With childhood obesity on the rise, most people would agree that kids need more physical activity and better nutrition.

To help children get healthier, the Byrnes Health Education Center and the YWCA York will host Healthy Kids Camp this summer. The camp will be led by staff from each organization.

Ron Johnson, York Catholic grad and former NFL player, will direct the physical activity component of the camp. Health educators from the Byrnes Center will teach kids about general nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.

Johnson, a health and fitness consultant for the YWCA, said the new camp aims to help children become more involved in fitness. Many children today don’t get enough physical activity because they are so connected to technology. When Johnson was a kid, he said, that wasn’t an issue and he spent most of his summers being active outdoors.

He said he’ll teach exercises that kids can do at home, such as a boot camp. Other activities might include yoga and Zumba.

Johnson said the camp is designed for kids of all interests.

“You don’t have to be a star athlete,” he said.

Johnson said this collaboration between the Byrnes Center and the YWCA aims to educate children about healthy living, in an attempt to help the whole family become healthier.

“We really want to educate people on health, fitness and nutrition,” he said.
