The Yellow Breeches Creek is an appealing recreational waterway. But there are dangers on even the most scenic streams. Background posts: 'The Edison of the Cumberland Valley', When the bridge over the Codorus moved and Picturesque bridges going way of covered predecessors.

The scenic Yellow Breeches, scene of a drowning death this week, is an often-overlooked part of York County.

The presence of the low-head dam where the drowning occurred suggests its water power was harnessed to run a mill.

For years, covered bridges have crossed it and then their metal replacements.

For years, it has served as York County's northern boundary, giving the top angle of the triangular-shaped county a snakelike border... .

The two presidential candidates meet at Messiah College, only a few hundred feet from York County. At least two bridges connect York and Cumberland counties on the Messiah campus, a relocated covered bridge (the last of its kind in York County) and a pedestrian bridge, successor to a swinging bridge. When Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama spoke at Messiah College Sunday night, I wondered if they would unwittingly bring their campaigns to York County.

This pedestrian bridge provided a shortcut for North Yorkers walking to York Safe & Lock and other factories on the other side of Codorus Creek. 'That bridge was way down at the end of the (Small's) meadow, built, I guess, by the York Safe and Lock Co.,' Raymond Sechrist wrote in his book "Skinny Dipping in the Codorus"." Background post: York Safe and Lock faltered after founder's death.

Games at York's new baseball stadium are causing people to make the trip from Small Field and North York in greater numbers since the heyday of York Safe & Lock in the first half of the 20th century.

In those days when people walked to work, a pedestrian swinging bridge crossed the Codorus Creek about 3/4 of a mile east of the North George Street Bridge.

Messiah College's bridge, the last covered bridge touching York County, straddles Yellow Breeches Creek. It connects Cumberland and York counties. York County has lost all but one of its covered bridges in the course of modernization. Meanwhile, Lancaster managed to hang onto 29 of its covered structures... .

Well, we've established in the York Town Square posts on the long trumpeter at the Preakness, the woman who won "The Bachelor" and the mayor of Braddock, Pa., that all roads lead to York County.

Now, today, Monica Goodling, a former York Haven-area resident, is in the public spotlight for her testimony under immunity in the firing of federal attorneys.

Goodling might have lived for years in York County, but she left a light footprint here.
