PA Fighting Championship results (some)

Actual_poster.jpg

Just talked with Jerod Phillips of mma fightwear company Tap or Sleep. He was at PA Fighting Championship last night in Harrisburg and passed along a few of the results:

Jay Haas of Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts (and his own school in Lewisberry) got a TKO win against Michael Bunyamanhop. Jay had Bunyamanhop mounted and was raining down punches, Jerod said.

Another Hanover fighter, Kevin Flinchbaugh, also scored a first-round TKO, this one on the feet, at about :38, against Joshua Geiringer.

Hanover's third fighter, Brad Herrick, lost by KO to Justin Lucas.

Jeff Smith, who used to train at Hanover, but now calls Blackman MMA home, won by guillotine against Ric Humphries in the first round.

And in the main event, Dustin Pague of Blackman MMA lost to Anthony Leone by a north-south choke in the second round.

Jerod said the place, the Zembo Temple, was packed, sold out and there was not a bad seat in the house. "It was a pretty well run thing," he said of promoter Steve Blackman and his crew. "It was a decent night of fights."

Many thanks to Jerod for these results. Complete results should be ready by early next week.

The Spaniard improves to 10-1

A little training video/interview from the Pocono Record.

Got an email from Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep, who told me about Pennsylvania welterweight Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman's fight last week at Valley Fight League in Altoona: "Charlie won by tko first round. Heavy elbows and then quick punches. So its onward and upward for the spaniard." That improves Charlie's record to 10-1. Charlie is a Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter.

You can never have too many Pride highlight videos, this one brought to you by Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep fightwear.

Jerod Phillips of Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep recently uploaded this video on his YouTube channel. Both Walizer and Haas will be on the upcoming Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III card on Oct. 23 in Lancaster. For tickets, click here.

Tonight (Sat.), Damon's in Hanover will be showing UFC 103 (Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort and Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior dos Santos) and will feature appearances from Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep and members of Hanover Academy of MMA.

So stop by, order up some wings and beer, ogle the waitresses (you know you do) and stop by Jerod Phillips's TOS table and see what he's got, not to mention the raffles he'll be doing throughout the night. Oh, and yeah, there's fights on the tube, too. And, like I said, the boys from Hanover Academy should be there as well.

Talked to Jerod Phillips with Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep. His latest sponsored fighter, Eric Moore, a relatively new student at Hanover Academy of MMA, will be making his amateur debut tomorrow night at Legend Cage Fighting in Manassas, Va.

Jerod said Moore, who is fighting at 155, started training at Hanover in January. "he picked up a lot since then," Jerod said. "He's got a lot of talent."

Moore, who is 5'10", is facing the 5'11" Cody Baker, who is also making his amateur debut, according to mixedmartialarts.com

Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA fightwear company, Tap or Sleep, annoucned today that TOS, along with Bob Bitner's Hanover Academy of MMA will be sponsoring the first-ever UFC PPV at Damon's in Hanover. In this case, it's tomorrow night's UFC 102 - Couture vs. Nogueira.

Tap or Sleep, the first mma clothing company to come out of York County, offers clothing for the fan and the fighter - both men and women. Phillips sponsors tremendous competitors like Biff Walizer, Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman, Jimmy Hettes and Duane Bastress.

Hanover Academy of MMA made an impact on the MMA scene in Virginia long before Pennsylvania legalized the sport, producing several amateur champions. Bitner, who comes from an extensive striking background, recently partnered with BJJ purple belt George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy to give his fighters a more well-rounded game.

The fights start at 10 p.m., but if I were you, I'd get there early to get a good seat. Jerod said he'll have a table there, selling TOS merch and doing free giveaways. Local fighters will be on hand as well, so get out there and support the sport!

The Arena's all right for fighting

|

vikinghall.jpg
This is the inside of The Arena, just imagine there's a cage there instead of a ring.

Jerod said overall, the event was cool, although the fights were reduced from 11 to 7, for unforeseen circumstances. The Arena, Jerod said, is like a big, stuffy, sweaty warehouse. I remember hearing about ECW fans talking about hot it would get in there and what a great experience it was - it seems to add to the gritty, primal nature of fighting, whether it be real or choreographed.

"The crowd was really into it, it was loud," he said.

Jerod also said the main event between Dutin Pague, who beat Biff at the Respect Is Earned event and Jeff Lentz was an all-out war.,

"Dutin got beat up - Lentz is crazy with his strikes, unorthodox," Jerod said. "It was a hell of a fight."

Haas loses at Arena Assault, but looks to improve ground game

|

jayhaas.jpg

Talked with Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep fightwear, who attended last night's The Arena Assault at The Arean in Philadelphia. Phillips, who was there to support Hanover Academy of MMA's Jay Haas, said Jay lost in the second round by guillotine.

But, Jerod said it was evident that Jay's ground game had greatly improved.
"He did fine in the first round; he had some big takedowns," Jerod said. "He wrestled good; that's been somehting that had been missing from his game."

In the second round, Jay scored another big takedown, but, unfortunately, "He kind of got himself in a guillotine," Jerod said.

The way I see it, Jay's only gonna get better, and probably quickly. He's been working regularly with BJJ purple belt George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy and Jerod talked about getting Biff Walizer (local York pro and All-American) to train with Jay some more (the two have trained at George's place before).

Haas ready to fight tonight at The Arena Assault

|

picresized_1250934874_ArenaAssault1.jpg

Just talked with Jerod Phillips, owner of Tap or Sleep fightwear, an MMA clothing company out of Hanover. He's on his way to Philadelphia for Arena Assault 1 to support one of his sponsored fighters, Jay Haas, who fights out of Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts. Jerod said Jay, accompanied by trainer Bob Bitner, weighed in this morning. Jerod's traveling with Ryan Harder, another great fighter out of Hanover, and George McGinnis of York Mixed Martial Arts Academy, Jay's BJJ coach, is following them, just to give you the whole scenario.

Best of luck to Jay from MMA Explosion. I'll hopefully have an update on the fight later tonight.

Mixed Martial Arts Videos on Purefight

Here's a write-up from Josh Helm, the guy who runs Tap or Sleep Midwest:
Owen (brother of top female fighter Tonya Evinger) hasn't trained or faught in over a year and I got a call from joe at First Blood MMA requesting Owen to fight one of their best, Chris Andrade, at their big show at Lake of the Ozarks Missouri. I admit I was skeptical because Owen wasn't ready to compete and Andrade is a heck of a pro fighter. I did know that Owen's heart and natural ability should be able to carry him to a win though. So I worked out a deal that took 2 days with Joe and we got the fight put together. Owen even had to re-up his blood tests, physical, and re-register due to being out of the sport for over a year. He also didn't have time to go to the gym and freshen up or to cut his weight, yet he still managed to put on a great showing and come out with the win. Owen did mention he was rocked the worse he has ever been during this fight. This moves Owen to a record of 4 wins and 0 losses as a pro!

Tap or Sleep Midwest update

Some of you may know that Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep has a midwest-based arm, called - ya'll ready for this? - Tap or Sleep Midwest. Josh Helm runs the show at TOS Midwest and he recently sent me an email about some of the goings-on there:

Tap or sleep picks up another midwest phenom and a familier fan favorite re-enters the cage this weekend.

Tap or Sleep midwest has picked up Jose Vega AKA "dat vega kid." Jose trains out of First Blood MMA, in Sedalia, Missouri where he is also the trainer for some of the top up-and-comers in the midwest. Jose has had an outstanding career and is considered one of the best 135-lb. fighters in the midwest.

Jose had a 15-2 amateur record, holding 6 titles, and has a 6-1 pro record and placed 3 times and the Missouri state championships. (He is ranked on fight matrix.com.) At the IFC sturgis Pro Mma tournament he won beating Danny Timms from Missouri, a kid named Eric Buck from Greg Jackson's camp and another kid from New Mexico. Jose is also good friends with the current WEC champ Jamie Varner.
