You don’t have to be a serious athlete to beast a tractor tire workout. In the ever-agricultural York County, there’s sure to be plenty of spares to incorporate into your fitness routine.
Ron Johnson, health and fitness consultant at YWCA York and former NFL player, shared a tire workout that aims to condition the body and build endurance. He said he has female clients in their 50s who can flip 150-pound tires.
“It’s never too late to do workouts like that,” he said, adding that it’s a creative way to change things up.
He said the exercises demonstrated in the video predominately work leg muscles, but they also incorporate hips and the core.
Need a tire? Check with a local junkyard or a business that recycles tires.
Do three sets.
1. Sledgehammer: Swing a sledgehammer over your shoulder, come down with power, and hit the tire. Do 10 reps on each side.
2. Strength combination: Starting from a plank position, do a push-up, lift your right arm off the tire, rotate your body outward, place both hands on the tire, and dip. Return to push-up position, and repeat until you circle the tire twice.
3. Flip: Lower hips and grab the tire. As you come up, thrust your hips and push the tire forward. Flip the tire 20 yards in one direction and 20 yards back (distance depends on fitness level).
