Some scenic views of York County by Flickr user Veender, of Lancaster County.

I especially like his restored cabin near Hallam and fields outside Jefferson.

(If you know of someone who's taking York County photos or video, let me know, because I'd love to share via the blog.)

Yikes...

So, as I was reading through the Web updates we've posted on ydr.com this week, I realized something: I know this guy!

Turns out the man robbed while delivering pizzas was a friend of mine from high school. I had been wondering how he was doing.

Chad, if you happen to read this, hope you are doing OK! Post a comment and say hi!

I didn't mean to say it

Next in an ongoing series on York County-isms

This Yorkism was totally an accident. It's one of those four-letter words I've been desperately trying to avoid. But since I said it the other day, I figure I might as well put it out there for public debate.

What could be so bad, you ask?

Quilt auction tomorrow

| | Comments (0)

Margaret E. Moul Home residents Amy, left, and Patrick sit in front of the home's showcase filled with more than 130 donated quilts and craft items that will be sold at the third annual Quilt and Craft Auction from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the 4-H Center on Stoverstown Road off Route 116. (click to enlarge photo)

The Margaret E. Moul Home is going to have its third annual quilt and craft auction from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the 4-H Center on Stoverstown Road in Bair, West Manchester Township.

Besides being able to bid on a beautiful quilt and items made by the home's residents, there's also a used book sale (a passion of mine) and a barbecue chicken dinner by the Sertoma Club of York.

Dinner tickets are $7 for half a chicken, a baked potato, applesauce and a roll. For tickets or to find out more, call 767-6463.

I'm personally excited about supporting the Moul Home and its work because of some people I know who have lived there or benefitted from the home's support. So if you'd like a good dinner and a chance to see some nice crafts Saturday, I'd suggest heading out!

Working out is hazardous!

If you're going to jump up and down on the step-aerobics step at the gym, make sure the step is securely placed on a nonskid surface.

Or else, like me, you might sprain your wrist, catching yourself as you fall.

The best part was, in true York County fashion, at least two people I knew were in the workout room with me, and the nice woman at the desk (who fetched me an ice pack) was an acquaintance I know through my part-time job.

So, bear with any typos on the blog for the next couple days - I'm sporting a nice, hefty wrist brace! And go give extra props to Michele, who has not yet ruined any appendages at the gym!

Another in the list of many events going on this unseasonably nice weekend: a sweet potato dig in Shrewsbury Township.

The yummy veggies are good for your health, said Jack Osman, one of the co-owners of the Wellness Farm, which is hosting the dig. One medium baked sweet potato supplies more than twice the recommended daily allowance for Vitamin A, more than a third of the RDA for Vitamin C and about 10 percent of the RDA for iron. Sweet potatoes are also one of the few non-fat sources of Vitamin E, he said.

Welcome to Carroll Township!

Welcome to Carroll Township, which, at the time of the census, had the lowest percentage of unemployed workers in the county, with 0.7 percent of its 2,611 residents in the labor force were jobless.

Next week, we'll head south again and visit Penn Township.

Free concert in Glen Rock

Mark Cable
Mark Cable (click to enlarge)

There's lots going on locally in the next couple of weeks, and I'll be posting several suggestions, but to start with, here's a news item we received too late to run it in the Sept. 25 edition of the Weekly Record.

Local contemporary Christian artist Mark Cable will appear in concert 8:15 a.m. Sunday at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 1 New St., Glen Rock.

Cable is scheduled to play some of his original music, and his latest CD, “Question of Identity,” will be available.

The concert is free, though they will be taking a love offering. For details, call the church at 235-1915. You can catch Cable's songs occasionally on WJTL-FM (90.3).

Let's redd up the blog

| | Comments (1)

Time to clean up on here, fix some outdated links and generally start posting more again.

And since I'm long overdue for a Yorkism, what about "redd up"?

Redd up: To fix, clean, tidy, neaten, straighten, rearrange, spruce up, etc.

A free day at the museum

Photo from the York County Heritage Trust

It wasn't until about two years ago that I learned that the nicely kept building in the "island" where Route 74 meets West Market Street was the York County Fire Museum.

I might take some time this weekend to check it out, because I just got a news release from the York County Heritage Trust (which operates the museum) saying that, in honor of the Pennsylvania State Fire Convention being held this week in York, the museum will be open an extra day and will offer free admission.

If you go: The museum, at 757 W. Market St. (the corner of Carlisle Avenue) will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Though admission is free, donations will be accepted.

For details, call the Heritage Trust's education department at 846-6452. And let me know what you think, if you go!

Welcome to Fairview Township, home to the Capital City Airport.

Next week, we'll visit Carroll Township, a little further to the west in northern York County.

Fun at festivals

| | Comments (0)

So if you're feeling some post-Fair letdown, maybe it's time to check out some other local fall festivals.

Lori Badders' "Neighborhood Notebook" this week features several, including one Saturday in New Freedom, another Saturday in Shrewsbury, and a couple of events Sept. 29, one in Windsor and another in Stewartstown.

Next in a series of profiles originally published by the Daily Record in 2002, from Census 2000 information.

Welcome to West Manheim Township. At the time of the 2000 Census, the county had the second-to-lowest percentages of both people who were divorced (4.1 percent of 3,894 adults) and families who were in poverty (0.8 percent of 1,442 families).

Up next we'll head to the very northern edge of the county, with Fairview Township!

York County friends

A great friend skims the newspaper ads for you when he knows you're looking for a new lawnmower.

A great York County friend drives by a yard sale on his way home from work, sees one for sale, test-drives it, tries to negotiate the price down, calls you, gives you directions, asks the lady selling it if you can stop by later after her sale is closed, and, after you've stopped by to see for yourself and pay for it, comes back in his Dodge pickup to load it up and deliver it to your house across town!

From Mike Argento: A different kind of "Only in York County"

I don't know... maybe as a lifelong Yorker, I've gotten numb to it, but doesn't that sort of stuff happen everywhere?

Well, except for the samurai swords part. And maybe the pit bull. And... never mind.

Where everyone knows everyone

| | Comments (0)

That's one of the things I like best about York County - there's nowhere I go where I don't know someone. (On a bad hair day, that's also one of the things I like least.)

But sometimes, the county "connections" still surprise even me.

I had an eye doctor appointment today, and just as I was getting ready to tell Rose that I was heading out, she stood up to tell me she had an eye doctor appointment and would be leaving. Well, turns out we have the same doctor, and appointments at the same time! So we headed over together.

Rose's appointment finished first, and as I was coming out into the lobby, she calls out to tell me that Michele is there too! And, knowing where we all work, the receptionist asked about our features editor, Buffy, because she recently saw her photo in the paper and thinks they went to high school together.

Only in York County...

Welcome to Jackson Township!

Next in a series of profiles originally published by the Daily Record in 2002, from Census 2000 information.

Welcome to Jackson Township. At the time of the 2000 Census, 33 percent of residents 16 and older worked in manufacturing jobs, the fifth-highest such percentage in the county.

Up next will be southwestern York County's West Manheim Township!

Back-to-school fashion drama

Another Yorkism, if you read to the end of the post - stick with me!

My daughter, who is 7, started second grade last Monday. We went through the shopping and the setting out of clothes the night before, but we didn't get as far as the trying-on.

Big mistake.
