Must-see summer TV

|

I've just finished the complete series of the "The West Wing" on DVD. I should try to get back into a current series. I don't get HBO, so that eliminates the buzzed about "Tru Blood" and "Entourage" (at least until I visit the 'rents and their On Demand). "Mad Men" doesn't start up until August and I'm over "Project Runway" on Lifetime.
So what's left?

I recently saw an ad for a new NBC series "The Philanthropist." It actually looked OK. The eight-part drama follows billionaire playboy-turned-vigilante philanthropist Teddy Rist,(James Purefoy) as he travels across the globe. Neve Campbell, Lindy Booth and Michael Kenneth Williams also star. It airs 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

I found other options here. But I'm also desperate for open to suggestions!

First look: Fall TV schedules

|

It's not even June and the major networks are all ready for fall. Here's a cheat sheet.

NBC: Thanks to the 2010 Winter Olympics, the network is splitting up its schedule into two shorter seasons. Regular shows will air fewer episodes.
New: "Parenthood," "Mercy," "Trauma" and "Day One"
Axed: "My Name Is Earl" and "Medium"

ABC: Over in alphabet world, the new lineup is giving me A.D.D. The network should focus on a few shows and make them really good instead of making a lot of OK TV.
New: "Flash Forward," "The Forgotten," "Hank," "The Middle" and "Cougar Town"
Axed: "Samantha Who?" and "According to Jim"
Almost axed: "Scrubs"
Coming midseason: "Deep End," "Happy Town" and "V"

CBS: Unlike NBC and ABC, CBS doesn't have to play catchup. The network seems to be trimming some fat and sticking with what's made it No. 1.
New: "Three Rivers," "House Rules" and "U.S. Attorney" and "Moonlight" returns
Axed: "Worst Week," "Without a Trace," "The Unit" and "Eleventh Hour"

'ER' to shut its doors forever

|

After 15 seasons, the last episode of "ER" is set to air 10 p.m. Thursday. In this thorough piece, the LA Times explains why the show was more than just a hit:

Expanding on the realism of such groundbreaking 1980s dramas as "Hill Street Blues" and "St. Elsewhere," "ER" in turn started a creative movement toward lifelike authenticity in specialized settings that has deeply influenced later hits such as the forensics-themed whodunit "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and the White House drama "The West Wing." In real life, "ER" even inspired more students to study emergency medicine, and at least one study found it helped educate consumers about healthcare.

Hit the road, Tom

|

Just because Tom Brokaw retired from the "Nightly News" doesn't mean he's sitting at home on the couch.

Nope, the former NBC anchor is traveling U.S. Highway 50 in the coming months to report on Americans' reactions to the economic meltdown and the Obama administration. The project is headed by NBC-owned USA Network.

Slow weeks at 'The Office'

|

At 8:55 last night, I turned on the television, changed the station to NBC and settled in for a long half hour of "The Office." When what to my anxious eyes should appear? A re-run.

I've been tolerating it the past two weeks. It appears that business is just as slow at Dunder Mifflin as it is elsewhere.

NBC making major changes

Bad news at NBC

Jay Leno is moving from late night to a 10 p.m. time slot.

The program is supposed look a lot like "The Tonight Show," which Leno's hosted since 1993.

NBC sure is struggling. Chief exec. Jeff Zucker is considering cutting the number of programming hours at the station.

Last week, the company cut 500 workers. Ouch.
