo. Looks like there's more alcohol, affairs and A-line skirts in the show's future.)

I have my fingers crossed that "Project Runway" can bring classy back to Lifetime. The series starts Aug. 20. Click here to watch a preview. (Are contestants required to have strange names?)

    'Mad Men' yourself

I always wanted to enter the sleek, stylish world of AMC's multi-Emmy nominated series "Mad Men." And I just did! (That's me in the purple.) The show's Web site lets you create your own "Mad Men"/ Mad Women avatar. Choose your body type, hair color, clothing, accessories and drink of choice. Then, put your character in a scene and set the image as your background. This. Is. Awesome. It'll tide you over until the 10 p.m. Aug. 16 season three premiere. (Photo: AMC)

    Must-see summer TV

    |

I've just finished the complete series of the "The West Wing" on DVD. I should try to get back into a current series. I don't get HBO, so that eliminates the buzzed about "Tru Blood" and "Entourage" (at least until I visit the 'rents and their On Demand). "Mad Men" doesn't start up until August and I'm over "Project Runway" on Lifetime.
    So what's left?

I recently saw an ad for a new NBC series "The Philanthropist." It actually looked OK. The eight-part drama follows billionaire playboy-turned-vigilante philanthropist Teddy Rist,(James Purefoy) as he travels across the globe. Neve Campbell, Lindy Booth and Michael Kenneth Williams also star. It airs 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

I found other options here. But I'm also desperate for open to suggestions!

    Don't 'Lie to Me'

Is it love at first lie?
    lie-to-me-sp.jpeg
I'm a picky girl when it comes to my TV shows. I've been burned before (i.e. "CSI" and "Grey's Anatomy"). Sadly, I gave up on the only series I was watching ("The Office") a few weeks ago. It got sluggish, predictable and dumbed down to draw a wider audience. High ratings made the writers complacent. I deserve better.

Grissom is gone; 'Mad Men' returns

    |

William Petersen, a.k.a. Gil Grissom of the CBS hit crime drama "CSI," said goodbye Thursday. His show is still No. 1, so he went out on top. Luckily, Dr. Raymond Langston, aka Laurence Fishburne, stepped in to fill Petersen's large shoes. Finish reading this post for more TV news.

    I've got Phillies phever.

Friday I had houseguests and wanted to show them a good time. I decided to take them to Cobblestones, since they're sports enthusiasts. The Flyers game was on, but we were having too much fun catching up to pay much attention. A couple friends joined us for supper and suds and, as always, the grilled cheese was amazing and affordable.

    Emmy Awards recap

Best show on TV gets an Emmy to prove it
    madmenem.jpeg

(The cast of 'Mad Men' takes the stage.)

I had the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, but I have to admit that I wasn't paying too much attention.

When, I did sit down to watch, I found myself cringing at the awkward political comments made in acceptance speeches and the schmaltzy flashbacks to great shows from days of yore. ("MASH," "The West Wing," etc.)
