Research roundup: In the strange-but-true category, a recent study showed that men who lose hair at the crown of the head might have an increased risk of heart disease. Now, let’s go underneath the scalp. This week, President Obama announced a new research initiative to understand the human brain. It might come just in time, since a study came out this week that found Alzheimer’s and dementia cost Americans more than cancer and heart disease.
Food for thought: Even if you avoid the salt shaker, sodium might be hiding in your food: 200 milligrams a day is all one needs, but the average American takes in 3,300 milligrams daily. Keep up your fiber intake — it might help protect against strokes — and consumption of fish high in omega-3 fatty acids — it might protect against cardiovascular disease. — Boscov’s York Galleria store and the United Way of York County will team up to share information with the public 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 at the Galleria, 2899 Whiteford Road, Spring Garden Township. The free event will include adult vision screenings, giveaways, kids activities and blood pressure and other health screenings.
— The York College wrestling team and Body Rhythms Life Fitness will host a Take Down Cancer Zumbathon Charity Event to benefit a former York College wrestler Andy Miller, who is facing multiple myeloma. The event start at noon APril 28 at Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center at York College. Tickets cost $15 or $10 with a student ID and are available for pre-purchase at BodyRhythmsLifeFitness.com.
