Fun at festivals

So if you're feeling some post-Fair letdown, maybe it's time to check out some other local fall festivals.

Lori Badders' "Neighborhood Notebook" this week features several, including one Saturday in New Freedom, another Saturday in Shrewsbury, and a couple of events Sept. 29, one in Windsor and another in Stewartstown.

From her column:

New Freedom will celebrate small-town life during the third annual New Freedom Fest taking place Saturday in the downtown area, near the old train station.

The event features musical entertainment, storytelling, author book signings, food, artists, crafters, vendors, children’s games and more.

Activities kick off at 9 a.m. with an old-fashioned hand-car race. Vendor booths are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Music will be heard until dusk, when the outdoor movie “Field of Dreams” begins.

Of special note is the Canning Factory mural on High Street being painted by the area’s youths. More than 200 have participated in painting this scene, and the public is encouraged to stop by and see the historic creation.

For details on the festival, call 235-3982 or 235-2885.

Before or after you visit New Freedom Fest, take some time to stop by the 28th annual Village Fair, which runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Shrewsbury Lutheran Retirement Village.

Cake walks, hay-wagon rides, books and jewelry sales and entertainment are just a few of the things to enjoy at the event co-sponsored by the Auxiliary to Lutheran Social Services, Shrewsbury Chapter, and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, South York County Chapter 31068.

The event also features food sales, including dining room service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ham-and-bean soup (also sold for carryout), sandwiches, slaw and desserts are on the menu.

If you can’t attend either of the above, you can enjoy some festival fun next weekend, when the Windsor will celebrate the arrival of autumn Sept. 29 with Fall Fest at Laucks Memorial Park on High Street.

Sponsored by the Windsor Borough activities committee, the event begins at 10 a.m. Visitors throughout the day may enjoy a craft show, amusement rides, food, karaoke and music by DJ Frank and three bands — Set Free, 11 am. to noon; Philadelphia Bema, 2:30 to 4 p.m.; and Southern Licks 6 to 9 p.m.

Arts-and-crafts vendors still have time to rent 10-by-10-foot spaces for $20. To do so, call Bev Feudale at 246-2614 in the evening.

Some folks in Stewartstown also are organizing a festival for Sept. 29 at the borough community building and fairgrounds. More to come on that in next week’s column.
