Lesnar-Carwin to Headline UFC 106

|

shanecarwin_2.jpg

Shane Carwin is the babyface to Brock Lesnar's heel - except in the UFC, the finish isn't planned out backstage.

By Greg Savage, sherdog.com
UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will meet Shane Carwin in his second title defense at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Sherdog.com has confirmed the news through several sources with knowledge of the agreement. MMAMadness.com was the first to report on the card shift that will see Carwin move from a scheduled bout against Cain Velasquez at UFC 104.

Carwin has not answered calls for comment, but posted a message on his official Web Site Wednesday night.

"I can't confirm or deny anything. I can just tell you guys that I am training harder then ever and your support and loyalty will carry me through any fight they send my way," he wrote.

Brock Lesnar - good for the sport?

|

brockyells.gif

Sherdog message board member AnaCondomChoke made this post: "Dan LeBetard, as much as I hate him, just said on PTI (Pardon The Interruption) that the UFC "came out" Saturday into the mainstream and it was all thanks to Brock Lesnar. LeBetard called Lesnar "the biggest villain in mainstream sports" and he's right. The short-term thinking and reaction by fans is that "Oh, he dissed us and the sponsors and made us seem like pro wrestling." The long-term is he's become up there with TO and Bonds and other "bad boys" of legitimate sports. Those people are draws. Bonds saved the Giants from bankruptcy and legit helped attendance across the league. TO gets ratings for his games. And they can back it up, just like Brock.

Face it, people are STILL talking about the UFC, STILL talking about Brock Lesnar. You can't BUY this type of publicity. And the fact that all the "old people" are dissing it will make it MUCH more attractive to that key demographic of 25-49 year old men.

UFC 100 at Hooters

|

Meant to write something about this earlier, but, better late than never ...

So, I got to Hooters really late. I'd been following the event's play-by-play on sherdog while I was at work, but it's just not the same as seeing it. Lesnar was finishing the first round pummeling Frank Mir when I walked in the door.

I saw Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company Tap or Sleep, who was with York County pro Biff Walizer and amateur fighter Casey Bush. Biff was his usual smiling self, despite enduring a recent operation on his face, following his last fight. Casey, a bit frustrated by his debut fight(s) getting cancelled, was looking ahead to future prospects of getting in the cage.

I also ran into Jimmy "Shrapnel" Chappell, who trains with Daniel Beleza at Academy of Combative Arts in York. Jimmy won at the first Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge, pulling the fastest submission of the night. At WKU Warrior Challenge in the Poconos, he won with another armbar, this one also in the first round. Next, he takes on Logan Estep this Saturday at the CPWC II at Wisehaven.

Lashley vs. Sapp video

|

Although he still has not been tested, I'm thinking Affliction or Strikeforce is going to sign Lashley, for possibly an event in the fall. Just a guess. And how about all those boos for Lashley? Either the fans in Biloxi simply don't like Lashley, were upset at Sapp for tapping, or aren't too familiar with the ground game.

Lashley with the G-n-P on Sapp at "Ultimate Chaos"

|

from sherdog.com:
Bobby Lashley fought with brains and brawn, and Bob Sapp could not keep up in the featured bout at Fight Force International "Ultimate Chaos."

The unbeaten Lashley took down Sapp in the opening seconds and grinded away with ground-and-pound until the larger-than-life Pride Fighting Championships and K-1 veteran tapped out to strikes 3:17 into round one on Saturday at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.

Lashley (4-0), who promised to fight Sapp standing in the pre-fight buildup, instead took the more intelligent route to victory.

"Going out there against somebody like Bob, you've got to be prepared," Lashley said. "I just wanted to get him down. I had to go out there take him down, cover him up, keep him flat and pound on him. That was our gameplan. You've got to wear the big man down. We've got other matches where we can test our stand-up."

Bobby Lashley vs. Mike Cook

|

Here's Lashley's fight from last weekend at MFC. It's a very short fight that's got a lot of people crying "work." I don't know if that's because of Lashley's background as a WWE "Superstar" or because of Cook's lack of defense over a fairly simple hold, a front facelock, and his leg-flopping as the hold was being applied. You decide.

All I can say is we're going to have to wait several more months - at the least - for Lashley to get tested. His next fight is against Bob Sapp, and I don't see Sapp giving Lashley too many problems. Although Sapp outweighs Lashley, Lashley's got at least equal strength and seems to have a killer instinct that Sapp lacks.

Bobby Lashley to fight Bob Sapp

|

Thanks to MMA Fanhouse:
Former WWE heavyweight champion Bobby Lashley will face MMA veteran Bob Sapp on June 27 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.

FanHouse has learned that MMA rookie officially signed his bout agreement late last night.

Lashley (2-0) recently defeated Jason Guida at the "March Badness" pay-per-view event in Pensacola, Fla. He will now face one of the biggest stars in Japanese MMA history. Sapp (10-3-1) last defeated Akihito Tanaka at the K-1 Dynamite!! New Year's Eve show in December. It was a bizarre sight to see as Tanaka was dressed as the Japanese anime character "Kinniku Mantaro" during the fight.
