USA vs Japan: End of the first half

| | Comments (0)

The United States is lucky to escape the first half with the game still tied 0-0.

Japan attacked the goal relentlessly, and if the finishing touches hadn't been just wide of the net, Japan would have an easy 2-0 lead.

The U.S. had started to settle, but wasn't putting together strong offense attacks. The team only had one corner kick in the first half compared to Japan's three. (Japan was awarded a fourth in stoppage time, but the referee whistled for the end of the half before the ball was serviced.)

Freddy Adu, a key in the U.S. offense, had a few touches, but no good looks at the goal. Robbie Rogers tried to exploit the sides of the field, but the Japanese defense held fast.

In order to be successful in the second half the United States need to find some rhythm and start working together.

Halftime stats:
Shots: USA - 4, Japan - 4
Shots on goal: USA -1, Japan - 1
Corners: USA - 1, Japan - 3

Although the game has been hard fought there have been no cards handed out.
