UFC 101 in Philly press conference

|

About a minute or so in, Greg Sirb, executive director for the Pa. Athletic Commission, tells Penn, Florian, Griffin and Silva that, "This is Philly," meaning that Philadelphia sports fans expect a lot - so they'd better bring their A game. Funny stuff, but true, Philly fans seem to have that reputation like no other. Thanks to mmahits.com for the video.

MMA Explosion at the Warrior Challenge

|

Well, I'm back -- I was out this week with something, a flu-thing that gave me a fever of 105 at one point -- but, anyway, like I said, I'm back, so let's get to it. Here's a video Tom and I shot at the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II on Saturday at Wisehaven, just before the fights started.

Announcing the first-ever CPWC/York Daily Record/MMA Explosion live stream and chat. If you wanted to get to the CPWC II but can't make it, just click the banner above and tune in at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. You can view the entire event live, and also chat with other viewers at the same time. The streaming is free, and the chat doesn't require any sign-up. What's better than that? Remember to keep the chatting clean, people. Thanks, and have fun.

Still a few tix left for CPWC II

Mark Jovich tells me there's still a few tickets left if you want to attend the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge II at Wisehaven on July 18. Get your tickets here. The card is stacked with talented local fighters, and there are two re-matches from the last show. It should be an awesome show, as the first history-making event was, and there's not a bad seat in the house.

Myers, Chappell and Strawbridge win big in the Poconos

|

Talked with WKU Warrior Challenge promoter Mark Jovich last night and he had nothing but good things to say about Friday's event in the Poconos at Pocono Manor.

Mark said there were about 700 people in attendence: "Good crowd, plenty of room, not a bad seat in the house," he said. "I was really happy with the way the evetn went."

Mark gave me a few results from the York area fighters: Brett Myers from George McGinnis' York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion won in the first round by ref stoppage. Jimmy "Shrapnel" Chappell also won in the first with a submission, follwing a short, but heated stand-up battle with his opponent. And Chad Strawbridge scored a KO early in the first round. Nice job, guys.

I'll have more infortmation as it becomes available.

Scott subs Finch at WKU Warrior Challenge

|

Just watched Justin "Skiz" Scott vs. Jesse Finch, who fought at the WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos on Friday night. Scott, of York, worked an excellent ground game and scored an arm bar victory early in the first round. Scott, who is 7-0 as an amateur, trains at MACE in Red Lion.

See the video here at MMA Melee. Thanks to Joe Piazza for uploading the video.

A new MMA social networking site, MMA Melee (based in Scranton, by the way) has some of the fights from last night's WKU Warrior Challenge up. Click here to see them. And join the site while you're at it, bro!

Local fighters win big in the Poconos

|

Just talked with Jerod Phillips of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep Fightwear. He gave me some of the winners from last night's WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos.

First, in the main event, TOS-sponsored welterweight fighter Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman didn't get to fight. Apparently, Charlie's opponent, Marcus Ajian, failed his pre-fight physical, Jerod said.

Former York resident and Scranton native son Lou Armezzani, of LionHeart Fighters, won in a matter of seconds against York's Anthony Dick, of MACE in Red Lion.

York area fighters Duane Bastress, Jay Haas, and Justin Scott all won their fights decisively in the first round, Jerod said.

Congrats guys from MMA Explosion.

Tap or Sleep's newest fighter: Jeremy "BAMF" May

|

jeremymay.jpg

Talked with Jerod Phillips of Tap or Sleep fightwear, who I interviewed Saturday at Hooter's of York at UFC 98, and he said that The Ultimate Fighter alum Jeremy May contacted him through myspace and it looks May will be rockin' some Tap or Sleep.

May, who was a middleweight contestant on TUF 7, has a record of 5-6. He gained a reputation for being at the center of controversy while on the show, according to his Wiki.

Jerod said May reached out to Tap or Sleep and "said if we sent him some stuff, he'd wear it."

As for what the future holds, Jeremy's twitter page shows he's keeping himself busy: "BJJ tournament in Miami on 10th. Boxing on the 16th in Ocala. Then mini camp the following weekend. Then Vegas June 3-8th!"

Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman by A.D. Youl

|

spaniard%202.jpg

Jerod Phillips, owner of Tap or Sleep fightwear, has commissioned New Zealand artist A.D. Youl to create portraits of several TOS fighters. Last month, I ran a pic of the one did on James "Binky" Jones. This month, it's Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman, who is fighting on an Iron Will Fighting card in Johnstown next month. Charlie hails from Hollidaysburg, Pa. Jerod said he'd have a stack of these prints - signed by Charlie - for sale at the Johnstown event. BTW, look for Jerod at tomorrow's Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge - he'll have a vending table with TOS clothing for sale
