York County's rail trail system has revived interest in local cycling.

But county residents were taken to cycling 100 years ago, as evidenced by the establishment of C.B. "Red Klinedinst's" shop, still in operation.

Those were days when bike races on the track at the York Fairgrounds were well attended.

Back then bikes meant bicycles, not Harleys... .

The Smyser-Royer building on York's North Street will be restored under the Northwest Triangle plan. Other historic buildings slated for restoration include: the old post office building on Philadelphia and North Beaver streets and the Keystone Color Works building, Gas Avenue. Background post: York County's Connection to the French Quarter and York's mayor about Northwest Triangle: 'We're going to clean up this site ... ' and A historic York walking tour of the Sovereign Bank stadium area.

York's new baseball stadium acts as a kind of hinge between two budding Codorus Creek-front projects.

To the east, the site of the former Graybill building and nearby former York County prison are being eyed for redevelopment.

To the west, the $50 million Northwest Triangle project offers a range of possibilities: restored historic properties, townhomes, offices and retail space.

Interesting, part of the development site was explored as a location for the stadium.

A you-just-got-to-look-at-map explains the project area, and yorktownsquare.com posts exploring several of its noteworthy or historic features follow:

The portion of the York County Heritage Rail Trail near Glatfelter Station is ideal for both hikers and bikers.

A major movement is spreading across York and Adams counties.

Old railroad and trolley rights of way as well as an old canal footpath are being converted into rail trails - a major recycling program.

The Heritage Rail Trail County Park is the most prominent, but here are some other extensions or separate trails inventoried in a recent York Weekly Record story:

York County's rail trail spawns intriguing tales

|

The linkup of the county rail trail with York is only about seven years old, but already there's a lot to talk about concerning the 20-plus-mile-long path through the heart of York County. http://ycwebserver.york-county.org/Parks/RailTrail.htm

Here's some miscellaneous meanderings that might intrigue:

-- Users seeking to get on the trail from Dallastown/Red Lion and other points east should try the somewhat secluded, but beautiful Glatfelter's Station parking area.

This site is historic because it's near where the now-massive Glattfelder clan first settled in York County in 1747. http://www.glattfelder.org It's closer for motorists coming from many points east than the Seven Valleys and Hanover Junction parking lots, and it's within a couple of miles from Howard Tunnel, the old train tunnel that's a must-see site on the trail. It's also within three miles of another must-see site -- the Hanover Junction station. And in between, these two sites, there's the welcome Serenity Station stop for a sandwich and root beer.

-- Speaking of the tunnel, it's worth another visit if you were one of those folks, like myself, who were jolted in the trail's early years when kids jumped screaming out of the alcove in the tunnel's middle... .

York County rail trail extension to follow canal towpath

Many York countians are eagerly looking forward to the opening of the rail trail from York to John Rudy Park.

The land along the Codorus Creek that the trail will follow was graded in the early 1830s to accommodate a tow path for mules to pull canal boats between York and the Susquehanna. A series of dams in the Codorus created slackwater pools making the Codorus navigable... .
