KING KONG Anspach wins pro debut

|

ALTOONA, PA - 10/11/2009 - This past Sunday night at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona, PA, in front of a rowdy Penn State cheering section, heavyweight Aaron "King Kong" Anspach (1-0) dominated James Armstrong (4-3). In one of the most exciting fights of the evening, KONG stopped Armstrong by TKO in the 2nd Round. Anspach used a series of overpowering double legs, one of which broke the lights on the cage, to bring the crowd to its feet and show everyone the explosive athleticism that he brings to every fight.

"I had a lot of fun and it was cool to hear all the guys cheering for me. I get a huge rush just taking someone up in the air and driving them into the cage. I got hit a couple of times and it shook me a little bit, but I have been hit harder than that in other events and I know it will take a lot to stop me."
-Aaron Anspach

In other action Sunday night, LionHeart Fighter Lou Armezzani had to injury default in the 1st round when he dislocated his shoulder and was forced to stop.

Myers, Chappell and Strawbridge win big in the Poconos

|

Talked with WKU Warrior Challenge promoter Mark Jovich last night and he had nothing but good things to say about Friday's event in the Poconos at Pocono Manor.

Mark said there were about 700 people in attendence: "Good crowd, plenty of room, not a bad seat in the house," he said. "I was really happy with the way the evetn went."

Mark gave me a few results from the York area fighters: Brett Myers from George McGinnis' York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion won in the first round by ref stoppage. Jimmy "Shrapnel" Chappell also won in the first with a submission, follwing a short, but heated stand-up battle with his opponent. And Chad Strawbridge scored a KO early in the first round. Nice job, guys.

I'll have more infortmation as it becomes available.

Scott subs Finch at WKU Warrior Challenge

|

Just watched Justin "Skiz" Scott vs. Jesse Finch, who fought at the WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos on Friday night. Scott, of York, worked an excellent ground game and scored an arm bar victory early in the first round. Scott, who is 7-0 as an amateur, trains at MACE in Red Lion.

Local fighters win big in the Poconos

|

Just talked with Jerod Phillips of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep Fightwear. He gave me some of the winners from last night's WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos.

First, in the main event, TOS-sponsored welterweight fighter Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman didn't get to fight. Apparently, Charlie's opponent, Marcus Ajian, failed his pre-fight physical, Jerod said.

Former York resident and Scranton native son Lou Armezzani, of LionHeart Fighters, won in a matter of seconds against York's Anthony Dick, of MACE in Red Lion.

York area fighters Duane Bastress, Jay Haas, and Justin Scott all won their fights decisively in the first round, Jerod said.

Congrats guys from MMA Explosion.

Just talked with Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep, who is at the Iron Will Fighting Championship event in Johnstown. And, unlike the last event he was at, this one was a good night.

First, Lou Armezzani (a one-time York County resident who now trains at LionHeart Fighters in State College) started his pro MMA career off with a bang, pulling an armbar on his opponent in 37 seconds. Congrats, Lou. You're on your way, bro.

And, in the main event, Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman put on "a dominating performance" as Jerod put it, unleashing a vicious ground-n-pound. Jerod said Brenneman's opponent tapped out to strikes in the second round. "Charlie's one tough sumbitch," Jerod said. The win puts Charlie's record at 8-1. Niiiice.

Iron Will Fighting Championship in Johnstown on May 16

|

Not too long ago, I mentioned that there would be an MMA event in Johnstown. Well, I did some digging, and found out a little bit more about it. Here's a message I found on a message board. From the looks of their card, ( a lot of "TBDs") they still might be looking for fighters.

"As some of us know mma has become legal in PA WE are looking for some pro fighters and amateur fighters various weight classes. For an event in Johnstown Pa at the Cambria County War Memorial May 16 2009 Contacts Ironwillfighting.com josh.breto@ironwillfighting.com Regalas @ Breto Promotions 209 Grant St , South Fork Pa 15956 Cambria Martial Arts Academy Cambriamartialarts.com"

Also, Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep said Bill Walizer will be on the card, facing Corey Mahon. Another Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter, Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman, will be there, taking on Marcus Ajian. In addition, two guys from LionHeart Fighters are the card, Lou Armezzani, who recently won in Virginia, and Matt Kocher.

Onslaught update

|

Just talked to Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep again and he told me that Lou Armezzani of LionHeart Fighters won his fight by KO - kick to the head - in the second round.

Hanover Academy of MMA's Steve Kauffman lost his amateur debut by submission - strikes from the mount.

Pa. fighters in Va. tonight

tos-stars.jpg

I just spoke with Jerod Phillips of York-based Tap or Sleep fightwear. He's down at the Sportsplex in Winchester, Virginia, supporting some local guys fighting on the Onslaught Mixed Martial Arts Cage Fighting card, titled "Unleashed."

Jerod said Hanover Academy of Mixed Martial Arts' Nate Vantassel won in the second round of his welterweight fight against Shawn Hill with a knee to the face. Nice work, Nate.

Still to come on the card are two middleweight fights: Hanover's Steve Kauffman takes on Aaron Carter and LionHeart Fighter's Lou Armezzani faces Nick Robinson. I'll have details on those ifghts hopefully later on tonight. Steve and Lou - best of luck to you guys.
