No Sweat in the Park: Free BODYCOMBAT classes in August, led by YMCA of York County

By nature, group fitness classes can be empowering. But participate in a class that’s full of jabs, kicks and punches, and you’ll feel even tougher.

In August, we’re capping off our free summer fitness series with Les Mills BODYCOMBAT, a high-intensity, martial arts inspired cardio workout. Join us 6 p.m. Aug. 6, Aug. 13, Aug. 20 and Aug. 27 at the York Daily Record, 1891 Loucks Road in West Manchester Township. Instructors from the YMCA of York County – Cori Strathmeyer, Paige Strathmeyer, Kim Tate and Michelle Thomas — will host the 55-minute workouts. Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers, and be prepared to sweat.

If you’re new to body combat, think Tae Bo or any other kickboxing class. According to its website, body combat tones and shapes key muscle groups, maximizes calorie burn, develops coordination and agility, and improves posture, core strength and stability, among other benefits. An additional perk: Aside from a core of steel, the strength you gain from body combat could inspire self-confidence.

Terrie Myers, a fitness instructor at the YMCA York branch, said the first class will feature some of the easier song tracks so newbies can get the hang of the moves. She said some of the exercises are authentic martial arts, while others are incorporated for cardiovascular benefits.

“We want everybody to feel like they’re getting a good workout,” she said.

Myers said she enjoys body combat because it includes so many different movements, which makes the class go by quickly.

“It keeps your body guessing because you’re all over the place,” she said.

Myers said getting the form correct is the most challenging part of the workouts.

If you’ve never tried body combat, don’t be intimidated. Myers said you can work at your own fitness level. And chances are, you’re going to want to come back.
