Team Jacob t-shirt

|

Here are some pics on me working on the Team Jacob shirt I drew for my friend Emileigh.

Adding more details. Again just using some Sharpie markers. If you are drawing on a t-shirt make sure you have something to put in between, so the marker does not bleed through to other side.

Teens and smoking

|

This month's main story for the Takeover section is about teens smoking.

Here is my illustration.

Smokingfinal.jpg

I drew this in pencil first. And added color using Adobe photoshop. The idea came to me as I was looking at a photo of a cigarette. Otherwise, the concept just popped into my head.

Most of my ideas come to me like that.

I will use some photos for reference, but be warned copying a photo is a form of plagiarism and should be taken seriously.

I love Halloween. This year my Halloween picture finder pays homage to director Tim Burton.

My spooky scene is filled with ghoulish characters, a swirly hilltop, and some famous ghosts.

My picture finder will be in Saturday's York Daily Record.

But here is a sneak peek.

Fairy tale illustration of Rapunzel

|

I love fairy tales. And one of my favorites is Rapunzel. Here is the start of the illustration I am currently working on. This is not an illustration for the newspaper, but more of a personal study into my creative side. This image just popped into my head. It's the iconic scene where Rapunzel lets down her long hair.

Another bulldog cartoon...

|

It's no secret in the newsroom that I'm obsessed about English bulldogs, namely mine, name Diesel. This is a quick illustration I drew in Adobe Illustrator. The rat represents my friend/co-worker's obsession with rats.

I've been working on a page design for the upcoming movie "Where the Wild Things Are."

Today I was working on an illustration of Max.

Here is the preliminary sketch drawing using 3H and 4B pencils.

I am working in Adobe PhotoShop CS3 and I only have three layers. Top layer is the sketch, this layer is set to multiply so the white background disappears. The layer right below is my color layer. And this is where I add color. I started changing more of the options of my brushes and really like the look of turning"wet edges" on in the options palette. This option gives the brush a more painterly look to it.

The bottom layer is my background and it is white.

These illustrations go with a story about where germs hang out.

They're sooo cute.

Love sucks in "New Moon"

|

Love sucks. Right? In the second installment of the "Twilight" series "New Moon," Bella Swan is trying to mend a broken heart.

My page idea to coincide with the movie release of "New Moon" is a dice that has different male characters on the sides. The idea is roll the dice to see who "you" end up spending eternity with. Be careful though, you might end up with Marcus.

Here are my preliminary sketches of Bella, Edward and Jacob.

Teen Takeover: Teen abuse

|

This month's Teen Takeover main story was about abusive relationships some teens face.

The idea for my illustration, just popped into my head. (That's how most of my ideas manifest.)

My idea was an illustration of a girl crying with her hands over her face. I then decided to add a conceptual piece by incorporating an illustration of another teen in an abusive pose woven into the girl's hair.

Here is the illustration.

I like the look of pencil drawing so much that I decided to continue the theme by drawing the Teen Takeover logo and divider bars in pencil.

Here is the final page that is in today's Daily Record.

When I draw in pencil I usually just use whatever is lying around. For these sketches I used the following pencils: Reeves 5B and HB; Staedtler Mars Lumograph 3H and B. I sharpen my pencils often when I draw. I use a kneaded eraser to lighten and erase pencil marks. I also use a piece of scrap paper to rest my drawing hand on. This is so I don't accidently smudge the existing part of my illstration. I also like to listen to music when I draw, it gets me in the zone...

"Where the Wild Things Are"

|

I love designing pages for movies, especially kids movies. I go to Apple's movie trailer Web site all the time to see what movies are being released.

As soon as I saw the trailer for "Where the Wild Things Are," I was instantly interested in creating a movie page.

I started sketching out my idea in pencil.monster1.jpg

The lines that you see around the illustration are fold lines. See, my idea is to make a 3D desk accessory.

Here, I have added some color in Adobe Photoshop.

Lastly, this is what the 3D monster will look like.

HAHA! My screen saver happened to be a forest when I took this last picture.
