It's not what you say, it's how you say it

I tell that to my 7-year-old all the time, because she believes that "I said sorry," grumbled in a very nasty voice, is an OK apology.

But it made me think of how sometimes it's not the words or phrases we commonly use here in York County, but the way we pronounce things. I'm sure there are hundreds of these... but, to test your "PA pronunciation," tell me how you'd say the following:

1. We got a new bedroom suite for Christmas.
2. He's got a lot of irons in the fire.
3. We went over to Roots in Lancaster.

This last one is a bonus, and only seems to work if you're older than about 75:
4. I got a receipt for the new recipe book I bought.

So comment and tell me how you'd say these... I'll give my defense of the "right" way in an upcoming post...

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town. And, as a local editor, I hear every day how much you love your towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!
