Stimulus project on I-83 in Maryland

|

A stimulus project is starting on Interstate 83 across the state line.

Crews will resurface three miles along northbound and southbound I-83 from just south of Downes Road to the state line, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration.

Drivers should expect periodic lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the mainline work.

The project also involves resufacing several interchange ramps: two at Freeland Road, four at the Maryland 439/Old York Road, four at Maryland 45/York Road, one at Middletown Road and four at Maryland 137/Mt. Carmel Road.

Drivers may see restrictions on the ramps between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

The administration awarded the $3.9 million contract to P. Flanigan and Sons Inc. of Baltimore.

Stuck in traffic because of crash

|

I, too, got stuck in the backup on Interstate 83 Wednesday because of a tractor-trailer crash. I was heading to work at the time.

Luckily, I was still south of the Loganville exit so I was able to get off and use one of the detour routes, including Lake Road which parallels the highway near Lake Redman. That's when I spotted people standing on I-83 just waiting for the crash to be cleared, and I stopped to interview some of them.

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't it seem like we're having more accidents on the highway?

Route 581 ramp closed this weekend

|

The ramp from northbound Interstate 83 to westbound Route 581 will be closed this weekend so crews can repair the pavement and install new rumble strips, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The ramp was supposed to close at 7 p.m. Friday, and it will remain closed until 6 a.m. Monday.

Drivers will be detoured north on I-83 across the Susquehanna River to the 13th Street exit. Drivers can get off there and then hop back on I-83 southbound to return to westbound Route 581.

Watch out for slow-moving operation on Interstate 83

|

Crews will be sealing cracks and sweeping sections of Interstate 83 from the state line to the Cumberland County line next week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The work will be done between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Drivers should watch for shifting traffic patterns and single-lane restrictions on the mainline and ramps.

Don't forget to turn on headlights when it's raining

|

Yesterday was an awful commute to work in the rain.

I counted more than half a dozen vehicles on Interstate 83 that didn't have their headlights on, and visibility wasn't the greatest.

If the windshield wipers are working, drivers are required by law to turn on their vehicle headlights, too.

Police say the headlights help to make your vehicle visible to other drivers and pedestrians, and taking these measures will hopefully prevent accidents.

In one of my columns last year, police had issued nearly 100 citations for failing to comply with the law, which went into effect in January 2007.

PennDOT crews to clean up roads, pave this week

|

Drivers might see some shoulders closed on Interstate 83 and Route 30 this week as crews clean.

The I-83 work -- cleaning under the guardrails -- will take place between Queen Street and Route 30, and the mowing on Route 30 is planned between the Wrightsville and Hallam exits.

Three roads will be closed for pipe replacement: Rockville Road in Jackson Township, Mount Top Road in Washington Township, and Brittany Lane in Franklin Township.

Drivers also might see single-lane restrictions on the following roads:

  • Hebst Road from Route 24 to Rippling Run Road in North Hopewell and Windsor townships for pipe flushing.
  • Codorus Furnace Road in East Manchester Township for mowing.
  • Cragmoor Road in Newberry Township for crack sealing.
  • Glenville Road in Codorus Township for base repair.
  • Cassel Road in Newberry Township for base repair.
  • Stewartstown Road from the Old Trail to the Hopewell Township line in Shrewsbury Township for brush cutting.
  • Parts of Muddy Creek Road in numerous municipalities for shoulder cutting.
  • Manheim Road in Manheim Township for widening.
  • West Canal Road from Dover to Route 30 in numerous municipalities for paving.
