Free bus ride for flu shot

|

You can get a free bus ride to a flu clinic at the York Expo Center on Sunday, Oct. 18.

The flu shots are being offered to anyone 9 years old and older. The service is free to those who are enrolled in Medicare Part B and most Medicare Advantage plans.

For those who are not eligible under insurance, the fee is $25 for a flu shot and $46 for a pneumonia shot.

All you have to do is get on one of the Rabbittransit buses at the following pickup locations and times:

-- Hudson Park, 401 Ridge Ave. No.1. (10 a.m.; 11:25 a.m. and 12:50 p.m.)

-- Transfer Center, Pershing and King streets (10:15 a.m., 11:40 a.m., 1:05 p.m.)

-- Kingston House, 1243 W. King St. (10:25 a.m., 11:50 a.m., 1:15 p.m.)

-- Delco Plaza, 1201 Carlisle Ave. (10:35 a.m., noon, 1:25 p.m.)

You won't even have to get off the bus to get the shot, said Richard Farr, executive director of Rabbittransit. Workers will board the bus to administer the vaccines.

Rabbittransit has partnered with the York County Area Agency on Aging to provide the free transportation.

"We want York County to be healthy," Farr said.

Why the Rabbittransit buses are parked at the mall

|

The buses parked at the West Manchester Mall made me do a double-take as I left work one night recently.

And they'll be parked there for a couple more weeks as Rabbittransit's parking lot is upgraded.

The transit agency is usingBuses.jpg $350,000 in federal stimulus funds for the work.

Rabbittransit has been at its location on Roosevelt Avenue for 17 years now, and the blacktop was disintigrating, executive director Richard Farr said.

The upgraded parking lot will include an oil and water separator as the agency continues to go green.

The transit agency hasn't received any calls about the buses being parked at the mall, but people have been talking about it with Rabbittransit employees.

"It's a little strange - not something you see every day," Farr said.

Richard Farr makes Top 40 list for transit

|

Rabbittransit executive director Richard Farr has been named to "Mass Transit's" Top 40 Under 40, an award honoring those in transit under 40 who have already left their mark.

The listing appears in the magazine's September/October issue. It's not a ranking, but a listing of those who have shown a capacity for innovation, demonstrated leadership and a commitment to making an impact in transit, according to a news release.

Farr has been at the helm of the York County Transportation Authority, otherwise known as Rabbittransit since 2003. He's credited with accomplishing many initiatives, including the launch of the first fixed-route system in historic Gettysburg.

Rabbittransit will help state workers through a deferment plan

|

Rabbittransit will offer a deferment plan to state workers to help them with transportation needs until a state budget is passed, according to a news release.

The deferment plan allows riders to receive passes with the commitment that Rabbittransit will be reimbursed within 30 days of the budget being passed.

Rabbittransit operates a commuter bus service between York and Harrisburg known as the Rabbitexpress.

Crews to rehab parking lot next month

|

Crews will rehabilitate Rabbittransit's parking lot next month with $350,000 in federal stimulus funds, executive director Richard Farr said.

The upgraded parking lot will include concrete where the buses park and an oil and water separator as the agency continues to go green.

The remainder of Rabbittransit's stimulus money -- nearly $2.8 million -- will be swapped with another transit agency for future use as Rabbittransit searches for a new home. That will take several years, Farr said.

Free ride offered for Rabbittransit and Rabbitexpress

|

Thursday is Dump the Pump day, and new riders can get a coupon to ride for free on a Rabbittransit fixed route and Rabbitexpress service that day.

All you have to do is send an email to dumpthepump@rabbittransit.org.

Those who already ride Rabbittransit with a monthly pass can apply for a free refurbished bicycle. Every Rabbittransit vehicle is equipped with a bicycle rack, and there is no extra cost to transport a bike.

Dump the Pump day encourages people to try other modes of transportation instead of driving to work alone. Public transportation can help people save money, conserve gasoline, and reduce harmful greenhouse gases emitted into the environment.

Good news for Rabbittransit riders

|

Rabbittransit will not be increasing its fares in July, according to a news release.

The transit authority had planned to increase fares by 5 cents on the fixed route services and 25 cents on the express service between York and Harrisburg.

"Given the current economic climate and the successful negotiation of a new fuel contract, the board felt it necessary to forgo the impending fare increase," executive director Richard Farr said in the news release.

Postcard highlights benefits of riding express bus

|

We received a postcard in the mail today about Rabbittransit's express bus service to Harrisburg and Maryland.

The transit agency has been trying to get the word out, especially with its new service to Maryland. Ridership was slim when it started.

The postcard highlights some of the benefits, such as saving on gas and wear and tear on your vehicle.

You can find out more about the express service by going here.
