Boot camps are known for being reminiscent of military training.

Aside from incorporating drills, push-ups and other body-weight exercises, our first outdoor boot camp incorporated another militaristic aspect — an army.

About 120 people attended Tuesday’s No Sweat in the Park: Gruver Fitness Outdoor Boot Camp at the York Daily Record. The free outdoor class will be held rain or shine 6 p.m. June 11, June 18 and June 25 at YDR in West Manchester Township. Children are welcome.

As Gruver and his partner Erica Heim instructed the group, a unified energy emanated from the grassy field. The duo provided modifications of exercises to accommodate people of all fitness levels. No matter how advanced attendees were, Gruver pushed them to work harder and to move outside of their comfort zones.

With some jesting, Gruver made the hour-long workout fun, challenging and rewarding.

At the end of the workout, he commented on the 120-person turnout and said he hopes to see 200 people next Tuesday. However, he expects to see 50 or 60 because sometimes people get discouraged by the difficulty of the boot camp and his no-excuses mentality.

But despite the difficulty, everyone can do it. One of the best parts of the boot camp was the camaraderie and the shared commitment to finish.

So let’s prove Gruver wrong.

We want to see 200 or more people at Tuesday’s boot camp. Bring your friends, your family and your co-workers. Yes, there are obstacles when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle. But when we do, we’re better for it. As Gruver says, no excuses.
