Fitness isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass — it’s about learning to Zumba in the rain.

And that we did.

Despite the stormy skies, about 45 people turned out for our first No Sweat in the Park: Zumba class Tuesday. Wouldn’t you know it, as soon as the music started, so did the rain.

Sister-duo Monica Melendez and Melissa Deitz of Body Rhythms Life Fitness led the class and will instruct free classes 6 p.m. every Tuesday in May at the York Daily Record/Sunday News.

Many of the people were self-proclaimed “Zumba groupies” who take classes at Body Rhythms. However, several newcomers tried the class for the first time.

Melendez and Deitz’s contagious energy made the class hour-long class feel short and more like fun than exercise.

“The time flies, and you don’t even realize you’re working out,” Melendez said.

She said she never gets bored teaching the class and that she sees results. She recently turned 41 and said she’s in the best shape of her life.

“I’m not struggling, looking at the clock,” Melendez said. “The class is done, and you want more. I love it.”
