KING KONG Anspach wins pro debut

|

kingkong.jpg

ALTOONA, PA - 10/11/2009 - This past Sunday night at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona, PA, in front of a rowdy Penn State cheering section, heavyweight Aaron "King Kong" Anspach (1-0) dominated James Armstrong (4-3). In one of the most exciting fights of the evening, KONG stopped Armstrong by TKO in the 2nd Round. Anspach used a series of overpowering double legs, one of which broke the lights on the cage, to bring the crowd to its feet and show everyone the explosive athleticism that he brings to every fight.

"I had a lot of fun and it was cool to hear all the guys cheering for me. I get a huge rush just taking someone up in the air and driving them into the cage. I got hit a couple of times and it shook me a little bit, but I have been hit harder than that in other events and I know it will take a lot to stop me."
-Aaron Anspach

In other action Sunday night, LionHeart Fighter Lou Armezzani had to injury default in the 1st round when he dislocated his shoulder and was forced to stop.

Hanover Academy of MMA brings it at Grapplers Quest

|

picresized_1253096761_Hanover_Academy.jpg
Got a voicemail from Bob Bitner, head trainer at Hanover Academy of MMA. He gave me the run-down on how his team did at the recent Grapplers Quest in Lancaster.

"All in all, I'm very, very, very pleased with our performance. The guys did great," he said. "For us, not being a full-time Jiu-Jitsu school, I couldn't have asked for a better performance than what the guys did."

- Jay Haas won 1st in the men's intermediate division.

- Bo Christie won 1st in the men's executive heavyweight division.

- Alex Giron, won 3rd in the teen novice division.

- Andy Smith won 4th in the men's novice division.

- And the man himself, Bob Bitner, won 2nd in the masters advanced division. It was actually Bob and Joe Martini from Philadelphia's Rocco MMA who were battling it out for first and second, Bob said. Bob called Joe "a very very strong man. He made me work. ... We went the distance, all five rounds," and in the last 20 seconds or so, Joe scored a point on Bob, making it 1-0. "I'm definitely looking forward to getting to that rematch," Bob said.

CPWC III: Walizer vs. Roberts

|

picresized_1252768426_bifftap.jpg

Windsor pro Biff Walizer has an opponent for the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge III: Joel Roberts, 27, is 5'6", 154 pounds and has a 1-1 pro record. Walizer, 34, is the same height, 155 pounds and has a 3-5 pro record.

Biff, for those who don't know, was York County's first MMA pro, is a former collegiate wrestling All-American (at Penn State) and coaches the Red Lion High School varsity wrestling team. He has trained at LionHeart in State College in the past, but I believe now spends most of his time training in York County.

Roberts had a 4-1 (with one no contest) amateur record. As a pro, he beat Scott Bickerstaff by arm bar at King of the Cage: Explosion on 6/15/07. He then lost to Dustin Pague, who also beat Walizer, at Inkosi .... It's Time in Bushkill, Pa., on 7/11/09 by TKO at 3:14 of the 3rd round.

Roberts has another fight scheduled before his bout with Walizer: He's facing Bradley Cook at Crime and Punishment: Cops vs. Cons on Oct. 3 in Reading.

From Chad Dubin, LionHeart owner:
Over this last year we have had a few of our fighters sustain injuries that could have had a serious effect on the development of their careers. About 9 months ago I was introduced to a group of Orthopedic Surgeons based out of PA that specialize in working on elite athletes that participate in wrestling, football and now MMA.

I can honestly say that finding this Orthopedic Group was one of the best things to happen to our organization since our inception.

Bush ready to fight

|

Here's the event poster for Stompin' Grounds:
stompin_grounds_poster.jpg

York County prospective fighter Casey Bush, whose training video is on the player on the right of this blog, received word recently that he'll be fighting on an upcoming Barbarian Fight Club event in Virginia.

"I'm not really nervous," Casey told me Saturday night. "I just think I'm ready ... I'm just ready to do it."

Casey trains at York Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Red Lion and also with Biff Walizer when he trains the Red Lion varsity wrestling team.

Casey said he looked to fighting under Virginia's amateur rules, which are nearly identical to the unifed rules of MMA for pros.

UFC 98 weigh-ins

|

ufc98.jpg

I just watched the UFC 98 weigh-ins and although I had the sound down for most of it, it looked like everybody made weight.

There were no confrontations when the fighters squared off, although Hughes and Serra did not shake hands. No surprise there.

For the main event, Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida got a warm welcome from the crowd, but LHW champ Rashad Evans got a mix of boos thrown in. As Joe Rogan said, maybe it has to do with the fact that Evans has beaten two of the most popular UFC fighters of all time (or "of all times" according to Dana White) in Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin. Or it could be his in-cage antics, which are seen by some to be cocky and arrogant.

Anyway, Machida made a good stab at English in his post-weigh-in comment to Rogan, and that probably endeared him to the crowd as well.

When Evans and Machida squared off, Evans chose not to raise his hands. Machida, on the other hand, struck a Shotokan stance and put his right fist up to Evans' face. He bowed deeply to Rashad before and after he did that though.

AP story on Hughes vs. Serra

|

serrahughes.jpg

It's personal when Hughes meets Serra at UFC 98
By GREG BEACHAM
AP Sports Writer

Although their sport is among the world's most violent, it's actually rare to find two mixed martial artists who genuinely dislike each other. The UFC is a largely respectful, sportsmanlike league of fighters who often train together, sometimes socialize together and realize they're in business together.

Matt Hughes and Matt Serra can't stand each other, and that's only one reason they're fighting Saturday night at UFC 98.

The card's main event might be Rashad Evans' 205-pound bout with Lyoto Machida in a matchup of unbeaten fighters, but the grudge match right before it is the reason so many fans are salivating for the league's latest Las Vegas event.

A good night

|

ironwillpic.jpg

Just talked with Jerod Phillips, owner of Hanover-based MMA clothing company, Tap or Sleep, who is at the Iron Will Fighting Championship event in Johnstown. And, unlike the last event he was at, this one was a good night.

First, Lou Armezzani (a one-time York County resident who now trains at LionHeart Fighters in State College) started his pro MMA career off with a bang, pulling an armbar on his opponent in 37 seconds. Congrats, Lou. You're on your way, bro.

And, in the main event, Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman put on "a dominating performance" as Jerod put it, unleashing a vicious ground-n-pound. Jerod said Brenneman's opponent tapped out to strikes in the second round. "Charlie's one tough sumbitch," Jerod said. The win puts Charlie's record at 8-1. Niiiice.

Armezzani to Make Pro MMA Debut

ironwill57.jpg

State College, PA - May 12, 2009 - This Saturday at the Iron Will Fighting Championships in Johnstown, PA, Lou Armezzani will take the next big step in his MMA career. After years of training and fighting in the ametuer ranks, Armezzani is ready for pro status.

Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman, a Tap or Sleep-sponsored fighter, is co-headlining the card.

Biff takes tough loss at RIE

|

Spoke to Jerod Phillips - he said Biff Walizer lost in the third round of his fight at Respect Is Earned.

"It's a tough loss," Jerod said. Tough, because, Biff was winning after the end of the second round, Jerod said.

"He (Biff) had him in the 'bread n butter' (scarf-hold with a triangled arm) and was pounding his face the whole second round," Jerod said.

Unfortunately, in the third, Biff got hit with a knee that had him reeling and then on the ground, his opponent sunk in a rear-naked choke. Biff never tapped, he passed out, Jerod said.

"It was a great fight," probably fight of the night, Jerod said.

Respect Is Earned goes down tonight

|

philadelphia-fight-card.jpg

Just got a call from Jerod Phillips of Hanover-based Tap or Sleep fightwear, who is in Oaks, Pa., just outside Philadelphia, for the state's second MMA event - and the first all-pro event - since the sport was legalized.

The event is called Respect Is Earned, a new relatively new, but seeminly well-financed promotion that has also held events in the western part of the country.

When Jerod and I spoke, he had just wrapped Biff Walizer's hands. He said Biff's fight is third on the card, so it shoudl be over while the night si still young, and I'll have the info. up here as soon as I get it from Jerod.

Besides Walizer, there are two other LionHeart Fighters fighters - Dave Sachs being one, and in the main event, Paul Bradley.

Phil Davis is legit

|

phildavisuwc.jpg

By Mike Fridley of sherdog.com:
Saturday, 8:10 p.m. ET: Former Big Ten standout wrestler Phil Davis is now 3-0 after his destruction of Terry Cohens (4-3) at UWC "Capital Punishment."

A four-time All-American at Penn State University, Davis punished his opponent from a variety of positions before putting him away with punches from the mount at 4:29 of the opening period.

Davis provided one of the best interviews the Sherdog Radio Network has ever aired some months ago when he spoke with Jordan Breen, but he kept it short and sweet Saturday night in Fairfax, Va.

"I did what I could," said Davis.

The 24-year-old prospect could make waves in the sport at 205, but I think his frame is best suited for the middleweight division. I believe it's only a matter of time before we see this kid handing out beatdowns in the Octagon.
