Gold Glove winners announced

|

From the Associated Press:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Derek Jeter sure is stuffing his trophy case this year.
The steady Yankees shortstop won his fourth Gold Glove on Tuesday, joining New York first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players rewarded for fantastic fielding.
"I've always taken a great deal of pride in my defense, and being honored with a Gold Glove is an accomplishment I will never overlook," Jeter said in a statement.

The 10 greatest Yankees of all time

It's tough to be the greatest Yankee of all time when you have to compete against these two.

For the past few days, The Southpaw has tried to find a reason to defend Chris Rose, the host of Fox's pregame show during the World Series.
You see, Rose made a mistake of monumental proportions and we here at The Southpaw can't figure out why.
Maybe Rose got caught up in the moment.
Maybe a producer fed him the line and he didn't think about it before speaking aloud.
Maybe he was dropped down a flight of stairs at birth.
Even if all three of those things happened, there's no excuse for what he asked during the Game 5 telecast: Is Derek Jeter the greatest Yankee of all time?
Even if Rose hadn't heard of Lou Gehrig or Joe DiMaggio, the question still wasn't defensible.
He has to have heard of Babe Ruth. Right? Otherwise, would he be qualified to even be on the set?
Asking the Jeter question is like asking if the Earth rotates around Venus.
So, this Top 10 list is dedicated to Chris Rose.
It is the 10 greatest Yankees of all time.

2009 World Series Game 2 recap

|

A.J. Burnett was scintillating.
The New York Yankees starter earned his offseason payday.
Make no mistake about it, though, the biggest moment came when Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter bailed Rivera out.
Now the series moves south to the City of Brotherly Love, where Philadelphia fans should give the Yankees a warm greeting.

Trivia: All-star and World Series MVP

Who is the only player to win the All Star Game MVP and World Series MVP in the same season?

Who should be the 2009 AL MVP

Joemauer.jpg
Joe Mauer's sweet swing has put him atop the American League MVP race.

For this year's American League MVP awar, there are several players to consider:

Joe Mauer leads the American League in on-base percentage, slugging and batting average. He's a good defensive catcher and he should finish the season with 30 home runs, 90 runs batted in and 90 runs scored.

Mark Teixeira's defense has been an anchor for the New York Yankees infield. Just look at the drops in errors for the pinstriped infielders. Plus, the switch hitter leads the league with 118 runs batted in, has bashed 37 homers and has a .292 batting average.

Speaking of improved Yankee defense, even we here at the southpaw have to admit Derek Jeter wasn't a defensive liability for the first time in years. Jeter doesn't lead the league in any categories, but he does have 100 runs scored, 200 hits and 26 stolen bases.

Bobby Abreu was picked off the free agent scrap heap seemingly minutes before the season started. For $5 mil, he's been the biggest bargain in baseball. He should finish the season with 30 stolen bases, a .290 average and 100 runs batted in. He's completely solidified the Angels' offense.

Miguel Cabrera lead the American League in home runs and total bases in 2008. But he seemed to be in a slump all season. This season has seen his OPS climb 70 points, he's scored more runs and he's paced the Tigers to a division title one year after a fifth-place finish.

Early in the season it looked like Jason Bay was Boston's MVP, however Kevin Youkilis has been the Red Sox most consistent player. He's proven that last season wasn't a fluke and he's picked up the slack from the slumping David Ortiz.

Now, for the MVP candidate people still don't know about: Kendry Morales. Sure, he's got a fun name, but he's much more than that. He's the reason the Angels let Teixeira go. He's fourth in slugging, has 30 home runs, is closing in on 100 runs driven in and has a good shot to finish the season with a .300 average and a .900 OPS.

We'll close out with the closer: Mariano Rivera. Yeah, having three Yankees on this list and no Rangers is sad. But the Yankees have had starting and relief pitching troubles. However, Big Mo has been his normal filthy self. Check that. He's been better. His innings continue to drop, but he's getting into more games and he has a 1.97 ERA.

Now is your chance to tell the Southpaw who deserves the award. All you have to do is click on the jump and vote.

The Southpaw's AL All-Star ballot

|

The Southpaw loves voting for the All-Star team, repeatedly voting online and at the stadium.
Our vote isn't always the same, but it's pretty close.
Here now, is our 2009 ballot.

1B: Justin Morneau. Mark Teixeira probably deserves it more, but if you think we're voting for him, you're crazy. We've got a soft spot for the Twins, and he is batting .322 with 16 homers and 57 runs driven in.

2B:We really wanted to pick Placido Polanco. Other than Ian Kinsler this is a very weak position. Polanco's pedestrian .264 averaged pushed the mouse to Kinsler.
3B:Evan Longoria. He's the man. Best player in the American League
SS: Marco Scutaro. What a surprise he's been. Derek Jeter is going to get this spot. Remember when this position was stacked. Not so more. However, we live by the phrase: "Yankees, we don't need no stinking Yankees." So we didn't vote for Jeter.
C: Joe Mauer. The Twin is the head of a tight crop that includes Victor Martinez and, amazingly, Miguel Olivo.
OF: Ken Griffey Jr. Until he retires, he will always get a selected. Don't care about the .225 average. Don't care about the bad range. If the southpaw had his choice, Steroid Bonds or Prime Griffey Jr., he'd pick The Kid every time.
OF: Carl Crawford. He's got 37 steals. THIRTY FREAKING SEVEN. He's also batting .306.
OF: Torii Hunter. He's having a fantastic year, batting .311 with 16 with 52 runs batted in.

Derek Jeter's World

|

I wish I lived in Derek Jeter's World. Really, I do.
Not only would I have won four World Series rings in five years, dated mid-90s Mariah Carey and made oodles and oodles of money, and dated mid-90s Mariah Carey, but I would also believe everyone who ever cheated on their taxes got caught by the IRS. Oh, and I'd have dated mid-90s Mariah Carey.
