York fighter Anthony Dick at ACA

|

anthonydick.jpg

Got a message on facebook from York fighter Anthony Dick recently, saying that he started training with Daniel Beleza at York's Academy of Combative Arts.
"Since starting with him I finally won my first fight in Massachusetts. They are so awesome there the school is great and the trainers top notch."

Congrats on the win, Anthony. Hope it's the first of many.

ACA's open house a success

|

joefrank.jpg

I went over to the Academy of Combative Arts in York today for their open house, and had a great time. The academy, located in the Greyhound Bus Station, is home to many MMA fighters, as well as others who are interested in getting (or keeping) in shape or learning self-defense.

Unfortunately, I was late in getting there, so I missed the exhibition that owners Joe Duffey and Frank Nguyen had planned. But I have to say, everyone was accomodating in doing it again, just so I could get a little footage, which will be edited and put up here sometime soon.

In addition to Joe and Frank, head BJJ instructor Daniel Beleza was there, as well as Muay Thai instructor Kham and a guy he's been training with for a couple years now, Kaensak Sor. Pleonjit. Kaensak, who now trains in New Jersey, was champion at both Lumpinee and Ratchadamnoen stadiums, which I'm told are the two biggest and most prestigious stadiums in Thailand. He was in York for a seminar at ACA in August and hopes to do it again soon.

Brad Souders: correcting BJJ problems

|

An email from Brad Souders, of Extreme Sportsplex in Martinsburg, W. Va., sent me these videos the other day with this note:

"Here are two videos i shot last night on two common bjj problems. The first deals with the popular knee cut pass and the second is one counter to the brabo choke which is becoming popular in no gi grappling.

Sorry about the boxer show and notice my gut hanging haha and for added Matt,Mark, and Grove notice the shirt lol."

ADCC highlights

Arguably the world's most prestigious submission grappling tournament, Abu Dhabi Combat Club, is about to stage another tournament, this time in Barcelona, Spain, on Sept. 26 and 27. So, here's a highlight video I picked up at mixedmartialarts.com.

de la Riva gives an in-depth look at his guard.

|

reverse-de-la-riva-sweep4.jpg

Brad Souders, of Extreme Sportsplex in Martinsburg, W. Va., sent me a link to this site, grapplearts.com, for an in-depth look at the de la Riva guard:

Ricardo de la Riva is a slight unassuming man with a gentle smile. Talking to him it is hard to imagine that this man is on the cutting edge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Voted as one of the top five technical fighters of all times by his peers, every BJJ school on the planet is teaching his famous de la Riva guard.

Nobody could have imagined the impact this skinny 15 year old kid would have on the jiu-jitsu world, when he walked into one of Carlson Gracie's affiliate schools in Copacabana and started training under the then brown belt Marcus Soares. When Marcus closed his gym, de la Riva started training at Carlson Gracie's main academy; de la Riva had previously impressed Carlson by beating Carlson's nephew in an inter-academy tournament.

How To Select An MMA Academy

|

mmaschools.jpg

By George McGinnis

Hi. My name is George McGinnis. I wanted to set aside some time today to discuss how to decode various MMA programs and the vital importance in selecting a legitimate Martial Arts / MMA academy that will be handling your educational and competitive needs. First things first. The key word in that sentence was your needs. Countless schools out there (Nationwide) are so concerned with promoting themselves, that they often allow students to attend advanced training before they are ready, or their fighters to take a fight long before they actually have the arsenal to do so. How does this affect you? It's simple. In the world of MMA, first impressions are critical. When a fighter steps through that gate for the first time, they (in my opinion) have to leave a lasting impression with the promoter, fighters, other surrounding teams, as well as the crowd. You have to let people know (win or lose) that you've got game and come from a school that clearly has worked diligently with you and has your best interests in mind. Listed below are some key things that you should be looking for and considering before settling in with any one mixed martial art academy.

UFC 102 weigh-ins

|

UFC102_Poster.jpg

Just watched the weigh-ins. Here are my quick thoughts:

- Randy weighed in at 220, Big Nog at 231, which is probably the lightest he's been in some time. Both look to be in great shape.

- As you can guess, the crowd totally roared for Randy.

- Anderson Silva had a goofy plaid shirt he wore to support Big Nog.

- Thiago Silva had these black wrap-around sunglasses, a la Bono of U2.

- There are a ton of heavyweight fights on this card, when you think about it: Couture/Nog, Gonzaga/Tuchscherererererer (actually it's just Tuchscherer.), McCully/Russow, and Duffee/Hague.

- By the way, Duffee looked yoked. Weighed in at 250 or so, looks to be about 6'3', 6'4" and was cut. Hope to see a good performance out of him, he could be one to watch in the coming years.

- Oh, and with his Portuguese accent, Big Nog calls Randy, "Handy."
