This news release was a good way to end my day Tuesday:
State Rep. Ron Miller (R-Jacobus) has been named "Legislator of the Year" by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. The award was given to him at the association's recent convention in Hershey.
"It is an honor to be chosen by the PSACF," said Miller. "I am a supporter of Pennsylvania's county fairs, as I believe they are part of our fabric and a big reason why this state is a great place to live."
Miller's support of county fairs includes his successful amendment to Senate Bill 466 to exclude from the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) temporary buildings such as those put up at local fairs. These buildings are often erected by non-profit groups that use these festivals as fundraisers, and the building code exemption saves these groups money and allows them to be more profitable.
Miller is a member of the House Fair Caucus and has worked extensively over the years with the York Fair.
The PSACF represents 116 fairs throughout the Commonwealth and promotes tourism, 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA), in addition to showcasing agriculture and promoting good family entertainment.
So. First of all, my sincere congrats to Rep. Miller, because this is the kind of work that I think can get overlooked and that does help make York County (and much of rural Pennsylvania) what it is.
And second of all, congrats to the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs, which I had certainly never heard of before this week, for coming up with a way to get its name out there.
And finally, yeah, come on, it was good for a laugh. Legislator of the year by a county fair association. That's an "Only in York County."
