I predict that Michael Phelps and his Fu Manchu will break Mark Spitz's record in Beijing.
I'm anxiously awaiting the swimming portion of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I'm a big fan of Michael Phelps, even with his goofy facial hair. (Side note: Most swimmers tend to shave every last bit of hair. I wonder what kind of drag those handlebars have.)
Let's look at the facts:
1. Individually, Phelps will compete in the 200 free, 200 and 400 IM and 100 and 200 fly. He holds the world record in all but the 100 fly.
2. As far as relays, he's in the 400 and 800 free and 400 medley. And guess what? He has the records for both freestyle relays too (as part of a team, of course).
3. He has broken 25 world records to date. Spitz broke 33.
4. Phelps and Spitz are the only swimmers to win seven golds at a major international meet.
He came close last year, but something in the air that tells me this is the year for Michael Phelps.
